The rear window is called a "Breezeway" window and the center section goes all the way down and is controlled by a switch on the dash. It was a feature of the '63, '64, and '65s. In 1966, for safety concerns the rear window could only be lowered about half-way. My dad bought a '65 Montclair and I took my driver license test with it. 4200 pounds being pushed by a 390 v8 with power-assisted steering. It was a great "Drive-In Movie Theatre" car!

Absolutely LOVED this video! My step Dad retired from the US Air Force - Dover AFB,, Dover, Delaware in June 1965. My folks bought a brand new Merc Montclair EXACTLY like this one and when he retired my folks and we four kids, my 16 year old brother, 14 year old sister and 7 year old sister made the journey from Dover to Portland, Oregon in that car pulling a 14 foot Nomad travel trailer. Yes,, it was kinda cramped with 5 full size adults and the little sis. We did not stay in any motel or hotel,, made the trip straight thru because my step Dad had to make it to his new job with the Portland FD. @2:50 you mentioned that power rear window,, it honestly did help have a good air flow thru the car which helped keep us a tad bit cooler BECAUSE our's did not have AC. Wet washcloths around our necks with that air flow helped keep the sweating to a minimum since we were packed in the interior kinda tightly. It was fun to see you try to bring this old Merc back from the dead and for me to remember that trip with my Mom, StepDad, brother and sisters who are all waiting for me to see them again in Heaven,, Thank you 🙂

My parents had this very same car back in 1966. I remember going to the drive in theater and Dad would put that back window down and my brother, sister and I would sit on the deck lid, rest our arms on the roof and use the roof for a table to set our drinks and stacks on. Haven't thought of that for years.

Glad you found this car. My father and i similarly saved a '63 Mercury Monterey. In '63 the Monterey was the top trim level, but in '64 and later Montclair was the top. She was in damn good shape for her age. 390 2bbl which had never been rebuilt, (and still hasn't had a full rebuild because it just keeps going), AC, Ps, Pb, Cruise O matic. Nice car. Almost 4 years later and 4,500 miles down the road, we're finally getting into restoring her cosmetically in addition to our original mechanical restoration. These Merc's just cruise down the road, smooth and comfortable.

My Grandpa worked for Mercury division of Ford, I can remember him having a few that had the " Breezeway " back window when I was a little kid as he got a new one every year!, The piece that's off the Drag Link is the Power Steering control valve, It's actually broke and needs replaced, Probably big $$$$ if you can find one!, This type of PS is quite troublesome with Valve, Ram and line problems as it all always moving!, 64 was the last year they used that setup. Great Video Travis! Jeff

Nice car. Many years ago I was paid with a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura convertible for changing a transmission in a 1967 Mercury Montego. Both cars were awesome but my Ford was super cool. It had a 170CI straight 6, black interior with ivory accents. If I had kept it, the price today is like $30,000.00. Back then I could buy just about any car for approx. $50.00. My best car was 1970 Buick Gran Sport I bought for $50.00 with a bad engine. I put a 430CI engine and 400 turbo trans with overdrive from a 1967 Wildcat. That car was unbeatable and super fun to drive. I bought the Wildcat for $50.00 and to change engine & transmission cost just $5.00 for an oil pan change (gasket), & change the tailstock. Everything else bolted right up.

Having a car in a dry environment sure helps preserve it. A car like that in the east would be a a dissolved mound of rust by now. The way the car runs and how body panels fit together shows how workers cared avout their jobs and had pride! Computers build things faster and as we perceive better, but a computer has no pride. Lets see a 2023 Ford is 60 years and see what shape its in!

My Dad had one of those, also with the 'Breezeway' back window, It was black with the same 390. He drove it a couple years after buying it used, then passed it down to my older brother as his first car, but it had engine issues. I remember my older brother and I spent the summer rebuilding the engine (a first for both of us) with new rings, lifters, valves lapped etc. and although we followed the Ford manual on every aspect of the rebuild and specs, it ran the first day after a couple months then hydro-locked the next day upon start up. We likely didn't get the head gasket torqued right. Shame, it was a really cool car!

In Canada, this particular model was called "Meteor". My father had bought one back in the day, it was a black car with blue interior. Obviously, black was not the original color. That summer, he thought me pretty much all he knew on automotive mechanic, the engine was a 351 windsor, the frame and the body were solid for the year and mileage. It took a couple months to get the engine purring after a complete rebuild and that was the car we used to bring my brother to the church where he got married. Good times, good times!!!
