Toyota 20R Engine Removal - 1980 Long Bed Pickup

Today I remove the 20R engine from the 1980 Toyota Long Bed parts truck. The stuck crank pulley bolt did everything it could to slow me down, but I eventually got it to break free! Next time I'll tear into this 20R engine and see what years of exposure to the elements without a carburator or oil filter does to the inside of an engine.

Hmm, everything you do is pretty interesting, so I'd watch your tear down video of the 20R, however, I reckon keep that for later and continue with building the long bed. I imagine these things must be worth something for all the trouble you have gone to.

I agree well done. Also good point about breaking while attached to trans, mounts, etc. I guess a lot of guys know that, but I might not have thought about it and been sol on the engine stand

For stubborn bolts like the crank bolt, I recommend The new gen 3 Milwaukee 1/2 inch high torque impact. I'm a heavy diesel mechanic that works on anything from large semi style trucks, to large heavy equipment such as the Cat 826A as an example, where bolts can be sized 2 inches or larger, and torqued to 600FT pound or more. That Gen 3 Milwaukee isn't cheap, but it hasn't ever failed to remove any bolt its come across so far.

My 20r block and crank were junk but, like you, I kept the head and valve cover and cam. I doubt I build a hybrid.

The breaker bar: bendy bendy I'm not sure if it would hurt something, but wouldn't a bit of intimidation with heat (blow torch or something, not sure what you call it), and penetrating fluid have helped? Engine teardown would be interesting.

This truck had AC, but I believe it was aftermarket. Parts of it were already missing when I got the truck.
