As a proud owner of a 2000 Excursion V10, I applaud you for trying to bring common sense back to being a truck owner. It has always been about the right tool for the job. Not killing ants with sledgehammers. The Diesel crowd is quickly becoming the guy back in the day who lifted his truck with a body lift for no other purpose than to overcompensate. They rack up repair bills that rival house payments to fix all their diesel maintenance issues for a ton a power they likely never need to get the job done. That's the definition of overcompensation.

Nice (and I would say fair) review. I have a 2022 F250 Lariat with the 7.3 and have towed my 9K lb travel trailer over 24,000 miles, from the Midwest to the East Coast, to the Gulf Coast, to Arizona. I have not been over the Colorado Rockies yet but that is coming. Great truck, great engine, and the transmission has done a great job of maintaining speeds both up hill and down hill with the cruise control activated. The 2% failure rate from the cam and lifter problems is certainly something to keep an eye on but its my understanding the majority of those failures have been in commercial vehicles that idle a lot. I have experienced about 9.5 to 10 MPG while towing and about 16 MPG at highway speeds while not towing. In town I see about 10 MPG. However, considering the diesel is $8K more to purchase, has higher maintenance costs and only gets about 3 MPG better millage while towing, I think its a no brainer to go with this engine when you are towing less than 14K lbs.

My 2022 F350 crew cab 8’ long bed 7.3 with 3.73 rear is the best truck I have ever owned. The engine is smooth as glass. It can peel the rear tires. The Super Duty frame is made to tow. This truck is great. I have 28,000 miles on it. No issues. Lifetime average mpg is 14.9 per the lie-o-meter. Most of my tows are utility trailers that any 1/2 ton can pull. I bought this particular truck because of the engine and the long bed and that 48 gal tank. And it is America and I can buy what I want. And the price of my truck XLT was less than my buddy’s Lariat F-150 with a 2.7 turbo. His truck is awesome for a 1/2 ton and he gets good mileage. It’s a Cadillac ride compared to my truck. But I can haul his truck with my truck. My only complaint with my truck is you can’t drink coffee on a bumpy road. I just moved from central FL to south central TN using a 26’ UHaul 2023 F650 with the 7.3 engine loaded to the “gills”. I’ve heard all the bad news, I’m not a Ford fan but this engine performed flawlessly, averaging 8.5 mpg at 70 mph. In normal interstate road conditions in FL and south GA the transmission didn’t downshift on the slight hills and the engine pulled over them just fine. On the downhill side the transmission (in tow/haul) held its gear and the engine braking held the 70 mph. Later as I got into north GA and TN the transmission would downshift one gear and the engine never rev’d over 3300 RPM, normal RPM at 70 mph was 2700 RPM. It made a believer out of me. I was dreading this move if I had to use a V10 powered truck because that engine was a flop from the start. Overhead cam engines don’t make good power until the higher RPM’s and by the that time you can’t stand to be inside the vehicle for the noise. I had that engine in a 1999 motor home that only got 4.6 mpg at 62 mph, and it weighed 6000 lbs less than than the Uhaul truck.

I have a diesel and it’s the way. The engine brake in the winter when towing in the hills, and the power to get over them with no problem makes the difference. Dump trailer of gravel, lumber, mini excavators, the diesel does it all. It also holds up better under load overtime. It’s really an entirely different vehicle under the body. Heavier duty all around and holds up better to strain. I’ll buy more trucks as I continue to grow the company but this truck will be around for quite a bit and still running well. Not bad for 35,000 and 75,000 miles for a 2019. Perhaps some of the earlier diesels with the emissions systems had issues but these have been around for a few years and the engineering is good by now that with proper operation it’s more of a hyped up concern.

Let me tell you what a master mechanic that sees all types of vehicles and works on every model. The design of the motor is simple a basic almost old school. He's already seen these trucks used hard in our area and no failures with 10,000's of thousands of miles already. No power compared to what. The old 7.3 diesels only had 225 hp stock and no more torque than this gas. All manufacturers have parts failures unfortunately. Heck you can put a new engine in this truck cheaper than replacing injection system on a 6.7

You scared me at first! LOL! I just bought a 7.3L F250 and haven't towed with it yet but have hauled a full bed and love it! Diesel is $1.05 more per gallon where I live. If a diesel averages 19mpg and my 7.3 Godzilla averages 13.5 mpg, I spend about ONE PENNY per mile more in fuel to drive the gasser. I can buy lots of gas for $10,000 at 1 cent per mile. Then factor in Oil changes, DEF, and other diesel maintenance and there is way more cost difference. Now if I was towing heavy regularly, I could justify a diesel, but my 7.3 Godzilla is my currently my daily driver.

Wish the same for people that say the gas motor is fine and don’t need a diesel yet have never owned a diesel. Own both then comment. No doubt the gas motor has its place. I’m on fence but when I pull a small cargo trailer with Durango hellcat (more HP and TQ then Godzilla) with it being much lighter then pull same trailer with f450 it’s like night and day. Had many big block gas motors in my day both forced induction and natural. I’d never own a gas motor pulling large profile heavy trailers. That’s diesel territory. Sometimes it’s not just the cost per mile but towing experience and safety (with downhill braking).

I have a 2020 F350 SRW with pretty much the same set up. I’m in the RV transport industry and it has just turned 190k miles. It has no trouble idling at night at the truck stops, I don’t have to worry about fuel, additives anti-gel, or any other, the issues that come along with a diesel. I’ve had the same number two cylinder misfire and have had to changed out the plug wire. But that’s the only issue I’ve had. I do carry a couple of spare plug wires in my truck. I change the oil every 200 hours, the transmission, transfer case and diff every 40K miles. My next super duty will be with the 7.3 Godzilla.

I think there's a strong possibility that the cam & lifter failures might be due to low oil pressure at idle, and have a lotta idle time on them. They have a strange variable volume oil pump on them. Perhaps there's a simple way to bump the oil pressure up should that be the case. Hopefully we get a solid answer soon.

Each to their own, as a commercial truck driver i have a bias towards diesel motors because in my opinion, it is better to have more power and torque than necessary because if an engine doesn't have to work as hard it will last longer. I am not dismissing your like of the 7.3, however to get the same results as a diesel it will have to work harder. I am not trying to predict if it is a good motor or not, from my experience gas motors get worse fuel economy to do the same job and the motor works noticeably harder, not that it can't do it, but, there is a reason big rigs are diesel and not gas powered. Respectfully my opinion

Cool to hear a great experience with a 7.3 as an alternative to diesel. Other than the roller-lifter issue, which more than likely is a bar-stock issue and QA/QC materials issue as you mentioned, the diesels are just not where they need to be with the unreliability of their DEF and DEP systems. They may get it right down the road as time progresses, but as of now all 3 brands are not great for reliability right now and so a good gasser that can handle what most people tow, ie, not a 30k load, is good to know.

For pulling your camper, the 7.3 should do well. It's when you pull a trailer daily that you need a diesel. Or pulling more weight. I have had both big gas engines and diesel engines. The 7.3 is being pushed by Ford because they have bet the Superduty truck line on it. The best towing and hauling engines are the diesels, hands-down. It's the EPA requirements that are driving it, too. Thus, the production of diesels being limited to F350 and heavier for the most part and then for only about 35% of total production. The 7.3 mpg is less than the diesels, power is lower, range between fill-up is less, and mountain towing and hauling will have mpg into single digits. For campers and those who don't really NEED max towing and hauling, F250 and 7.3 are fine. I will stay with my F350 dually diesel, Crew Cab, and enjoy my 21mpg hwy empty and 17-18mpg towing and hauling on any grade.

@ryangreen9501 You just tried to equate apples and oranges. My '03 F350 Lariat, 6.0, 5R110, 4x2, Crew Cab, Dually, long bed isn't strangled like a 6.7 w/DPF and DEF systems. There are many reasons for the resurgence of the 6.0 over the 6.4 and 6.7, and mpg is one of the top 3 as is the absence of those expensive to maintain or replace systems. The energy density will always allow diesel engines of equal displacement to gasoline engines to be more efficient AND powerful. The mpg I get from my 6.0 is in line with that by other 6.0 owners who don't overboost and "hotrod" their rigs. The new 7.3 "Godzilla" gas engine is good for the purposes of most people buying trucks as they aren't generally working them every day. They are already breaking and showing flaws when they are. Ford has never produced a quality, durable diesel engine, but neither has Dodge. The GM Duramax is the product of ISUZU and was "stolen" from them when they were partially owned by GM. Prior to that, GM didn't produce decent diesel engines for medium and light duty either. I had great hopes for the 7.3, but, once again, Ford disappoints.

I would never pay more than 20k for a truck with a Gas engine. Such a waste. Lower resale, greatly lower towing capacity, engine wear out far quicker than a diesel will. Overall inferior to its other variation. I’d gladly pay 100k for a diesel that I know can handle some weight, last over 300k miles and that will still have a resale value after time used in service.

The people that say it doesn't tow good, or it's no where near their diesel, don't understand how V8 gas engines work. Whether it's the 7.3, or Ram 6.4, or GM 6.2 they all tow just fine. It's just different in terms of where there power is made. Higher in the RPM range. I went from a 6.7 cummins to a 6.4 hemi and couldn't be happier. Tows my rig just fine, gets similar fuel economy while towing, and better when not, cheaper to maintain and repair. If you're not towing over 13-14k there's really no reason to get a diesel. As well as I never will ever hear of a 12 to 15 liter 425 or 550 gas powered caterpillar Peterbilt.😂 Why? Gas cannot complete. It's a wash on the fuel argument. Gas is cheaper but you burn the hell out of it pulling a load. Diesel is more expensive but you save fuel with real power. Bottom line , your diesel WILL SURVIVE the punishment, your gas will not. Putting a gas 7.3 ltr. 9000 lbs. pickup in front of 12,000 lbs. trailer Total pull 21,000 lbs./----- Is equivalent to putting a 425 cat(13 ltr.) diesel truck (25,000) lbs., along with a 20,000 lbs.trailer and 40,000 lbs. of frieght. Now you know why semi trucks( the good ones use diesel.....And NOT Gas.. No competition or comparison in any category. Period. Diesels is THE smart choice for pulling. Including train engines to produce electricity for the electric motors. That's funny Mr. Elon😂. People will never learn,..

You are correct if all you do is haul heavy loads on interstates. The reason Ford built the 7.3 is for occasional hauler that doesn't want to deal with the cost of the new chocked (def) diesels. I owned 2,6.7 since 2014 for hauling my hay. 16k gooseneck 15500 to 17k of round bales depending on moisture. The 14 F350 single rear (3:55) was plenty of pulling power. Not necessary for Ford to pump out more but the did. Round trip with that 14 was 11 mpg. Usually 25 to 30 trips a season 150 miles per. 2017 F250 10 to 12 mpg found trip trip after trip. My test hill in this trip from stop at bottom the 14 could easily top it (1 mile) doing 65 mph 4 th gear. 17 would shift into 5th in the dip in the middle of the hill,65 mph topping hill. You could get more bit that was me liking to listen to them pull and out run cars with a load. Now I pull with a 2022 F250 7.3 has 4:30 gears. 10 speed. Same load and trailer same trip over and over. 31 trip this year with the 22 gas. 10 mpg. This gas trucks fuel milage or my cost to deliver is basically the same as my diesels would have been at about $1in difference per gallon between diesel and gas. I stop the same fuel station every time same pump. How's the 7.3 pull? Great. It's not a diesel and nobody claims it can pull with them at extreme weights or hills. My 7.3 can pull my loads well. The test hill it can also top that hill at 65 mph. To do that you will see plenty of rpms and fuel going through it but you also don't get 11mpg with a diesel when you have your foot in it and down in the gears. The overall trip tells the story. The 22 does compete with the diesels I owned. It is saving me money and doing the work as I need it to do. I am amazed how well it does. I was concerned what it would do when I get on an interstate because that is part of that trip. 70 mph with 26k behind me and 4:30s for gears. Will it screaming with high rpms to maintain 70? Nope. 70 mph = 2k rpms in 10th gear. Right in its power. Cruises right along. It likes 70mph or more you like. 7 th gear is 1to 1. 8,9 and 10 are overdrive(s). The 7.3 coupled with the 10 speed is an excellent combination. With the 4:30s my rated towing capacity out of the bed is 18,500. This will pull and it fuel milage is equal in cost of the diesel. Longevity? The def system diesels are not the old low reving diesel. They are high performance engines that shortens their life. I went away from them for that reason. I was paying a premium for much more pulling power than I needed or is legal for a pickup. Yes,the 6.7 can tow a lot more than is legal or safe. Just too expensive on both ends. Price and maintenance for piece of equipment that will start seeing the dealer for def system issues around 70k. Buy what a person wants in this country. We all should support that and be honest about our experiences so others can learn and make good decisions. I personally think that you are hauling heavy for a living. Buy a diesel. The 7.3 is for part time. My initial attraction to it is its simplicity as an engine. Question was will it pull and what's my cost overall. Answer is I'm running less expensive and love pulling ith it.

It's a ford it's bad lol that made me laugh out loud literally. That was our experience with ford trucks and vans for years using them as work trucks and broncos and expeditions as personal vehicles. Can't honestly say we ever owned a "good" one. 2 300 I6 oil pressure gone right at 60k. One 302 gone at 60k. One truck constant brake problems that never did get fixed before we sold it at 90k. Electrical problems in the expedition. Good god I could go on and on and on. Have not had a single problem since switching to GM in 2000.

4:30 gears match up with the 7.3L. Also watch out with letting the motor idle for long periods. Ford put in a variable pressure oil pump that drops to 6psi at idle and doesn’t get oil up to the lifters very well if at all.

I wonder if what you said about the oil pressure is why the cam and lifters are having problems now that you brought that up.

I have a 2021 E350 with the 6 speed transmission and 4.56 gears. It's a converted rv that gets 11.4 mpg most of the time. I love the performance in the mountains.
