The traditional trench where used by the military and that side flap were used to protect the coat from the gun they were putting on the shoulder when marching and so on. I don’t remember what fashion house it was that made the original but it’s quite accessible information if I’m not mistaken.

Thank you for sharing this. That sounds like it comes from personal knowledge. I bet you have a lot of anecdotal knowledge. Would love to sit down and share a pot of tea with you, but I think we live a long way apart. Sending best wishes from Down Under 🥰💐🇦🇺

Burberry designed and made the original trench coat for WW1 troops.

@@Sew_Learning I studied fashion, garment construction, history and have been sewing since 5th grade (with a brake of partying and caos somewhere there). So information comes back when subjects comes around. But me remembering fashion history at 1am is apparently not as it used to be.

I believe the flap on one side on the front of trench coats is the gun flap to reduce the wear on that side. The flap at the back is the storm flap.

great pattern selection Ruan. I am hoping to make a plain black denim jacket when i have a chance so may have to look into some of these

My go to jean jacket is the Alina & Co Hamptons jean jacket- I went down a rabbit hole to find a pattern that had everything I wanted. I have made 5 of them so it was a winner. Searching is harder than making sometimes.

I have made the Sienna Maker Jacket as a coat: it is lovely on and belt hole is so clever. I made it out of a pair of cream cotton curtains. I have another cut out ( this time colourful Ikea curtains) and also the short jacket out of orange canvas cut out. I have just bought the STYLE ARC STACIE jeans jacket but I wish I’d seen this vlog last week because the first and last jackets that you have shown are both VERY nice.

I hear you less is more - too much and procrastination and faff mode takes over with no decision made! Ive got the Sienna jacket on my wish list but now going to add the Russafa jacket. Thanks for sharing your homework. Look forward to seeing your jacket

awesome selection, explained really well. Another rabbit hole to go down! 🐰 That pink Donny shirt is to die for. Pink is my spirit colour.

Its called a storm flap. I believe it is normally on the side where you can pull the other side underneath and I think there will be a button or fastening underneath to do it up. it stops the rain from getting underneath.
@amdeloreyАй бұрын
This was fun Ruan. I could definitely see making one of the Russafa jacket. I really like the big pockets out front. Lining the pockets with flannel would make them super cozy.

I love your picks, Ruan. I’m crazy to make the cropped trench, and I want to try others, too. The Know Me pattern looks like me, so I’ll have to nab that one. There’s not much use for jackets where I live, but linen or a linen blend works for me. Thanks, Ruan! 😘

I was lucky enough to get that dream wardrobe box and have made up the bell jacket in that gorgeous fabric. It was probably my trickest make to date but only because I had never made a jacket before, so never lined anything or done buttonholes 😅 but I love the end result! Thanks for the ideas, like the look of the cropped Sienna 😊

Great video, thank you. 😃 There is also the Atenas jacket from Itch to Stitch for a more traditional look, although this only goes up to US size 20, I believe. 🤔 Looking forward to your final reveal. ❤

A great round up. I agree that the CCP Sienna Jacket is a lovely jacket. I am also thinking of making it in the future and also like the shorter style. I have the Itch to Stitch Atenas Demin Jacket Pattern. I haven't made it up yet, but have the fabric. It just needs to make it to the top of my list! I also love the Pillar Jacket. A sewing friend has made it up in white denim and black cord. Another popular style here in Australia is the Style Arc Stevie. Love your pink Donny shirt. It is so lovely and looks fantastic

LOVE the Closet Core Sienna! Definitely want to make both the longer one and the short utility version. The buttons on the sleeves of the short one are closures for pockets on the sleeves, and the buttoned vent in the back is great, isn't it? I see that The Fold Line in the UK has the paper pattern. Thanks for the great pattern recommendations! ❤

The Sienna Jacket from Closet Core is an excellent pattern. I made it at a retreat/class and everyone looked great in their jackets. I liked it so much that I made another. Thank you for all of your ideas. I enjoy all of your videos.
@helenv2906Ай бұрын
I have made 2 of the jackets from your selection. Depending of how strong your sewing skills are....I would start with the Closet Core, it;s an easy pattern and their instructions are fantastic. If you are having any problem with a the steps...they will help you figure it out. That's a plus in my book. And the second one would be Know me pattern, it's a fantastic pattern to go with High waisted pants/skirt/leggins with cute little boots or snikers. The only possible trictk is the lapel but if you read trough the instructions and practice on a mock lapel first you will be good to go. Hope this gives you a chance to get the jacket you want! Can't wait to see your creations...

Pilar Jacket would be my first choice, though I have made both versions of the Sienna Jacket. Loved making the cropped version in denim - BUT sadly it didn’t suit me. The longer version I love and made in a slightly stretched cotton satin in a small geometric print ( and the pattern matched- goodness knows how!). Looking so forward to seeing your finished make.

Thanks for posting. Last night I cut out the Poas jacket by Itch to Stitch. Will start sewing it tonight. Probably should have waited, although I did want a cropped style. 😉 You have picked some great patterns.

I bought the Pilar jacket kit from Andrea at Beyond the pink door, and loved it so much I made another two of them. So I have a white one, denim colour one, and I actually made one out of remnant of curtain fabric 😅 White with sliver Streak running through it. I always have a nervous breakdown when it comes to the button holes, the practice ones turn out fine,but the moment I start on the important part everything goes wrong 😢

I like number 1, the pattern with the cross pleat at bottom, the sienna and the free pattern. I think it depends on the season. I like the one you chose aswell. I just sewed the downtown jacket. Happy with my choice.

Oh crikey! You're not the only one when it comes to choosing. Analysis paralysis! Love the Closet Core Sienna Maker jacket. I think it could be very smart in the right fabric, rather than a 'work' jacket. I am currently hunting for fabric for the Pattern Emporium Downtown Jacket, which has multiple options of length and back detail.

I have the Pilar pattern and I was intending to make it out of the chunky corduroy from BTPD subscription box and I have the pattern to make the Maison Fauve metropolis jacket. So that is 2 in my plan and now you have shown me that closet core pattern. I have always just moseyed on past that pattern and now I need to go and look at it! It won't be in my plans though, I have more than enough of those. I bought 2 fabrics from 1st for fabric today, because I liked them. 😊

@suebrown5500Ай бұрын
I’ve made the Smitten and it’s gorgeous- made it in linen and lined body in Liberty lawn and sleeves in slippery fabric- this was my first ever jacket and it was very straight forward and I love it! Watched a video on KZbin for the lining. Enjoy!

Great video. I have made the short version of the Sienna Jacket and loved making it. The back vent looks so good and the sleeves actually form pockets as well hence needing the button closure on the sleeve. It is so unique- make it - you will love it!
