If you're not familiar with the rivalry between myself and Mr. Ed, AKA Jeff Horchoff on KZbin, we have had a swarm catching competition two years in a row now. Last year it was pretty close if I recall correctly but this year he walked the dog on me. He closed out swarm season with somewhere in the neighborhood of 51 swarm catches which may actually be a world record for one person. I finished out with somewhere around twenty or twenty two. The winner of our little competition gets treated to a Taco Bell feast which I will be paying up on in the near future and I'm sure there'll be a video. I thought I might take him straight from Taco Bell to Gamblers Anonymous but I need him in gambling mode for the 2019 season where I'm proposing a double or nothing bet as well as rights to his mother's magic touch. If you didn't know she rides around with him blessing his swarm traps and that's how he pulls the numbers he does. It's a lot like the blessing of the fleet but with bee hives.
Now for everyone who is baffled by the giant world record honey bee swarms you've just seen in this video, let me clarify. These are not actual swarms. They are clusters of lost bees on a commercial bee yard. There are no queens in any of these clusters and this is not the result of any accident or mishandling of the bees or hives. This is an occurrence that happens at many commercial operations around the world when tractor trailer loads of hives are brought in to requeen in the spring or to repopulate dead-outs or for equipment repair and cleaning and so on... The trucks come in loaded with approximately four hundred and fifty hives per truck which are off loaded and placed along the drive so that the workers can access them. The hives only stay there for a short time before being moved out again but during that time field bees go out foraging. Some of these forage bees return to find that their home is gone. Instead of joining established colonies they cluster in the trees with lost bees from other colonies. You can imagine how easily these clusters can build up as thousands of hives circulate through a single work site in just a few weeks. In this video you can see all the broken tree limbs from the incredibly heavy clusters of bees that collect on them.
These clusters are comprised of bees from multiple hives all joined together and getting along in perfect harmony until we shake them down. The drop from the tree limbs sets them off causing them to become defensive hence the need for protection. As you can imagine there is no way to save every single bee so some are killed during this collection however we rescue the bulk of them. With the rehoming method you see here the vast majority of these bees will get to live out full lives in a productive colony with a new Italian queen that has been added to each box prior cutting the limbs or shaking them in the boxes. The bees we miss or can't reach are unable to establish a new colony and will not live nearly as long as the ones we collect.
I know this seems like a lot of bees for a business to lose and it is to most of us but to put things in perspective this yard is part of a business that runs 15,000 individual colonies of pure Italian honey bees and has been in the crop pollination business for over twenty five years. Chances are some of your food was grown with the assistance of this company and their livestock. To give you some idea of the amount of bees and hives that that is, they produce approximately twenty five tanker trucks of honey each year. That number varies depending on several factors. I believe that only approximately a third to a half of their hives come through this particular yard so what you see here really is a drop in the bucket and has no affect on the overall health of their colonies.
Due to the length of this video I anticipate there will be a lot of comments and questions from people who neither watched the entire video nor read this description. If you are so inclined and know the answers feel free to respond to those people on my behalf. Many thanks for your views, your comments and your support of this channel.

My life is complete. Not only did I witness the world's largest swarm catch ever videoed, and hear the Dirt Rooster admit he lost in our swarm compitition, but in humility, bow to the victor. I may have won our little compitition, but you sir are bringing in the hoards of folks to keeping bees by the work you do with your videos. Keep on making the videos, and we will keep on watching. God's peace brother.

My hats off to you Mr. Ed you beat the DirtRooster down this year. And I have been trying to corner him into putting 628 DirtRooster hats on his website, I also have been trying to get you to put out Mr. Ed hats. I follow the two of you like a pitbull on a ham sandwich. Keep on catching those swarms. I just found a place to put a swam trap beside a bee tree that has been producing swarms for at least 3 years. I am hoping for the best.

I was going to ask how do all the lost bees come together like this. But when they're in the hives, they don't like strangers coming in. But then it dawned on me that it sems like bee's and people are the same in a disaster situation. If a bunch of people all lost their place to live, they'd all come together in harmony just like the bees. But separated out into individual factions, we don't like others to come on to our turf. Awesome video Randy.
@chronovore7234
@chronovore7234 5 жыл бұрын
While this is somewhat true, it's not the case for most bee swarms. Each bee hive will produce a swarm at least a couple times a year. When a new queen hatches, and the orginal queen doesnt kill her, about 30% off the bees will leave with the new queen and establish a new colony.
@julieenslow5915
@julieenslow5915 5 жыл бұрын
@@chronovore7234 I think you missed something, go read the information if you had not done so yet. This was likely foragers from about 1000 hives. Not every hive going through this yard leaves in the middle of the day while foragers are out. That said, and remembering that these are NOT swarms, they are clearly not all from one colony. So how do you compare this to a natural swarm? These bees were happy to be with other bees, they were clinging to each other. They had nothing to defend, no queen, no brood, no stores, no colony. So they were just clustered and waiting to die. They probably would go out and get some food to eat and come back to cluster and wait. Other than that, they had no future. This commercial beekeeper was happy to see them rescued by friends, and so he was there helping them. This is known as a win all around. thewoodshed had a good point. These bees were very much in the same situation as human survivors from a disaster, who in an emergency, will band together and help each other without regard for where the other survivors came from.

According to Jürgen Tautz in his book The Buzz About Bees, foragers enter a pronounced state of sleep-largely at night and in the hive. However, sometimes they sleep outside the hive as well. In addition, beekeepers and bee photographers the world over have reported seeing bees asleep in flowers. from honeybeesuite.com

@@kme So funny that she asked that. So for the first time this year when I was watering my yard (just a regular garden) I look over to this flower and was like what is that bee doing? He wasn't on the center of the flower, he was on one of the petals so I sat watching him and he didn't move. Curious, I continued observing, and watering. I came back a few minutes later and it hadn't moved. I decided to gently pet his back to see if he was responsive and it was the funniest thing, he lkfted his head and started wiggling his antlers like he had just woked up! Which turns out, I guess he did. Lol. Pretty cool to see as I really had no idea that bees really slept like that. I saw it once more on a bush this year. Also had one specifically wait for me to fill the bird bath and then go to the edge when I was done and get a drink. Hunny bees are the coolest! :)

I recently found your channel, it is quite addicting go watch. Which I fine fascinating given I'm highly allergic to bee stings, benadryl and the epi rescue pin. For 10 years we hired local beekeepers when we had our blueberry farm. We had 35+ triple stacked boxes brought in. Took me 6 years to get brave enough to get within 5 feet of a box. Love to watch em and photogragh em in my gardens but still freak oit if they land on me. Got caught out in my yard once when a swarm moved in between my barn where was and the backdoor of my that was terrifying. Like you, the keeper who collected the swarm said they would hurt me while they are swarming if I don't swat at them. He loaded the swarm box in the back of his station wagon and drove off. One part of me would love to see something your record swarm trees in person. The other would have a stroke in the presence of that many bees. Lol. Thoroughly enjoy your videos.

It's not honeybees that you have to worry about. They're the good guys... uh... girls. Mind you, if you were to go headlong into troublemaker mode, the honeybees would defend themselves. Even bumblebees are relatively easy-going unless they perceive you as a direct danger to their hive. All bees are simply trying to do their work of gathering pollens, and nectars as their food source, and raising their young to keep the population up. They have to exist in the same space as we do. Since honeybees only get one shot at stinging (due to the barbed stinger), they only sting as a last resort, because, well, it's the last thing they'll do. They die when the stinger stays in the target and pulls their abdomen apart when the bee tries to leave. Hornets and wasps, on the other hand, are more easily agitated, especially the bald-faced hornet variety. You don't mess with those guys. But bees aren't interested in bothering people, they have busy schedules.
