Because after a while it becomes redundant. Eventually, if a lock becomes impossible or nearly impossible to pick, then the lock itself (or the door/window it's attached to) becomes the weakest link instead. No point in installing an impenetrable lock on a door that can just be kicked in.

Another great video LPL! 1. How would you compare this disc detainer lock to Abus X plus one? 2. Do you think other similar locks would benefit from having core deeper in the lock? 3. Why don't you try to have the locks x-rayed when you can not examine them in non destructive way?
@huxleypig696 жыл бұрын
This lock is nowhere near as good as Abus X-Plus. I go into detail about how to pick X-Plus in my OzSecCon talk (as well as Protec). Putting the core deeper into the lock is a pretty poor defence, it is very easily gotten around! So while it might help a bit, it won't stop anyone with determination.

By the way, curiosity led me to click on BlackDolphin90's account, and it appears that he's a nice, polite, warm, generous, wise, moral, and good-hearted young man, who's GIVEN hundreds of hours of his time to the world. He has veritable ADMIRERS and brings genuine joy to MANY peoples' lives. Damn!... He and his parents are RARE bright stars that help sustain whatever trickle of hope may be left for humanity. It'd be nice of this could be taken apart. You could file in some false gates and get something on par with an Abloy classic. Not sure why Knog didn't do that. It'd cost pennies and make it more secure (although it's excellent already).

In a disc detainer lock shouldn't it be possible to design the internal spacers so that they would interfere with the use of a picking tool? Why is there room to move the tool from disc to disc? In other words if the spacers forced the tool to be at angle 0 degrees then how could the tool successfully position a disc at 45 degrees and then escape to the next disc?
@Pyrolock6 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought -- I'll have to ponder that one -- seems obvious -- Perhaps I should pull the disc stack apart from an Abloy Protec II and see if they have already used "slotted, non rotating" spacer (I hate pulling the disc stacks apart as it's such a mess to get it all back together properly!)
@Pyrolock6 жыл бұрын
I thought about a bit more and realized the problem would be with the KEY, i.e., the key has to rotate and it would be trapped by the fixed spacers, or the key spaces between bittings would make the key way to fragile to be practical.\ with a tiny round shaft between each cut
@huxleypig696 жыл бұрын
You'd need cutouts on the key to match. It'd be warded essentially. Abloy used to put fixed discs in their Classic which acted in the same way ultimately. The key had to have a 5 cut and the disc never moved. It stops some picks from working. There is a Russian Classic knock-off that uses a series of them, like a type of rotational key profiling. Abus do a 'pick trap' washer in their X-Plus which is designed in pretty much the way you describe. They key has a cutout on it and the disc behind the trap-washer is always a 0 (it is the deepest disc in the lock); so you have to turn it around to 0 in order to pick the lock but then at that point your pick can't get back between the discs, not without resetting the 0 disc you just set at least. You can get around it though.
@davejoseph56156 жыл бұрын
It does seem that round slots/sections would be necessary in the key, so I admit the key would probably need to be made of steel.

@beardyface84925 жыл бұрын
All that proves is that if thieves want your bike they'll remove any lock, probably destructively.. I recommend welding your bike frame to the rack, or sawing through it.. make your bike worthless to them (sadly to you also) and they won't steal it Alternatively replace your bike with a really rough looking used one, and even a masterlock padlock & 6mm unhardened chain will suffice. All locks do is stop casual theft.. not "professional" thieves.
