Great video, Alfie! I'm brazilian and a Fluminense supporter, so It's really nice to see the 2009's escape been remenbered! It was a perhaps the biggest rollercoster of emotions I've experienced as a fan, since the relegation seemed unavoidble at some point! I really love how much this channel makes the effort to look football (historically and currently) outside of Europe! It's not common for english Football channels and I really appreciate It! 😁 Oh, and I have a video suggestion to make, If it is possible: you could talk about, from a englishman perspective, which individual award is more prestigious and has the fairest criteria - the Ballon D'or x The Fifa Best Player Award (today known as FIFA The Best). It's funny, 'cause from a Brazilian perspective, the FIFA award' is normally more renowned, for being the more "official one" from Football's main Entity. The Ballon D'or got more well known around here arguably in the last two decades, since it was exclusively for Europeans up until 1995. To me, It seems the France Football award is more important, due to It's tradition. I'd like to hear Alfie's opinion on this topic. Greetings!

Platense in Argentina. 1977: Tied tiebreaker, penalties, long enough for goalkeepers to kick (their goalkeeper somehow skipped it). 1978: Won last match, tying would have sent to 3-way tiebraker 1979: 4-way tiebreaker, one to stay. 1985/6: 0-2 to 2-2 in next to last round, 0-3 to 4-4 in last round. 1986/7: A substitute's hat trick to get 3-2 from 0-2. 1987/8: Just good enough run to avoid relegation (3 last seasons were used at this time). Maybe not a single one gets in the list, but the run should.

@@gabdie7188 It was in the stoppage time of the play-off tie vs Karlsruhe in 2014-15...And it was 2nd leg, away game in Karlsruhe 😱 They were in knockdown and with one leg in Bundesliga 2. when Marcelo Diaz scored that free-kick in 92nd minute. Later in the extra time, they scored another goal for 1-2 lead. And in the second extra-time, Karslruhe had a penalty but HSV goalkeeper saved it, with huge help from captain Rafael van der Vaart, who pointed out with his arm to goalkeeper to which side he should go. And he was right 😮😎 They really had some demonic strength and luck which prevented them from going down, for years. They were in constant, horrible relegation trouble since around 2010-11, and except for one season, they regularly were finishing in 14th, 15th and 16th place (play-off relegation place). I think they never finished higher than 13th place. It lasted until 2018 when they ran out of luck, and finished 17th. And from that, they don't have any luck and for about six seasons they are finishing on 3rd or 4th place in second league, every year narrowly missing promotion to Bundesliga. Luck is really a strange thing. What goes around, comes around...But we will back to Bundesliga 1. very soon and we will stay there forever because we belong there...We will be stronger than ever. I remember that 13-14 season very well. It was the season of the Gerrard slip. But really, that slip made people forget it was actually Chelsea who blew it big time, losing to Villa, Sunderland, and Palace, and drawing at home to Norwich in their final 7 games. 10 points dropped and they finished 4 points behind City for the title. But I also remember thoroughly enjoying that Sunderland rescue. I remember watching their game at the Etihad like it was yesterday... Fernandinho scored after 2 minutes and it looked like it would be a classic City rout at home. but Sunderland hung on, got to halftime at just 1-0 down, wickham scored 2 second half goals and they would've won the game had Vito Mannone not spilled a shot from Samir Nasri. Nasri then had a great chance to win the game and missed. As much as their win at Stamford bridge hurt, it was mightily impressive. Jose Mourinho hadn't lost in his first 70-something home league games in charge of Chelsea, and again Sunderland conceded early, and again they came back and this time hung on to win. Mark Schwarzer spilled a rebound and Azpi brought down Altidore late in the game and borini scored on the ensuing penalty. What a mental season that was. The prem is not the same without Sunderland's miracle escapes.

I'm new to your channel and giving your old videos a watch through. Very surprised not to see West Brom's 04-05 season great escape not on here. I will forgive the omission if you make a whole video about it 😂. The story would definitely warrant a full video.

Nigel Pearson was the mastermind for great escape for Carlisle United in 1999, Leicester City in 2015. Pearson failed to save Watford as the club self destructed themselves in July 2020

Day 5: last 7 players to score an World Cup own goal: where are they now? Or how did their careers go?
@goncalodias6053 жыл бұрын
Actually Tondela in the Portuguese league have 2 great escapes in a row: 2015/16 and 2016/17 Records in (W/D/L) In 2015/16 they won 3 and drew 1 of their last 4 with a record of (5-1-1) over the last 7 games including a win away at Porto's stadium to stay up by 1 point on the last day. In 2016-17 they won 5 of their last 6 games to stay up on goal difference by 1 goal, and they would have been relegated in case the two teams had the same GD as they had 4 less goals scored, in the process beating Braga on the last day and Arouca (their relegated counterparts) away from home in the penultimate matchday. They needed to win, Arouca to lose and a 4 goal swing in the last day and actually only left the relegation zone in the 75th minute when Estoril made it 4-2 against Arouca while they were 2-0 up against Braga.

My Great Escape is West Brom 04/05. These ones are better, but I remember it being the first time a team bottom of the league at Christmas was able to avoid the drop.

@@insertgenericusernamehere2402 Not really, if you're picking a men's national team then you have the choice of 15000 people but when you remove kids and older people that probably leaves 5000. Now how many of those 5000 people would even be interested in football at all. Can't really make much of a national team if you're picking from a pool as large as your local neighborhood. Nothing else to it. No point wasting a video on that.

I'd have been tempted to include Barnsley from last season. 5 points from safety and bottom of the league with only 2 to play against Forest and Brentford who were both going for promotion. Injury time winners in both, and other results going their way, they stayed up with almost the last kick of the season, and in the 8 months since have gone from relegation certs to genuine promotion contenders.

the thing that makes the first one even harder is that, besides the brazilian league being easily the most even sided of the worlds top 10 leagues, 4 teams get relegated out of the 20 there, meaning Fluminense had to climb from 20th to 16th being 15 points behind the 16h place with 12 games left, not even counting the other 3 teams above then in the relegation zone. It was indeed true, they were matematically 99% relegated, but hey that's football, although I don't think something like that to that level will ever happen again though. They are still one of the 4 brazilian clubs to not be relegated since the turn of the century thanks to that (together with the 3 that have never been relegated Flamengo, Santos and São Paulo, although Fluminense was relegated in the 90s)

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not but Neigel Pearson is one of the most underrated managers in my lifetime at least. He always keeps teams up no matter what without sacrificing on the enjoyment of the game too much like Big Sam and the like.
