This lock actually seems like a good buy.It's cheap for it's size. Basically unpickable (bosnianbill had to give up), and fixing the pin seems like a quite easy fix. I guess if you don't have a weld machine you can stuff that pin full of something that hardens, so anyone would be unable to screw a bolt in.

While roll pins are hard a good quality tap will thread the inside diameter. Then use a long screw, a bushing that the roll pin will fit thru, and a washer and nut, to jack the pin out. I do it at work all the time. Makes less noise too.

Would be nice to also offer up ideas on how these flaws could be fixed or made better. For example if someone has this type of lock, how could they make it more difficult to exploit the weakness that was used to open it in the video? Maybe filling up the pin's hole with something? Or maybe welding over it? Discussing these things could lift this channel to yet another high IMO.
@MikeBaxterABC6 жыл бұрын
The thing about this by-pass is it could also be done surreptitiously, as the lock could easily be reassembled with little obvious evidence to its removal ... not perhaps applicable for a bicycle theft :) ... But if that chain-lock were securing a fenced in compound or equipment storage area ... the by-pass might mis-direct blame to a key holder. I think a hardened solid or threaded blind pin would be much better and a simple 2 second tack weld, would eliminate this vulnerability
@arealhuman8266 жыл бұрын
Who said anything about theft
@TheUntamedNetwork5 жыл бұрын
This by-pass is not surreptitous, any analysis of the pin area would show substantial trauma. It is however potentially very covert, especially if you wern't aware of this weakness, or had potential reason to believe the thing that this was protecting wasn't there in the first place.
@robertleifeld2256 жыл бұрын
Make a kind of pin puller. 1. Get some washers a little larger than the roll pin, 2. Get a nut that fits your machine screw 3 Put the nut all the way up the screw, 4. add the washers, 5. insert the screw into the roll pin 6 tighten the nut down to extract the roll pin.

After putting in the (supposedly hardened) roll pin, I'd insert a slightly shorter pin made of high tensile steel down to the bottom, leaving enough space at the top to insert a hardened steel ball (ball bearing).
@PhotoBobBarker6 жыл бұрын
was the lock side of the chain assembly (the part with the hole for the roll pin) hardened? If it isn't (or even if it is if you have carbide drill bits) first pick a drill bit small enough to fit through the roll pin and drill through using the pin as a drill guide. next pick a bit thats slightly bigger than the OD of the roll pin and drill from the other side. should be able to use a automatic center punch to drive the pin out. with the cost of carbide drill bits down as low as they are, it really makes any lock assembled with a roll pin not too bad to deal with. and a lot less noisy than either a slide hammer or die/disc grinder. Just noticed that D.R. M. suggested the same two days ago...

I would have loved to see the nut splitter as it is a relatively quiet tool where the only sound would be created by the lock bumping against stuff (for example when it finally gets opened and the force shoots the lock away)

Locks keep the honest, honest. Thanks for the brute demo!
@the_undead3 жыл бұрын
The original version of that phrase was something like honest locks keep honest people honest. If you don't have good locks then basically anyone can steal whatever it is you're securing and be stealthy about it, this is why you need to know what kind of locks you're getting and what design flaws if any they have because sure with an angle grinder you can get through any lock in existence but unless the lock is in the middle of nowhere then using an angle grinder is going to be very much not stealthy, and if you have a good lock it might take you 5 plus minutes to get through it with an angle grinder

@ejonesss5 жыл бұрын
frankly that is a very good lock but could be improved. first they could make the part on the lock thicker and make pin hole all the way through and use short pin (make the pin length 2/3 or 3/4 the depth of the lug) then fill both ends with some filler so a screw cant be placed in the holes. you see that the pin holes and screw holes in some locks are plugged. otherwise the lock is a very good security.
@harmlymostless69256 жыл бұрын
My first thought about defeating your slide hammer would be to place a weld over the hole. bevel the hole and fill it with a nice round blob of weld. Of course, all that would have done would be to move to your next kind of attack.

@thomasneal92915 жыл бұрын
a bit late... but if you use a large screw with fine thread, you are expanding the pin, making it even harder to remove from the shackle. I would go back to the idea of using a smaller screw with heavier threads that will hopefully bite into the steel a bit more than actually spreading it.
