In the 5th grade, back in 1969, I organized a petition asking for a change in the school dress code, to allow girls to wear trousers between the 1st of November and the 1st of April. (We were in Northern California.). I was able to get a lot of signatures from teachers and parents, so when I presented our arguments and petition to the principal, he listened to me. He agreed to present our proposal at the next PTA meeting for a vote. We won the right to not have freezing legs all winter. I felt so empowered, LOL.

Around the same time my grandmother hosted a protest with her friends in middle school. The whole group showed up in pants. Not one of them got in trouble, because the principal said the rule that they were supposed to wear skirts wouldn't be around for much longer anyway. My great grandmother was in support of the idea. My grandmother is still friends with most of the group, when they grew up they played cards weekly. Now they still talk to each other, even though some of them have retired and moved down south (We live in Michigan and it gets cold) but they still come up for the summer.

A while ago I was to attend a 50’s themed event, so I did what you did- my parents had 1955 yearbooks and I chose one girl on a page where they were all standing on steps together. I found everything except the collar and the glasses at Goodwill. I took a straight-but-with-pleats gray wool skirt and put it with a black cardigan sweater worn backwards. I found a 1950’s small white tack-on rounded collar with a tiny trim on the edge of it on eBay. I wore penny loafers, and put a pale pink scarf in my ponytail. To top it off, I wore real 1950’s cat-eyed glasses with tiny rhinestones from a vintage store! It was so fun when one of the workers at the event, who was my parent’s age, pointed at me (amongst all the 1950’s dressed people) and said, “THAT’s what we dressed like right there!” It was all worth it! 😁
@pepperprovasnik5 жыл бұрын
The collars were usually separate. Called peter pan collars. That way, you could stretch an outfit out and give it a 2 in 1 option for seasons during war time.
@onnalynn70045 жыл бұрын
I have 3 peter pan collars! AND I LOVE THEM! They work for MANY diff styles too. All of mine are authentic vintage. U can wear them with vintage 40s,50s,60s,70s,80s,90s styles(although i personally dont think 90s is vintage...cause i was born 1990 and IM NOT VINTAGE!) anywho...also works with MODERN STYLES! LIKE... Preppy, Goth, Punk, Grunge, Girlie, Kawaii, Sporty, Tomboy, Emo, Scene, Etc etc... THEY ARE AMAZING! I like mixing true vintage clothing items with my modern style... My style is very korean, japanese street styles...kawaii, japanese punk, grunge...the modern/vintage japanese style that takes parts of victorian and 40s and before styles but give it a modern, woodland fairy twist...its NOT lolita...and idk what they style is called...but i like it... I have ALOT of black clothes, with some white, pastel pale pink, blues of all shades, some reds, and some purple...and some browns... I dont do yellow or orange cause it looks bad on me...mostly yellow though...i dont normally do green either... ANYWHO I HIGHLY SUGGEST EVERYBODY GET PETER PAN COLARS! NEW OR VINTAGE ONES CAUSE I LOVE THEM! (i also have some true 1940s tops and skirts, brooches, pants, and true 1890s-1910s clothing items i wear...like under tops/tanks... nickers, hats, etc. I love vintage clothes...i wish i could do vintage daily...buuut i dont like looking nice everyday...im somewhat lazy and more tomboy...so even if i wear a skirt i wear shorts, pants, or THICK leggings under it.. )
@erikawhite35203 жыл бұрын
Actually the collars are called a “dickey” and you can still buy them today. “Peter Pan” refers to that rounded shape on the collar as opposed to pointed tipped collars. “Dickies” had been used in men’s clothing but in the forties expanded into women’s clothing.

@ASmith0015 жыл бұрын
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of grade level to you teach at? I'm a senior in high school and even teachers have a dress code to follow. They can only wear jeans and regular t-shirts on Fridays and the other days they have to wear dress pants, button-ups, skirts, dresses, etc. basically things that look professional and even if it's chilly or cold they can only wear school-related sweatshirts and such. And definitely no leggings without a skirt or a cardigan. I mean some teachers like students can get away with somethings but I assume that the teacher could get in trouble with the higher-ups if caught.

This video made me weirdly nostalgic: my favorite grandma was a school girl in the 40s, dreaming of becoming a fashion designer. She just started „semstress/fashion-school when suddenly school was „over“ due to war and she had to leave her homecountry with her little sister and mother. She was only 15 and her skills in sewing helped her family to survive. Although refugees she always made sure to be in style and managed to craft clothing out of old pads and military parachutes... She never went back to school because she had to provide for her family. Later, when she had a family of her own, she kept sewing for herself, her children (matching outfits hello?!) and eventually me ☺️ I was a little girl when she helped me sew a jumper for my stuffy. She told me lots of stories about war time and the time after. She would have loved this video! It represents a part of her youth. I can hear her commenting these outfits telling her stories 😌 I miss her so much 😭

I absolutely love your videos Rachel. I’ve been watching them for almost a year now and I have to say I almost cried watching this one. Many white vintage fashion/style content creators only use white women as their inspiration for outfits. But you actually took out the time to find WOC for your style inspiration and incorporated it into the video. Not just a mention, not just a throw away. You based an entire outfit around black women and that made me insanely happy. Thank you, Rachel. It might seem like a small thing to some, but to me that meant a lot.

Hi Rachel! A very popular fad in Southern CA in the early ‘50’s was a trio of matching Cashmere cardigan, pullover and socks! All the ‘in’ girls wore them! They were pricey so we budget-minded gals settled for pretty wool blends. A cute little brooch would set it off! And, of course, you had to have saddle shoes! I had begged for a pair and was granted my wish on the condition that I polished them myself! Oh the misery! The white polish came with an applicator with a fuzzy ball on the end! It was almost impossible to keep the white polish from lapping over the edge of the dark blue saddle! It took ages and ages to get it right! Fortunately I outgrew mine and had learn an important lesson: Decide if you want fashion or fad as sometimes the fad is just not worth the effort! Speaking of fads; 50’s petticoats ~ one was not enough, you needed three to get the ‘look!’ The best ones were made from nylon netting, not tulle, to give the proper volume! The edges had to be bound in satin ribbon to keep the net from scratching your legs! I guess it was worth it! We looked pretty cute! 🦋 Linda

when you repainted your walls, I thought I would miss the green, but the white looks AMAZING!

I like pretty much all these outfits, but I’d have to say 3 and 6 are my favorites 😊❤️ I’m relatively new to your channel but I like that you take from everyday style from previous eras in contrast to the classic Hollywood glamour look commonly associated with vintage/retro style - it feels more wearable for everyday and a bit less costumey

Thank you, it's definitely a good inspiration! I finished school a long time ago but I can totally see myself going to work like that *w* I also appreciate the comment on your trousers never being long enough (same problem here!). It's always nice to be reminded that cute outfits are not just for super petite girls :)

Can I just say how much I appreciate you citing a diverse array of inspo shots in different videos? It is super impactful in defetishizing race as something pulled out only for gimmicky virtue signalling. Brava!

Your editing is just *chefs kiss* Could you do vintage Halloween costumes? Even the super creepy ones.

This video came at the perfect time as I’m starting a new job where I have to wear business casual and I know I’m going to run out of outfit ideas quickly!

My husband says... "watch the funny one, you know.. the redhead?"... "you mean rachel maksy?"... " yeeeaaahhh"... he's getting hooked on vintagey lovliness and sass, we both adore your videos, there's always a good laugh involved! so thank you
