There is a model kit of the Bates house, in 1/87 scale that fits beautifully with train sets. I've seen a few renditions of it tucked away in large dioramas, and it always brings back memories of Psycho. So truly iconic!

The 'Psycho' house was also utilized as a backdrop on the color 45 rpm picture sleeve for the 1968 hit, ' Lady Willpower' by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

I worked on the lot in the nineties and the house became my favorite place to hang around at lunch. I always took visitors there- I'd park (often a studio golf cart, but sometimes my own car) out of sight- behind Norman's office down at the motel, and if the tour came by I'd make sure we ducked out of sight to avoid spoiling the presentation. The entrance hall of the house is built up a little, with several decaying layers of ancient wallpaper, and then down a few stairs towards the back there's a creepy dirt floor. And of course, upstairs is Mother, plugged in to the wall, with a maintenance schedule tacked up next to her. The motel is mainly an exterior, but the cabins do have showers! I have some great old pictures somewhere in a box.

Rick did you know that albeit Anthony Perkins was billed first his character doesn't show up until nearly 30 minutes into the movie? While Vera Miles who was second billed doesn't appear until an hour in to the movie. Also Rick did you know that Anthony Perkins was raised by his mother alone since he was five years old which mirrors the relationship between Norman Bates and his mother. Although Psycho was filmed long after color films had become the industry standard for higher end films, Alfred Hitchcock decided make Psycho black and white for a few reasons. Firstly, he thought the movie would be too gory in color. And secondly, after seeing how many inexpensive B movies managed to do very well at the box office, he wanted to elevate the genre a bit and see how well it could perform with a little extra effort. Aside from being less expensive the black and white was convenient because Hitchcock actually used Bosco chocolate in place of blood, which would have looked absurd in color but looked great in black and white LOL!🏚🎥🎬🔍

@@sallyn2393 Have you seen any of the Psycho sequels? Most notably the second film Psycho II released in 1982. The film has Anthony Perkins reprising his role as Norman Bates 20 I mean 22 years later. The film also stars a young Meg Tilly who actually looked like Joyce DeWitt from Three's Company with the same hairdo LOL! She was also nearly cast as Costanza in Amadeus but due to a knee injury the day before filming was to begin she had to be replaced by Elizabeth Berridge. And Diane Franklin also auditioned for the role but producers said she was too pretty?🏚🏪🎥🎬

@SuperMarioBrosIII 22 күн бұрын
@@sallyn2393 Also in Psycho II it wasn't Norman who did any of the kills... well except in the end. Psycho 3 was darker I feel and the 4th which was made for cable was to me the weakest in the franchise. Mostly flashbacks of Norman in his youth with his mother. The movie would foreshadow the A&E tv series Bates Motel 23 years later which ran for 5 seasons. Psycho II also has a great soundtrack score. 🏚🎥🎬💽

"Psycho" was groundbreaking indeed! Hitchcock crossed the line from suspense into horror. He did it with such mastery and skill. Plus, the Bernard Hermann strings are inimitable. Probably not my favorite Hitchcock film, but definitely in my Top 5. Thanks Rick. Be hopeful.

That is very interesting, Rick. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of suspense, Crime, and Murder. That house has always been creepy to me. Psycho is great. There was an episode of "Knight Rider." Halloween episode that showed the front of that house. Michael Knight and Bonnie goes exploring. Even David Hasselhoff said, "Boy. This seems very familiar." When approaching the House. The house itself from pics makes you feel like someone is watching you from the window. The episode on Knight Rider is, "Halloween Knight." Bonnie witnesses a murder from her apartment window. And her and Michael try to prove it. But Psycho is one of Hitchcock's best movies. It has endured the test of time. Glad to know more about the location of the house. Thanks, Rick. Take care.

I remember watching Psycho. Lots of years later me and my husband were staying at a motel for a little while. This one night a bunch of police had the whole motel surrounded. We were wondering what the heck was going on. They searched in every room. They said they were looking for someone. After a few minutes they found who they were looking for. One police asked what his name is. He said his name is Norman Bates. I freaked out. My husband was wondering what was wrong with me. So I told him that guy said his name is Norman Bates. And we are in the same motel as he was.

The video left me wanting more! Great work! It would be cool if they still kept the back open to see the facade even with Mother in the window and the scare actor, but still cool just the same. Definitely show us what else you discovered at Universal, I’m sure a lot has changed since the last video visit you shared with us. 😁 Hopefully one day they finally build Fred Mertz the Dark Ride or at very least Fred Mertz an animatronic tribute! 😂

You can see the house in old tv shows such as the 70's version of the Hardy Boys where they don't acknowledge it as such, just a spooky old house. Jessica gets to go into it in Murder She Wrote. House used to be up a hill which was more dramatic looking. Oh well. Love the idea of "Norman" coming out of it with knife!

I'm pretty certain people here already know this, but there is a book called "Alfred Hitchcock and the making of 'Psycho'" by Stephen Rebello, which is for me the ultimate "how to do it" book for filmmakers. When Hitchcock made "Psycho" he only intended to make a high quality low budget film. Everybody associated with the film knew halfway through filming that they had a good movie. But that's it. They only thought it was good. They had no idea that this movie was going to make history. You wouldn't believe their reactions when it got back to them that people were actually screaming and fainting during the movie. Hitchcock especially. They were ALL taken by surprise. The only reaction they were going for with the shower scene was people going "WHAT? Janet Leigh is out of the movie already? We're not even half way through it yet." So that is why I recommend that book to wanna-be filmmakers. You just don't know what you got when you are filming it.
