It really isn’t that big of a hassle to convert disc to digital. It’s also way cheaper.
@christopherbrown50233 жыл бұрын
For someone who does that often, then maybe not. Way cheaper, yes, but keep something in mind. Kaleidescape has access to the studio's RAW mezzanine file. From that, they create their own file. That new file is then available to customers, and is more often than not, larger than what's encoded on a 4K disc (with less compression also). Sometimes, it's significantly larger. A notable example is 'Avengers: Endgame'. That title's 4K disc is 66GB. The Kaleidescape version, on the other hand, is a whopping 104 GB. That will translate to a far superior experience with the Kaleidescape file, for the consumer (in most cases).

I'm confused about 7.5.4. Does that mean 4 subwoofers? Or maybe 5? Originally 5.1 or 7.1 was meant to signify that the sub channel only has 1/10th of the bandwidth of a regular channel, thus the .1. To my knowledge no movie outside of maybe something from the 60s (Earthquake??) has more than one subwoofer channel, so it's still .1. It's just A LOTTA .1. :) The terminology must've changed so companies would market bigger numbers or something.
@clintstuckey3 жыл бұрын
Seven speakers in the bed layer (seating level), five subwoofers around the room playing the same bass signal from the movie (each independently calibrated to time align, EQ match, and be level matched by Dirac Bass Control in the processor) to deal with room acoustics and room placement issues, (trying for even bass throughout the theater seat to seat) and 4 speakers overhead, to give you a 3d sound field and help with immersion.
@christopherbrown50233 жыл бұрын
@Game Sack You are technically correct. Films are not mixed with more than one discrete LFE channel. At some point, people began stretching the .1 channel designation, to reflect how many subwoofers they have (in their systems). But in most cases, they are simply just multiplying the same .1 LFE channel.
@GameSack3 жыл бұрын
@@clintstuckey Thanks, I'm always confused which number is the subwoofers. Back in my theater days I guess we had a 30.8.0 system.

@@GameSack A lot of people like to list there theater system this way. I guess it sounds better if you can list more speakers. LOL It should be listed as a 7.1.4 with 5 sub woofers. Very nice Kaleidescape theater! one can hope and save! Kaleidescape is more convenient and easier than DIY Plex/Kobe server. But if your able to rip your disc and paste it to a Plex scanned folder its not all that bad. Plus if purchase a NAS like a QNAP/Synology you get more storage and data protection (Raid 6) vs a single large drive inside a Kaleidescape unit. The Zappiti alternative sounds like a hybrid between these two solutions in terms of capability and costs?

Kaleidescape doesn't really need the redundancy because if a drive fails you can simply replace the drive (with their help) and re-download the content. You're otherwise totally correct. The movies are stored locally and do not actually require an internet connection to play. If the company went out of business you'd have no hardware support so eventually the movies you have on your hardware might not be playable - until the hardware failed though it'd be fine as you already have them downloaded locally. If the company was still in business and you had a hardware failure you'd simply need to get the hardware serviced and then re-download the movies on to the repaired/replaced hardware. It's not as dire as you think.
