The problem with the radial engine truck is the cooling, as there's not enough airflow to keep it running without overheating and seizing for more than a couple of minutes. The fix was to install an oil cooling system that allowed the truck to make the five minutes or so needed to perform at big truck shows, and that was developed and installed by Radial Engines in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
@thecman26
@thecman26 2 жыл бұрын
Lets not forget that several cylinders are upside down. So oil will fill the combustion chamber. If you don't empty it out you can hydrolock those cylinders and do some major damage to the connecting rods and such! There's a reason radial engines went away quickly!
@patkelley4071
@patkelley4071 2 жыл бұрын
@@thecman26 anyone who uses radials should know to crank the engine over before engaging the ignition. When I was in college I watched a doctor who had just bought an old Cessna 195 (beautiful plane) blow out the lower cylinders when he forgot the rule.
@lucianene7741
@lucianene7741 2 жыл бұрын
@@thecman26 Radials did not go away so quickly, they were pretty common in the 1960's and some are still used today. The reason they lost their dominant market position after WW2 is two-fold. First, the advent of gas turbine engines with much better power/weight ratio, scalability, reliability and streamlining, burning a cheaper fuel, left radials with no chance in the high power market sector. And second, the introduction of flat-4,6 and 8 engines which were simpler, more streamlined and equally well suited for air cooling eliminated the need for radials in the low-power general aviation market.

The Beast did not have a Merlin engine, it had a motor derived from the Merlin, a Meteor tank engine, built by Rover cars. Early ones used Merlin crankcases taken from crashed aircraft, with visible cosmetic damage. The Merlin is single overhead camshaft, bevel driven with 4 valves per cylinder.

My buddy and I were riding our motorcycles to Vegas one day ( Phoenix to Vegas) and I believe it was a Chrysler that was powered by a gas turbine engine blew by us. We came upon it 15 miles ahead of us. The engine was scattered all over the road and they had a support truck cleaning up the mess on the highway. We tried to talk to them, but they declined to say anything about the car. Anyway thought that was interesting.

It's an old set of videos, but it's interesting to watch special cars and never show how they drive on the road and how they accelerate! Drive on the spot so slowly and carefully! When I drove an old refurbished Cadillac, I still enjoyed driving and accelerating and the comfort of the car and its power, especially in urban traffic, where it is often necessary to speed up from behind a traffic light so that other cars can also pass through the green light and no congestion. would occur in Europe's small towns, at intersections! The car is still for driving and a powerful car to enjoy driving, albeit a rare one!

Mario Andretti was supposed to be the driver.STP was the major sponsor. The rules commission kept reducing the size of the intakes until it was no longer competitive. Like the Plymouth super bee and Daytona charger it just got away from everyone and had to be stopped. Both signaling the end of real competition in racing.

Aircraft engines are an incredibly poor choice for cars, especially the turbines. The use profile is completely different with the aircraft engines designed to put out 75% of rate power for virtually 100% duty cycle at a constant rpm and with as close to 100% reliability as possible. They were not designed to put around at 5 to 10% rated power output at vastly varying speeds. Use an aircraft engine if you wish to cruise at 175mph.

@@177SCmaro Depends if it's been de-stressed like the used to do with the Late SWW tanks. It didn't have the stress requirements of High altitude so the Meteor was quite a reliable engine but still had loads of power. If they were using them in full Air trim then yes they would be issues with the more erratic power usage in a car. The early Shermans used Aero Radials too. It had a good power to weight ratio but was prone to overheating when stationary due to lack of airflow through the engine.

Jay Leno's car is cool, but the turbine runs on biodiesel, not cooking oil. The long chain molecules are cracked in the process of making the biodiesel, and methyl groups added on the chain ends. What results is a long way from cooking oil.
