The truck was used by a locksmith Company in Altus OK , then sold to the father of the guy i got it from, when his dad passed away the truck sat in the driveway for the next 17 or so years when i found it in 2020, I got this truck for free because i bought his dads Toyota 1986 2wd Xtra cab long bed , IM super stoked that I get to watch Brian do his thing on this baby! My trucks and cars have been. 1967 Carrona 4dr, two 1985 Tercels, two 1985 4x4 single cabs, one 1992 4x4 single cab, one 1994 4 runner, one 1986 2wd xtra cab long bed, and my last one is a 2003-Tundra step side. and of course, the 1980 that i gifted to 6th Gear Garage

Blows my mind what you guys in areas with rust go through....I bought my Toy shortbox SR-5 4x4 new 40 years ago and there isn't an inch of rust on the whole thing! Kalifornia sucks...except for rust!

I got a 20r that was sitting out in a field for 15-20 years. Looks save able. Restoring every piece of it I can cheaply since it's all I've got for my 74 Celica. Including the Spark Plugs and wires. Can't wait to test fire the engine once I put it back together. Have not done much with carburetors but it's awesome to have a back up engine for a rig that originally had one even if I go more modern and higher HP. I have messed with a 75' sbc 350 that has a Carter comp. carb on it. That's what I picked the engine up in actually.

After doing many 22R motors....Always helicoil the timing chain cover for that hidden head bolt to timing chain cover(they strip easy and lets you tighten it a bit more)....Use Toyota black sealant on timing chain cover, rear seal retainer to block, and head gasket at timing chain cover...the toyota sealant is easy to take apart over most RTVs....Its the only way to stop oil leaks.....That engine didnt look bad for what it went through being exposed to weather....The broken steel timing guide scares me...never seen that, seen many plastic guide troubles though...

This reminds me of my single attempt to rebuild a 22R from an 86 4WD pickup that threw a rod bearing after I messed up a timing chain replacement (got something in the oil pan and didn't spend the time to find it :() Great fun watching, can't wait to see what else you have here on the channel!!!

Yeah I had a mitsubishi 4g54 engine with a broken timing guide like this lots of metal shavings in the oil from the bolts being rubbed off got the truck free from another guy who knew I needed a truck

To add another tidbit, the guy that drove that 80 was kind of lets say always drunk lol, he drove the truck slowly around town but would run into some railroad tracks that were used at his liquor store as some sort of parking stop. Hence both trucks the 86 and Brians 80 had those huge can opener slices on both trucks both sides of bed lol

I replaced the timing chain and guides on my 87 with roughly 180k on it with metal backed guides and heavy duty chain. A year later the guide broke and jammed between the lower sprocket and cover. Luckily it only took out 2 valves. I went back to the plastic guides. I have a hard time trusting the metal guides. The only mechanical failure in 250k

Sure you know that 20R, per 85 and post 85 blocks are getting rare....You may want to talk with LC Engineering about buying what ya got....

Love your videos keep up the good work. Also quick question I’m having a struggle with my 20R and for some reason it’s not starting anymore I have recently rebuilt my engine with brand new parts and still no luck. I had made sure that my distributor was working at the correct timing and still unable to fire up. I was thinking it might be the carburetor which I replaced also with the right adjustment and still no life at all. my main concern is, could the timing chain be misaligned. Or if so, what type of procedure did you Align it, to? Thank you. Any information or resource will be very helpful.

Do you own the factory service manual for your truck? It should tell you all the details of setting the timing properly. So if you have spark, and if you can smell fuel, then check your ignition timing and mechanical timing. You just rebuilt it so I assume compression is good.

@@6thGearGarage hey thanks for responding back. Yes I did exactly what the Toyota Haynes book wants it performed and still no start up. I did, however, make sure the compression rating was correct and so far it’s mostly it’s higher than 120. I started to begin noticing that when the engine is being turned over by the starter, it feels like the valves are hitting the cylinder, even though they’re in the correct timing. Just hesitating to turn over. What I probably might do is completely removed the engine and start from scratch, making sure that everything is corrected
