6F35 Transmission Repair Cost with Options: HOW TO ESCAPE

I have a 2015 Escape with 135k miles on it. Recently, I experienced a steering wheel assembly malfunction. Initially, I tried finding local repair options, but unfortunately, they couldn't handle the issue. Eventually, I had to take it to the dealership, and it cost me $4500 to get it fixed. At one point, I even considered selling the car, but it holds sentimental value as my first car, and I can't imagine someone else driving it. 😂 Your videos have been a great help in teaching me how to do repairs and things I never thought I could do on my own. So, thank you for inspiring me to keep my car. I think keeping your car can still help others, like me, on small problems and repairs. Salute to you, Sir!

Same story with our 2014 Escape Titanium FWD. About the same mileage, had to have a complete transmission rebuild. Cost us $4,000 (local shop in NW Georgia). Fortunately, we had that available, along with the down payment on a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, about a week before the news of the recall on the trailer hitch on those vehicles came out. The guy at the transmission shop said he has had many of these transmissions come in for rebuilds lately . He said to hold on to your receipts because to him it is a very similar situation to the transmission issues on the Ford Festiva from a few years ago. Ford wound up paying out a huge class-action settlement for those, and he wouldn't be surprised if it happened with these as well.

Hey there Chris- thanks so much for sharing your experience as well- that's good to know- not bad coming in at $4K to fix it all in- the transmission shop near me said the same thing about them always coming in. Great advice to hold onto the receipts- I hadn't thought of that, so thanks for that advice! . It's unreal how many of our Escapes are affected. Hopefully there's some resolution at some point. How has the rebuilt transmission been since then? Have you been happy with the work that was done? Thanks again for sharing

Thanks very much, Michael- as, always, great to hear from you from across the pond, sir! Yeah, it's a dramatic increase in space from our Escape, but we do want to hang onto it for a while longer- if we find it gets in the way or funds need to go to something else, we may have a tougher decision down the road, but I'm going to try and keep making some content while we still can :) If plans change for family reasons, it will still be a good reason to do so, so it's a better of 2 good options in my mind

I just replaced the torque converter on my 2014 ford escape titanium because it was doing the same thing I was almost 100% sure it was the torque converter, FAILED still doing the same thing with the new torque converter 😢.

2011 ford fusion 3.0l with 6f35 tran and 135k miles on it , having shuddering issues as i hit 30 mph as im slowing down only took it to a local shop and said the same thing that if the torque converter is going bad it could damage the tran and it would be better just to do a tran rebuild with new converter for about 5k, not sure of what to do wanting to know your imput thanks

i have one, same issues, im going to pull it, get the rebuild kit , reset the solenoids and drive away. (i do have a lift, and you only need it to comfortably disconnect everything attached i will try the trans flush 3x with the additive just for s & g's there are alot of good rebuild videos on this transmission. you just have to be operating room clean and use alot of lube when reassembling it. ill get back to you with parts cost and time it took me glwp!

Hello, I have a problem, oil is leaking from the 6f35 gearbox, I replaced the seal on the gearbox and oil is still leaking, what could be the cause?

Dude this was extremely helpful because... the exact same thing happened to my 2013 Escape, with (165,000 miles), yesterday and I got the same exact prices from dealers and mom and pop shop. I actually don't know what to do because as you said, the car is worth more but it's not worth the price of a new transmission. I'm screwed. Something similar happened to my Toyota truck and I got nothing for it either. I guess I just need to quit holding on to vehicles for 10+ years. The sad thing is all the required maintenance was up to date:( Thanks for the video. P.S. the code on my check engine light says it is a bad Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid. Dealership said it was Torque convertor.

What about a remanufactured transmission for ~2700 and then have someone install it? Any consideration for this method or pros and cons?

for a remanufactured transmission, that is taking a gamble. unless it was done from the manufacturer. but do not forget that just to drop the transmission , it cost about as much as that reman. . . . 2375 i think. . . . . . .that is still 10 K [ because of taxes ] .

man..... mines making a solid clunking noise only when shifting in reverse. the problem is, in the the last 6 months ive changed essentially the entire front end suspension and motor mount, including both axles. i thought it was the motor mounts, but watching and listening to it, it really sounds like its in the transmission. im going to do a fluid swap. i have never changed the transmission fluid in the vehicle, so i am probably extremely lucky to get to 157k on my 2.5L 2013 S model. just sucks if these things handgrenade around this mark.

I have a 2012 ford escape 2.5l FWD automatic, and I have sort of a rough shift going from 1st to 2nd gear only, the other gears go in very smooth, already changed fluid twice. Has 75k miles. What can this issue be? It only rough shift when slowly accelerating, like city driving. when I press the gas a bit more like moving on a highway after a bump it shifts fine. Please help me. Other than that everything works fine and smooth, I only put it mercon lv motorcraft, also I already change bushing on cv axle driver side.

@@INTEL965GAMES it seems to come and go, I change the fluid 2x now, maybe needs to change once more. To get all old out. But prolly needs to reset the shift tables using forscan.

I have a 2014 Ford Escape with 155k miles and when I drive 65 miles or more for 15 minutes it triggers a "Transmission Failure: Service Now" alarm and the car starts to stall while I'm driving. We are only using it within the city, if we have to take the Highway there is no way, as it will stop all the time.

So had what you are discribing happen to my today on my 18' escape with 75k on it. Did you ever figure out exactly what it was? Seemed like an oil pump failing to me.

I have a 2016 ford escape se that has about 165,000 miles on it. I guess that's when the trans is set to explode? Anyway, when its cold, it seems to work. As it gets warmer, 1st gear doesn't want to click in right away. Moreover, there seems to be a mechanism that puts the throttle in idle. Any trans folks have any ideas?

Oh man, so the 165kmi is just when ours went out as well haha. Unfortunately there have been others who have had it go sooner and later, but it's just this design of transmission that really stinks :/ 6F35 6 speed transmission if you'd like to look up some info about it.... My suggestion would be to try a drain and fill to get some newer fluid inside and then check the fluid level with the leveling port on the driver's wheel well. If it's still doing that after the fluid change and up to temp, it could be something more serious. In terms of the mechanism mentioned and it being in idle, are you saying that you'll be in Drive and it will go into Neutral? If so, it could be your shift cable bushing failing and your drive selector lever on the top of the transmission could be out of sync with your shift lever in the cabin. Please respond when convenient- very interested to know a bit more. Thanks!

Hi there Sandy- sure thing. So just like a typical engine oil change every 3-5k miles, your transmission uses a different type of oil that also needs changing. This is the Ford specified Mercon LV Automatic Transmission fluid. The oil is a rich transparent red color when it's brand new, just like your engine oil is typically a deep gold color when new. As the fluid ages, it becomes a burned brown, and can even have worn bits of transmission components are worn down by everyday use. There are magnets and filters to collect these metal particulates and prevent them from being pumped back into circulation with the transmission fluid, and that's all good. It's good practice to drain the transmission fluid and replace it with the amount that came out every 30,000 miles. Dealers will sometimes suggest a "Transmission Fluid Flush" which is OK, but it always risks stirring up the metal bits which have settled and been retained by the magnets and filters- if loose again, these bits can harm the rest of the transmission and makes the "flush" somewhat risky and unnecessary. Therefore, a drain and fill is the easiest on the system by just pulling the plug (bolt) out of the bottom of the transmission housing, draining however much fluid will come out, and then adding more to the fill port in the engine bay. If you're not sure if the correct amount was present before, there is also a leveling plug on the side in the driver's wheel well where you can also remove a plug that will drain any excess fluid once the transmission is up to operating temperature and viscosity. Hmmmmm.... Even more terror stricken now, about time to ditch my 14 Titanium. 130K, and newer Santa Fe's are piquing my interest. Radio has died, the rear drivers side radar BLIS is dead, got an ABS sensor on the lam. As much as I have liked this SUV, I'm quickly running out of love with it.

Our 2nd car is a 2020 Santa Fe. It's a well very equipped vehicle. All the features work great and it drives well,, but honestly look at Hyundai and their engine issues. If you want to go 130k+ miles reliably go for a Japanese brand.

I was just given a 2014 se because the car is making the exact same sound and doing the same thing where it stops, it sounds like it's just the torque converter. Mine did get 3 codes related to the transmission, trying to figure out how to fix it myself and then I have a working car. Keep in mind this shitty Ford only has 65k miles. It also has a cracked block and the known coolant problem due to the cracked block.

Sorry for the delay here- man, only 65k miles? that is rough. Just out of warranty too. Powertrain warranty is 60k miles... ugh. I'd be so frustrated. What codes did you get for the trans? If the block is cracked and has the coolant issue too, it may be a better bet to just pull a whole engine/trans out of another vehicle that was totaled if you can find one. Are you pretty confident in the work done to DIY it?

@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews yep, 65k miles and the torque converter and or transmission pump is dead. The coolant stuff started at probably 60k. Maybe it had a 60k powertrain warranty, but I'm sure after 10 years that's long gone. When the car was towed to me, it had codes P0219 P0733 and P0734 over speed condition of engine, gear ratio 3 incorrect, and gear ratio 4 incorrect. Realistically I either fix the car to sell it, or I part it out. If I can get a transmission for $450, then I can deal with pulling the engine. I don't think it's worth whatever extra cost to replace the engine if I'm just going to sell it to carvana or whatever. Ive never pulled an engine, but with the full video I found I'm sure I could do it. These Ford's are just absolute junk.

You should try resetting the trans codes. That can sometimes bring the operation back to normal. Sounds strange but I experienced pretty much exactly the same as you described. The Ford manual tells the technician to reset the codes and see if the problem persists before doing any other work. Mine has worked well for 6 months since resetting the trans codes. I used the OBD Link MX+ Good Luck!

@@YZF648 resetting codes isn't going to make a noise caused by the torque converter and or transmission pump go away. I wiped the over speed codes and all of the stuff that the car threw when the problem first started, but it still does the same thing. It seems to start making the noise once it gets a little warm, which seems to be very quickly at like 70F, and then goes on and off of making noise, and when it's not making noise, it won't move, probably because if it's the transmission pump, then every time the pump temporarily stops, you can't shift and the torque converter I guess also stops working due to no fluid pressure.
