Yes! I was interviewing with a panel of 4 (!) people and they all looked bored and uninterested. One just barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes and another one kept yawning. They basically shuffled me out the door after 30 minutes and then gave me the rudest feedback (at some point she said "I'm sure you've achieved things in your life, but..." Uh, excuse me?! You spoke to me for 30 min and now think you know my entire worth?!). I understand when something isn't a good fit and I don't take it personally, but there's no need to be rude, nor do you need to give degrading feedback. They then emailed me if I would be interested in another role there. Yeah nah, interviews go both ways and you showed me you're not the type of people I want to work with.

They all took turns asking me questions and two members of the panel were absolutely great, but the 3rd person whenever I would give answers no matter how lengthy, would constantly ask me to give even more information, it was odd. The 3rd person had a sour look most of the time while the other 2 were pleasant. After 30 minutes into what was supposed to be an hour long interview, I could definitely see the job wasn't for me. I stopped the interview and thanked everyone for their time, and declined. The 3rd person was shocked, but the other two had an all-knowing look on their faces. I was once approached on LinkedIn, had an informal chat then was interviewed by a manager under the guise of being in chance of a role. Considering who got hired I had no chance. I was then contacted by the recruiter (informal chat #2) to go talk to another manager about a more suitable role (informal chat #3) then invited for interview number 2 at a completely different office 2 hours away when there was an office in my city. I suspect the first manager was vetting me in interview 1 so he could hand me to the more serious manager for brownie points. What a mess. I ghosted them after the 3rd informal interview because the position was underpaid by nearly 1/4 of the salary expectations for my city! The best bit is they were looking for someone to be a sole employee for a whole section who wanted to stay and work there long term. They also bashed the clients to me. Good luck to whoever got that role...

I just had an interview yesterday with what I thought was a bunch of red flags. First off there was no signage or instructions given to let me know where the office was. This business was a facility with a large number of semi trucks going in and out I had to flag down an 18 wheeler to ask where to find the office. 2nd while sitting in the waiting area I observed that there were a number of messages posted for employees to see that were alarmingly unprofessional. 3rd The job described in the interview was nothing like what was written in the job description online. 4th found out there was a large turnover 5th I had noticed that the job had been open for some time so I asked if there was something that they just hadn’t seen from previous interviews. Found out that in the 9 months the position was open they had almost hired 3 to 4 people but because it took them three weeks from the time that they said “we’re going to hire you” to the time that they could start the job every one of them accepted another job in the meantime 6th the technology they were using was about 20 years out of date.

I'm so glad you mentioned the, "why are manhole covers round?" question... For those of you who do not wish to become bored with an anecdotal story, please skip over this! In the late 1990s, a potential employer asked, "why are manhole covers round?" - this question was originally asked by a "world class" company that hires computer technicians and was copied by other companies that wish to become as falsely successful... Me: "OMG! - YOUR QUESTION IS WRONG!" [I am not saying this because it was in vogue to include women as well] Me: (continuing) this is a world class organization which presumably deals with the entire world... In the entire world not all manhole covers are round... In India, - (which is part of this great big world) - there are some manhole covers that are triangular! - a world class organization should recognize that their way is not the only way... - I should ask YOU, "How many of your computer engineers working here or on their own volition have been inside a manhole?" The original company that asked this question and it's many followers who attempted to mimic their false success of this company have since changed their incorrect question with a TRICK question... "How many cows are in Canada?" Incidentally, the academic answer the questioner is expecting regarding manhole covers is, "so that the manhole cover does not fall into the hole." The answer to the next question, in Canada, cows are called elk... Thanks to the interwebs, I have seen fewer and fewer employers ask trick questions over the years...

See, it’s an election year and we want to wait and see what happens before we decide whether to pay anyone new. So, want to start Monday?” Hard no from me

I had an interview today for an entry level, no experience required accountant position in my local small county. I asked them what the training process was like for this role. Theyre answer was that "this is a small team of people and you will not be working with other accountants." Red flag 1: not being able to train a entry level accountant. Also asked how they measure success for this role. They said "we want someone who can communicate and admit when they messed up". Didnt answer the question at all, but alright.

I had an interview but the interviewer kept postponing it by a day and finally a week passed. It was supposed to happen on a Monday.. But eventually it got shifted to the next week Tuesday. Is that a red flag?

Rescheduling your interview multiple times. I’m here after just receiving a call to reschedule my interview for the second time. The secretary even said, “Hopefully nothing happens this time.” And I still haven’t received the link for Teams so really I’m not even sure if this interview is happening on Friday. 😑

Red flag number 6: I attended an interview back in summer of 2023 through an agency. By the time I got to the client site, apparently the JD had changed! When I showed it to them, what I got back was... 'Oh that's out of date' was what one of the interviewers said. 😠

Man, I wish I knew this beforehand. I applied one day and two days later got a call for an interview. And during the interview they told me the job offer I applied for was not available. But they offered me something else and gave reasons why I could be good at. This felt very rushed it kinda felt like they were trying to get the position filled. I accepted it because the pay was much better then the original job I applied for. But I’m nervous it could of been trap just to fill the spot for the meantime

I once asked for a written job description for an engineering job and their reply was: "oh, that makes that you won't do anything that isn't in your description?" I once had a supervisor tell about him: "i'm a color yellow, but I know this about myself. When things get stressful, I get heated" More than once I had simple questions about basic procedures brushed off with annoyance. Clear red flag. These was in engineering jobs in large industrial plants. "This is a multinational with a SME mind set" (in engineering this unequivocally means the worst of both worlds) "You'll need to prove yourself first" (I've been out of school for a while now...) Not understanding the responsibilities of the position they opened the vacancy for. "The guy you are about to replace has started out at the production line" ("does he know I am here to replace him?") "The guy you are about to replace has worked here for 30 years." ("Is he willing to share his responsibilities?") "The guy you are about to replace has started out as a xxx and we want you to start out as a xxx" ("What percentage of his current job is actual engineering?") "The guy you are about to replace worked here started out as xxx, but we feel we are getting past his natural abilities and we want to go to take our systems to the next level. To get you acquainted with the company, we want you to start out as xxx" I once jumped through 5 separate interviews and an intelligence test (basically a first years bachelor's exam) to end up in a self guiding team where one of the team members was doing the interview. He barely graduated his bachelors and interrupted each of my answers to tell me his glory stories when he was a student. Apparently I was not a match for the company, a big multinational. More than once I received genuine insults after I mentioned my focus was attaining the required experience to apply for more responsibility.

Got offered a position by nationwide agency with terrible staff rating and negative reviews, with a huge turn over rate.. dont know why i was even considering them. We only had a zoom interview, I said to the recruiter I would consider the full-time position, but i would first like to arrange a meet and great with the team and see the building. I was told I could not be told the address, only that it was a X distance from my home address and I would not be allowed to visit until i signed the contract and became an employee.

All of her advice is super good except what she said about glassdoor not being total reality glassdoor is pretty much 100% reality!!! Every company I've ever worked for pretty much nearly exactly matched what their glass door reviews said! If you're someone that has no experience to the role you're going for try to look for companies with a 3.8 rating or above if you have experience and can demand more Only work for companies with a 4 star average rating and above.

Hi Madeline, thank you so much for the video. The recruiter from the company I applied for missed the initial phone interview appointment twice (without any notification) and not responding to my follow up emails. Is this a red flag? I think my experience and skills fit well with the job description. I am not sure if it’s better to walk away or continue following up with her…

I also happen to be quite knowledgeable around anything Engineering so destroyed the question. Anyway, I'm going to withdraw from the role tomorrow morning as this wasn't the only red flag, there were plenty more. Thanks for the making the video!

I went to a group interview before my one on one interview for this sales position and they had a ton of current employees in the group interview acting like they they weren’t already employed there as a “joke” but I saw all these people in the group interview so I thought oh shitttt all these people want this position…. I’ve GOTTA try my hardest to get this job…, well they were talking about what you can make and what the other employees are making and whatnot… they were pretty much boasting about the pay…. Saying you have potential to make 80,000-100,000$ to up to 6 figures… depending on your role….. but it’s a roofing company and we’re driving around everywhere just to find damaged roofs… I got a new job but damn I felt mislead and coerced.

Today I didn't join the technical round because when I spoke to the HR I found that something was off. The HR scheduled the interview without checking with me. I told the HR to give me some time. Yet he scheduled that interview which I declined. I am not sure if I did the right thing or not.

Thanx for another great video Madeline. My last interview had almost all the red flags mentioned in your video. After I had 2 successful interviews with the team the final round of interview was the HR interview. The HR manager asked me only and only inappropriate personal questions possibly every inappropriate question in the world was asked. They called the next day saying I had gotten the role and I verbally accepted it too since the team I will be working with looks good and my reporting manager seems like a smart and professional guy but guess what they said they are waiting for an approval on my background check. It's been almost a month they never got back with the offer letter and I had actually rejected a job because I thought I got this role. How stupid was I.

Be aware about how selective a hiring manager is. For some jobs, they will run you thru the ringer, which one typically expects. But there are some that no matter how bad you screw it up, they will still hire you. Most likely it's for a position to help keep their chairs warm.

in the most recent two interviews I had, it was claimed the role was a new one, and in both cases, they rejected all the candidates - one relisted the advert multiple times, apparently to no success in both cases, they were well-established firms (one was 160 years old and still owned by same family that founded it); it's most likely there was never an actual role there and the company just had to be seen to be hiring

Sounds like you have some sort of program or service you offer that helps folks get interviews? I'm somewhat content at my current job but, my wife just finished her AIT for the Army and her first post is on the opposite side of the country from us (on the West Coast) and as we are preparing to relocate, it turns out the company I work for is not licensed in that State (Washington) and cannot employ residents of that State, so when/if I move, looks like I'm out of a job, would love some more information on what you offer for prepping and helping folks with the job search and interview process as it looks like I will be in that process once again.

I interviewed at a company for a position I was very interested in. During phone screening, the hr mentioned there would be 3 interviews in total. After the second interview, I found out that the job title has been changed. During the 3rd interview with the hiring manager, he mentioned that he has another position in the company and would like to see if I'm suitable for both the roles. Then I was scheduled with another hiring manager who interviewed me for the alternate position. After that interview, I only found out that the initial position I had applied for has been cancelled 😢, (which I only found out after asking the HR for an update for the previous interview for the initial position). He also mentioned that there would be a 5th interview for this alternate role 🤦♀️. I am feed up at this point with their indecisive management and lack of communication. If a company can make me disappointed even before I'm hired, then I don't think it is the best place to be. Anyone had a similar experience to mine?

Oh, yeah... selling you on the job and pyramids. Have you ever heard or been subject to (until you found a polite way out) hearing someone tell you all about "my company?" The first time was one I overheard in a restaurant between two women (really one woman talking and the other nodding politely) sitting in a booth next to where I was. My company this and my company that made me want to scream "DOES YOUR COMPANY HAVE A DAMN NAME?" I now know which company it is and ... well..... (one word that starts with the letter A and ends with a Y)
