Owning a motorcycle is a step towards a lifestyle full of freedom, speed and brave actions. The old-school riders will tell you that there is nothing better than the sound of well-tuned motorcycle engine but there are representatives of the new school that believe that gasoline times in the motorbike industry are over.
The representatives of the new movement support the inventions connected with electric-powered engines and, while the number of people, who would like to try out an electrified bike, is growing, most of manufacturers can’t produce a model with low pricing. Luckily, we were able to find 7 reasonably priced motorcycles that start at just $3,000.
Here is a short list of bikes that could become the Teslas of motorcycle world (all links to the sources of these products could be found in the "Credits" section of this video):
- Evoke Motorcycle, also known as the first affordable urban bike with 75 miles of riding range and speed of 81 miles per hour;
- Zero s ZF7.2 - advanced naked street bike that produces no fumes and noise;
- Tork T6X - the cheapest bike that is made in India but doesn’t lack anything in the technical department;
- Super Soco TC - classic café racer style vehicle with a powerful 3000w Bosch 17-inch hubmotor;
- Sur-Ron - fast dirt bike that will amaze you with its acceleration and quick charging time;
- Super Soco TS - nice looking bike with futuristic design and two batteries lasting for 100 miles;
- Denzel Cafe Racer - the cheapest option on the list but not less interesting for sure.

Datacube: awesome facts and interesting top lists I understand that thank you but what is the point of making a model that goes 28 mph tops that goes no faster than an ebike with a decent motor. It's clearly a motorcycle so it has to be driven on roads and at that speed you won't be able to keep up with casual traffic. Your cheapest model that will cost no less than 3k, you can buy a 50cc scooter for $1100 you can fill the tiny tank up once and your good for days, not to mention you'll probably do better than 40 miles per hour. I mean no disrespect it just an opinion.

And again, design seems to be more important than practicallity. My old bike has fairly good rain- and wind protection and i can put luggage on it, it's confortable, low in weight, has great fuel economy, i can go offroad with it, and the narrow wheels (with allroad tires) have no problems with wet conditions and snow. Practical for everyday use. We all know that most cars have 1 person in them, and that they need a lot of space on the road. While motorbikes are no alternatives for everyone, they can contribute to less traffic jams and less pollution (from both smaller engines and less manufacturing processes), a smaller footprint. Road tax and insurance is cheaper aswell. If we want motorbikes to be an alternative method of transportation, manufacturers should be less worried with design and focus more on practicallity. Come on guys, my bike has to be replaced with something better someday.

Hello, thanks for your comment. We are sure that new bikes will start coming soon. Maybe something that you are looking for already exists. Can you share your image of the perfect electric motorcycle?
@2stroke4me

A simple, trendy and efficient design with a good wind and rain deflecting cowl fairing and hand guards, wire spoked wheels, luggage rack, shaft drive, handle grip heaters, low vehicle weigh, corrosion resistant, durable, good lights, normal front forks with boots and stabilizer and a bit of a straight up riding position. The electronics and batteries should be reliable and easy to recycle. In short, a practical bike, something that would be a good alternative for cars. Smaller traffic jams and a smaller enviromental footprint. Bikes now are "toys" and bikers are often stigmatized, so a good campain on TV and marketing is needed. Too much effort has gone into the design of electric bikes, and i just want a bike that takes me anywhere, through any type of weather and in confort.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
It seems that you are describing a niche that is too small to be mainstream. As you mentioned, bikes are starting to become a fashion statement. Since most riders are to use their electric vehicles within the city zone, the might as well choose a bike that looks good. Practicality isn't trending today...
@2stroke4me
@2stroke4me 6 жыл бұрын
I'm very much aware of that, and i know my idea isn't very viable. I just see both cars and bikes as transportation, when bikes really aren't. They are indeed a fashion statement. I've always been curious about when people buy a car, it must be as safe and practical as possible. But when they go look for a bike, common sense is turned off. It has to be a powerhouse and protective gear is optional. Like i say, it's a shame nobody is promoting motorbikes (or even mopeds) as an alternative form of transportation. (no, this is not a rant and yes, i'm oldfashioned, lol)
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
It seems that the only solution you're left with is getting a plain looking bike and modding it yourself. Nobody is going to satisfy your needs better than yourself. Now about the alternative forms or transportation... They are pushing the vehicles that don't require licensing or extra regulations. The latest hype is the electric bicycles, scooters and boards. Those may be more viable in cities.

You know what? All of these bikes are basically urban toys. The thing that would really break the market open would be a 100/150/200/5000 formula. 100 m/h topspeed, 150 miles real world range (probably amounting to a maximum range of 300 miles at todays claims), a weight below 200 kg and all that for a price of around 5000 US$. A maximum spec Zero for one third of it's current price is the only one coming more or less close to that. Now that is the gap that still has to be closed before electric motorcycles can really take off worldwide. I thank you.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for sharing your opinion, it's a very good one. We can agree on the thing that pricing can come down a lot. As for the range, the longer range would require a larger battery... Consequently, the bike is very unlikely to weight below the threshold that you stated.

the Denzel might look the most vintage of the bunch....but it has the newest motor design, of smaller size and weight but more power(7.5kw to over 10kw peak), Denzel has done other modern looking carbon-fiber eMotorcycles and eBikes too ....most of those other bikes have the same motors that have been around for 10years they still are good and all, just bigger and weigh more and some are only rated for 3kw: like the Sur-Ron, which is very awesome(and might be the bike I would pick from that list if it could be street leagle), its got a $288 HPM3000B from GoldenMotor in it

This is actually our second video about electric motorcycles. The last one was created back in 2016, when the EV movement was only starting up. Although it may be a bit outdated now, there are some great models listed there... The reason why we brought this up is that in the newer video we tried to display newer bikes and ones with lower prices, so we are not surprised to read that some run on motors that have been around for 10 years.
@BenjaminT.Minkler
@BenjaminT.Minkler 6 жыл бұрын
these bikes are all super cool, and I love these lower price points for them....you really made a great video and picked many of the new bikes I've been researching ...yes some of them are slower and have smaller ranges(some are closer to small cheap scooters and powered bicycles) ...and I know the Sur Ron can't be street legal(also look at the Alta Redshift and KTM Freeride for off road)...but still they will all use older tech 18650 cells to make a battery pack and the current gen of motors still is the same from 10years ago; both these things are true even on the most expensive best eBikes out there.....so that was not meant as a complaint on your video or choice of products ..thanks to China and Korea manufacturing, about the only improvement in tech for small EV's has been to get production and parts cost down ....it still will be many years until we see any noticeable jump in tech, performance, or cost; maybe not even in our lifetimes
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
If the 10 year old technology brings power and shows reliability, then there is nothing wrong with using them. Lower pricing could help bringing more bikes out there, consequently, less people would look into the positives of having them. Not just negatives...

I remember back when, when I had an electric scooter. I could not wait in until cars and motorcycles came out. I really want one. They have came a very long way in just the last few years. Still, only one thing is stopping me from buying one. Out side the distance is the charge wait time. It comes down to hours for a full tank or just about 20 minutes. The charge in any wall socket and regeneration charge is awesome. Just the wait time I can not get over. Maybe some day. Way better in cities where you dont have to go far or for those who want to ride their bike or car or plane for only one tank a day. 3 hours would mint get you two rides but it depends on the weather. If it changes while you come to a full charge then the next ride is over instead of only taking about 15 to 20 minutes and your on your way. Really cool bikes. I really want one. Just not realistic yet because of only charge time. As a car. Your stuck on the interstate because of very bad weather and a vehicle accident for hours and you need heat to keep worm. There is no way to change your battery. No one to come and charge it for you to get to the next charging station. Your stuck or worse. Just not realistic. Very good concept. Awesome idea. More trouble then worth. I want both, just not yet.

I'm sorry mate, this is a good video but there's definitely some issues. You gotta read your script like you're confident in your writing. If you're pausing for suspense, it's not working. This is a damn cheap ebike video, just get to the point. Anyone would've fired you on the spot for reading like that in a documentary setting or something similar. For some tips to be a quality KZbinr you gotta read like you care about what you're talking about. I don't mean to offend you at all, but just give yourself some confidence. Other than that, it was a good watch mate. PS maybe include a few links for some of the stuff you talk about. A good handful of us are serious about buying these things.

When you state ‘zero pollution’ do you consider where the electricity is actually generated, be it coal, gas, oil or otherwise? I do think it’s a great idea as no emissions from exhausts in town or cities, but when you also consider where the materials for batteries come from, where they are made and the carbon footprint to get them to us.... are they all that great? Just saying.

gilessmokey ; I think you are overlooking a very important detail in your 'problems' with wanting an eMotorcycle that you can ride for 100miles and charge in freezing weather its not comfortable nor practical to do those things on any motorcycle! yes, getting a eCycle (or even an eCar, like my wife's Nissan Leaf) to run for 100 or more miles at highway speeds is not as easy for them as an ICE vehicle....but most humans don't drive that far every day, and it would be a waste of our time to do a 4hr. 200mile round trip commute daily...on a motorcycle it would be hell ....and just forget about riding any motorcycle in temperatures when its too cold to charge a battery yes, I've actually done these things; riding from Iowa to Nantucket in late October....but even without sub zero snow on the ground(where a motorcycle would be prone to slip and crash), and being on a large heated aerodynamic BMW bike with full gear; it was still very harsh...and even tho my bike was capable of running 4hrs on a tank; I had to stop and get off every 2hrs! so its just silly to say its a problem that an eMotorcycle can't do these things that you wouldn't and don't need to do anyway....these eBikes are designed to do what people need, and they do it better, quieter, and cheaper than an ICEbike

I doubt he would understand....in fact there are many advantages we didn't expect when we started using EV's ....like it took us almost a year before we noticed that when we went somewhere, we just go and come back.....no taking it to the shop, no checking to see if we had to make another stop first to 'fill up'....we fuel our EV's every night, and they are always ready to go their full range every day....sure people say they can go 300miles on a full tank, but how often is their tank full? how often have they run out of cash to buy gasoline and had to drive around on fumes? or just not be able to go or get a ride from someone else? how often do they have to make another quick stop to fill when they are already running late?.....we don't have any of those little daily nuisances any more, and we didn't even realize how inconvenienced we were by that stuff, until we saw other people still doing it to remind us

yeah, the Leaf is great, we lease it...but you can't charge under 0° and the range goes down in the winter....thinking a Bolt or Model 3 for the next car for my Wife, as they have cooled and heated batteries so ambient temps don't matter I just think its crazy when people talk about range tho....as I have a big 7 passenger mercedes gl350 diesel, it will run for 600miles on a tank of petrol! but even in a comfy Benz you can't sit in it that long currently working on converting one of my motorcycles to electic ....as I could use that for at least 70% of my non-winter transportation, then my wife uses the EV car for about 99% of hers....and the big diesel Benz does all of our towing and long trips you really start to feel how hard it is on an ICE car or truck to fire it up, let it warm a little, then to just drive it a short way to work or the store once you have an EV, that just goes....motorcycles and powered bicycles are so much more efficient for transportation, in so many ways...just parking for one(which all our vehicles spend most of their lives doing) as if you drove them a lot more than they were parked, you would be doing like crazy 200,000miles in just a year...but people don't, and only go under 50miles a day in our average human ranges ....if you have a friend or family member that travels more than 50miles a day, you likely never see them except for maybe weekends and holidays gas stations and making that extra stop to fill becomes just so 'gross'; dirty, and even scary to stop at some of those places....once you get away from it and don't have to do it hardly at all....and you can just use cheap electic that you never run out of at home.....even at our grocery stores here in town, they have added free charging stations my wife uses some times just to be cool like that we thought charging would be hard...but its not a hassle at all....easier than charging a phone, because the vehicles just sit in one spot parked to do it when they are left alone, and get used at set times...where the phone you are always trying to use it and keep it with you

- The fact about cooled and heated batteries should be directed at the person that was most concerned about it. - There are electric SUVs out there with 300 miles of range. It is hard to believe that many people could go this much every day (unless travelling on a vacation / driving for work to other states.) - How do you plan to convert it - a personal build? - 50 miles a day. We don't believe that there are even 10% of people, who travel this much on daily basis. - One last thing that interests us the most - did you get a special charger for home use?

The new super soco two thumbs up an excellent electric moped and not a bad price, just one small criticism, it should have a switch to enable it to go 45 for those who want a small moped type bike but not the restriction so long as they have the license to do it, perhaps an app would do the trick. But a very nice looking moped presumably the battery is removable for in house charging, with optional house charger.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
We really liked the option of having an extra slot for the second battery pack. There aren't many electric vehicles that offer something like this.
@flitsies
@flitsies 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree it's a very good idea and a pretty good looking moped. Other companies could learn something from these guys. Charging is the main problem for electric motorcycles and mopeds for many people so being able to take the battery out is very important.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
While charging is a problem, fast charging is something many of us could only dream about... Why don't companies invest in charging facilities?
@flitsies
@flitsies 6 жыл бұрын
I think one of the problems with fast charging on a motorcycle is the size of the charger needed to fast charge due to cooling. Plus the size of the battery in order to accept the fast charge, also even if they do go down the road of fast charging it's still around 2 hours or more at best for a full charge and only around 80% tends to be the trend. But what if your electric motorcycle had modules instead of just one large battery pack? Modules that you were able to slot in and out at will. So your bike is low on power, but you have a stop off at a friends who lives in a tower block, no chargers available but he is happy to let you juice up only problem is you can't get that bike in the elevator, so now you still can't juice up, but what if that battery pack was in modules, you could take out two modules take them into his flat and charge them up, you would then have enough power to get you home or to the next charge point or to another place that will allow you to juice up a module or two. It gives you access to charging facilities that you simply wouldn't have were it not for the modular system used for your battery pack. With out it you depend on ground level chargers that simply don't exist yet.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
The modular battery pack technology that you are describing already exists. It's used on the scooters though. Scooters need smaller packs, so they can be carried around. With motorcycle ones it won't work, they are too heavy.

Why do they all have a shape of a ICE bike? There is no need to have the “tank” shaped that way if there is no fuel tank.
@Datacube
@Datacube 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Look, electric vehicles are already getting a lot of negative feedback for having brave design choices and that's why not many consumers dare to try this new type of transport. We think that the creators of these bikes want to keep them as traditional as possible, with only the drivetrain being modern. As for the tank claim, oddly enough it is still being used to hold "fuel", although a different type... Batteries still need to be placed somewhere.

Actually if the batteries aren't in that it makes a perfect storage space. It's right there in front of you on top for easy access. Way better than a side opening compartment in the frame. Plus it looks more traditional to potential buyers (some people associate futuristic designs with gimmicks) and, in my opinion, just better.

Right now I am only looking for an electric commuter bike but surprisingly, at least in the USA, those aren't something that people like to market or build. The new yamaha xmax is a great one. I want an electric like that. Tired of them being mainly aimed at sports riders. A bike without ample built in storage and comfort focus is not a commuter bike. When I get my second bike, I want an adventure bike that has more power and distance range than these currently have, but what the electrics do have right now is perfect for me if they put out something that is actually perfect for that speed and range of these bikes.

@waltermh111

That bike is a step in the right direction. Maybe in a few years they will be where I need. My problems are : 1) Weight. 600 pounds, sadly I am only 5'7" and 150 pounds. I can handle the 400 pound xmax with 50L top case, but when it tips over, I get the feeling anything over 500 will just be too much, but I would need to do -more testing. I am just not a big guy or a muscle man. 2) Price, $13k is pricey for what it offers. I would prefer it get to 10k or offer more range/speed for that price. (I am ok with the range and speed generally, just not for that price, it is still competing with gas bikes to some degree, so it needs to wow me) 3) Built-in storage space : This isnt a big deal since they offer storage add-ons, but honestly, the built in one should at least be big enough for my large full size, but it seems made more for smalls or quarter helmets. Its a tiny compartment that is almost irrelevant. I actually have a top case along with my large underseat storage and I fill up my underseat with everything for the road motorcycle specific (weather cover, security items, battery charger, etc...) and my top case for my gear and daily stuff. At least 30L inside would be great, but maybe asking too much due to the size of the batteries currently. Anyway, its good that BMW is planning to invest more into electrics, which should keep improving the tech and opening up the market.

Logan Aidan the tires are like any other bikes tires, including how they attach, the dealer you bought it from should be able to repair it, though there isn't much to repair. The chain is like any other bike, and if the engine has a problem they likely will be able to replace it and send the old battery back in. But that's the key, it's called an engine but it's really just a closed battery system, similar to the battery you have in your car, but more sophisticated, yet as easy to replace. If under warranty, then no problem but the one limit right now might be the price of battery replacement outside of warranty and the need to go to the manufacturer, no after market options.

There is license issues, in the US. for example, some e-bikes have software controlled maximum speed, so that the bike can be used without a motorcycle license. laws vary from country to country and even state to state. if a bike can go too fast, they might require a special license, so it all depends on who /where they are marketed. I am certain that the Bosch e-cycle could go faster that it says it can go ( with ahem, modifications ).

Yes it really cost this little. There is a reason for this, let me explain. In India everything is cheaper, so the cost of anything made in India becomes cheaper. Example is Tork T6X. That's why India is able to perform space missions at very much lower cost than NASA. Example: In India, ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission(mission to mars) costs just $74 million, i.e costs less than the $108 million budget of The Martian movie, and even one-ninth of the cost of NASA's $671 million Maven Mission(mission to mars). That's why it's believable. :) ;)

As a result many electric vehicles provide great acceleration from the start. Riding at higher speeds makes a greater load on the battery, so we assume that some of these bikes have speed deliberately limited at such low figures.

Torque is often misunderstood. Because torque is a function of gear ratios and wheel size, etc. Its not a very good measure alone. For example, a winch has a lot to of torque, but it moves very slow.

In this case it is useful to giving the initial push. Many electric vehicles are being enjoyed because of this.

Hello, thanks for the comment. Why are you picking on the cheapest model though?

Mainly because of the marketing company's poorly executed juxtaposition of numbers (28=>82) to falsely inflate the "cool" factor of their product thereby creating false advertising without actually false advertising.

They are cool for sure. At least they are amazing for city commuting. We have had several amazing comments from guys, who own them and they couldn't get enough of it. The speed is electronically limited to make these products comply with various regulations in different countries, so slower models will require you to have less paperwork. So if you are not in the market of motorbikes with 28mph speed limit, check out our newer videos about proper full size electric motorcycles that can go fast and have the range over 150 miles.
