I don't think I've never wanted a tool more than that laser!

Sweet video and channel, I have a similar truck (81 4x4) that I am wanting to restore. Thinking a laser machine is a must for me as well…

That machine has saved me so much time!

The laser still blows my mind. Still to Sci-fi for my brain to comprehend. 5:08 wow, you can really see all the rot in the metal

I should have the full video about the laser done in a few weeks. I did a lot of research before picking this one and will be happy to share everything I've learned.

Nice work. You should invest in a plasma cutter, it will make cutting out the panels much easier and faster.
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
I have a cheap plasma cutter but it wasn’t worth getting it out for the small area I was working on. For large areas though, it is a huge time saver!

Bro, this is a LOT of love for these old trucks, I 🤎it. Rather than going the extra mile this is more like 🎵 I would walk five hundred miles just to be the man that gets to drive you for another two hundred thousand more do do do do 🎵. Great project, following with great interest, appreciate all the installments so far, cant wait for the next!

Thanks! It's definitely more than I bargained for with all the rust, but It's coming along.

Только хотел написать, что чистить ржавчину проволочным диском не самый лучший вариант, а тут - раз и вы выкатываете лазер)) Классная игрушка.

Nice work very clean ,I have a 81 Toyota hilux 2wd diesel converting to 4wd.

Nice, these 79-83 4wd's look so good. Sometimes I wish mine was 4wd, but I already had an 85 4wd and I really needed a 2wd truck for hauling.

You might want to give "Fitzee's Fabrications" a good watch. He does a great job of explaining a "cut and but" . This will cut your fab time way down.

Curious why you didn’t paint the underside of the battery tray with regular topcoat. Primer is porous and will rust over time. You still have to clean where you spot weld but that is just a small part.
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
The primer sealer is waterproof. I’ll spray top coat in there when I’m painting the engine bay but will also spray under the tray with fluid film, which will creep around the plug welds and protect them from corrosion.

So... what's the price of that laser unit you use? :)
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
This one was $9k after taxes, shipping, duty fees. The 1500w continuous laser I was originally considering was just over $4k delivered. I'll go over the advantages/disadvantages of Pulsed vs. Continuous in the full laser video.

Great video, wicked laser! Curious why you didn’t cut the patch panel out of the donor 1/4 panel? The area under the battery tray was mint. Anyways, nice work as always
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
That's actually a good idea and I didn't even consider it because I've gotten so used to creating panels from cardboard templates lately. On the plus side, I was able to keep that inner fender intact (minus the tray) for another possible rusty Yota in need.

What even is a primer sealer ? Never heard of this before
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
it makes the surface uniform before painting, if you have different colors of primer/bondo over a repair area. In my case I used it because etching primer is porous and can absorb moisture (I'm told) so the primer sealer makes it moisture proof because it's water resistant.

My favorite thing for getting rid of rust was a sandblaster, until now. I want a laser.
@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
The sand blaster is still superior in cleaning hidden spaces. For example, I could have sand blasted under that tray with it still welded in place and gotten it pretty clean (minus the rotted area of course). With the laser, you can only clean as far as the light can reach.

@6thGearGarage10 ай бұрын
Common issue on a lot of vehicles because batteries can leak slightly over time and the acid is corrosive to metal.
