I still remember when news of his death broke. One simple mistake, and he was shot for it. He never had the possibility of rehabilitating himself on the pitch, e.g. by helping Colombia win the Copa América or, in the case of qualifying for France '98, perhaps score the goal that brought Colombia to the knockout stages. In the end, nothing changes the fact that this was cold blooded murder, and that his own goal in the United States was what triggered this murder. And no, even though Andrés Escobar shared the same surname as the long dead Pablo Escobar, he was no relation to Pablo.

In South Africa, there is a Chiefs v Pirates rivalry and I may have not liked the Senzo Meyiwa for his antiques sometimes and that he played for my rival, but the fact that there hasnt been justice for his death to this day is pretty upsetting and sad that South African football lost such a star in the form of Senzo.

Don’t forget the tragic story of Italian striker Erasmo Iacovone,who was tragically killed in a hit and run car accident on the 6th of February,1978. At the time,Iacovone’s team in which he was the captain,Taranto F.C,were equal 2nd in the Italian Serie B and were dreaming of an historic promotion to Serie A. After Iacovone’s death,the Taranto team never recovered from this tragic loss and faded to finish mid-field at the end of the 1977-78 Serie B season and have not come close to promotion to Serie A since. And with the promotion of the Spezia team to Serie A 2 seasons ago,the city of Taranto have the ‘distinction’ of being the largest Italian city never to have a team play in the Serie A.

Another story missing IMO is that of Andrés Escobar, and how he was murdered after returning home. Back in 1994, we thought he was murdered because of the own goal and his surname (though he was no relation to Pablo Escobar), and I still feel that was the case still today. However, apparently his national team manager at the time, Francisco Maturana, said he was likely at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I don't buy that. He's still mourned and held in high regard in Colombia, especially in his hometown Medellín and his club Atlético Nacional.

A case worth mentioning is the murder of Daniel Correa Freitas. He was a midfielder who played for São Paulo, Botafogo and Coritiba in Brazilian Serie A, who was beaten up, tortured and mutilated after attending a party and supposedly getting involved with the host's wife. The murder happened in 2018 when he was 24.

Not association football, but in the NFL there was a defensive back named Pat Tillman, who joined the US Army after 9/11, putting his career on hold. He did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, joined the Army Rangers special forces, and was killed in a friendly fire. Had he fallen in combat it would be one thing, but being killed in a friendly fire incident makes his death even more tragic.

Tillman story is so upsetting. Military tried to cover up how it happened, and lied to his family privately and publicly too. Makes it even more suspicious that he was regularly writing to his brother about how illegal the Iraq war was too…

Pat Tillman’s death is made even more tragic when you realize that he believed the Iraq invasion was illegal and he was vehemently against the atrocities happening in the war. During the friendly fire incident, Tillman was shot three times in the head from less than 10 yards away, then members of his unit burned his body armor and personal notebook. Members of his unit also lied to his family at his memorial service, it didn’t come out till much later that his death was by friendly fire. Not only was Pat Tillman’s death tragic, it was also incredibly suspicious. The official report on his death also noted that was no evidence of enemy fire on the scene and no other member of the unit had been hit. That report also notes that army attorneys tried to hold off a criminal investigation, while army doctors said the wound suggested murder. Anyways, something about the tragic story of Pat Tillman doesn’t line up and as usual the US Army acted unethically.
