I was laid off in November and accepted a job in a call center at an insurance company. I was hesitant because I didn't want to go back into insurance and definitely didn't want to go back into a call center. Ended up quitting the job after 3 weeks because it was all around horrible despite the company being pretty decent. I wish I saw this video before I took the offer. Listen to your heart, people!

Thank you! I did experience the "pyramid scheme." They seem to be alive and well in 2023, and thankfully, being a bit older and wiser in life, I didn't fall for it for this time. Classic symptoms: ambiguous pay structure (i.e. you don't know if it's salary or commission only; "uncapped" commissions), group interviews; rapid, high-pressure interview usually done via a group panel of 3 or interviewers, who spent maybe 30 minutes promising big incomes (via commission only of course).

I declined an offer today.. because I asked for higher pay and they were willing to meet it but right off the bat they said if you don't accept this offer today then we're moving right on to the next person.. I automatically said no thanks. They needed an answer right then right there and didn't allow me anytime to consider. Another no go was that they couldn't tell me the schedule even though they claimed it was a set schedule 😒

One place had the cheek to have asked me what my appointment had been for after I rang them to apologise for not having been able to have made their original date and time and had said that an urgent matter had come up so that was no longer possible so we rearranged for another day and at the interview they had asked me what was that appointment for? OK it wasn't anything that was private as it was a gas safety check but that's not the point as they had no business asking what peoples appointments are for! I feel that by accident when that gas safety check was booked on the day that interview was originally due to have taken place by accident when they did that they stopped me from having made a big mistake as when I got asked what had that appointment been for it showed the true nature of the place! I had left the interview hoping I wouldn't be offered the job but I was and with confidence I was polite and said thank you for the offer but no thanks and I feel it was the right decision!

Hi, Madeline. I just watched this video. I have experienced some of these red flags before. A company I interviewed for did not work out for me. They were very strict about calling out/arriving late. I said I like employers who are flexible when it comes to calling out, but this company said that calling out is a no-no. One call-out/tardy will count as a point against me and six points against me means termination. The interviewer also explained to me that there has been turnover and that gave me a gut red-flag feeling about the company. I also interviewed with them a couple years back over the phone and they already gave me the position. However, the offer letter didn't have the salary or my start date. I got that same offer letter twice and no onboarding paperwork to fill out. I forwarded the quote-on-quote offer letter to my mom and she said she doesn't trust this company and I said I don't as well that I had to turn it down. But I currently work at a better company that just promoted me. Thanks again for sharing this video.

I like that they were upfront about their policy on calling out so that you can make an informed decision. The lack of salary and start date in the offer, coupled with the turnover, are red flags. I’m glad you are being thoughtful about this opportunity.

This was affirming. I had that gut feeling … recent interview: was excited about the role, location, reputation, BUT new, untried company with crazy expectations like, “Can you get elephants and giraffes to our grand opening?” (in a small space), asked, “yeah, but what’s the least you’ll take?”, asked “you’re willing to outside market, clean toilets, make meals, and lead the team, as necessary, right?” and family run, kinda reminded me of the Bluths from Arrested Development, each with competing priorities and expectations. Thank you for the affirmation!

1. Their business model 2. Unrealistic Expectations but don’t have support in that role (for example; get hired for manager but you gotta do it alone so you should say I’m not doing this role unless I get 2 people hired to help achieve this outcome) 3. Inadequate compensation (do salary research) 4. Lack of boundaries (intense working) anything that costs you sanity is not worth it 5. Employee turnover (do information interview with current/ last employees) (ask them why the last person leave) 6. Too fast to give you an offer (High roles take a week or many weeks) 7. They are pursuading you. They want to sell the outcome but not how they do it.

Thanks, I need this video. I've fallen into more toxic interviews and jobs than I expected!!!! I greatly appreciate this as someone who easily falls into these traps. I experienced number 7 when going to an information session for the traineeship. All the people said their lives were much better and that they were so supported, but none actually said what their job was. Then even the Q&A was very shady as they still refused to answer the questions properly. It felt uncomfortable.

I wish I didn't take a job that I never applied for. I was in and out within a month. The biggest sign that the company was not one to work for was that the hiring manager admitted they had to let someone go because 'it just wasn't going in.' The same thing essentially happened to me but in retrospect it was actually not likely the employee, it was the fact that the managers had unrealistic expectations of what their employees could achieve within such a short space of time.

They told me I could stay or leave. I should have left to be honest, but I ended up working there for 6 years and having to fight for my raises the whole time.

My last experience was awful. So many red flags was dismissed because I was attracted to the salary and the title. They only gave me a few minutes to read the contract , I had to start the exact same day. There was no sick pay for the first year . My small company wasn’t paying for on time external services, so it affected my performance. I was continously having to pay my students for resources , travel and be told “I’ll get reimbursed”. So it affected my finances . I was also being bullied everyday , experienced racism , I quit 3-4 months in. Never again will I comprise my dignity for an attractive salary.

I decline both offers, it seemed way too quick to be a serene decision. The second I could sense that they wanted to get rid off the current employee who had to be replaced ( especially since there had been a comment about his/her leaving right in front of me ...). They use benefits as a tool to get you to work for lower pay. Remember, unless its 100% company covered benefits these will come out of your low pay. Say you get $20, then you pay for health, dental, vision, retirement contribution , and of course taxes. You wind up bringing in much less. A lot of people do not do the math and get tricked into taking low paying jobs.
