Same, I remember leaving my PS2 turned on for 2 days as I couldn't finish the fight in one go, it took me over 10h. The strategy was basically 2 healer/supports with 1 DPS in Berserk dealing the damage cap. Considering that I was level ~79 and not knowing any strategies, I can say that I am relatively proud with the achievement :P With that said I think the original version of the game made things easier by making all characters have all Licenses available. They changed it because yes, from a game design perspective it's boring to have all 6 party members be basically the same character (can equip any item, learn any spell), but that is also what made things easier. I'm sure that if I had the job system as a kid I would make a stupid combination of jobs that would probably make my characters weaker than they would otherwise be.

I maintain that Emerald is WAAAAAAAY easier than Ruby. Most of the strategies around Ruby center around crazy exploits, either by setting up the 7777 attack (which was barely known at the time of release), or exploits that use dazers, which are only found in a handful places (if not only one place). The fact that he was effected by stop is also EXTREMELY unusual for a boss, making it very unlikely for someone to figure that out on their own. Emerald only really required the knowledge of Final Attack, Phoenix, KotR, Mime, and Underwater materia (and even this isn't 100% necessary), most of which were found through normal progress. Once you get the first cast of KotR off, all you need to do is continue to Mime the attack, and wham-bam he'll be dead. If he does a party wipe, Final Attack and Phoenix have your back. Any Super Boss that can be killed by spamming the "Ultra-Omega-Super-Power Attack" should be considered too easy.

I love this type of video, FF has such a rich history when it comes to challenging fights. I feel I have to mention Bhunivelze+ on Hard difficulty for Lightning Returns, although he doesn't fit the category, because he's not optional, he is IMHO so much harder than both Aeronite and Ereshkigal (another optional boss that can be quite the challenge in LR). As for XII I should mention Omega Mark XII as well, but the Judges are way harder so, moot point 😁 As for other noteworthy bosses I'd mention the optional fight against Noctis in Ignis' DLC in FF XV, he will literally use EVERYTHING against you, Armiger, all of his Ring of the Lucii attacks (especially Alterna). The FFIII iron giant fight is not THAT hard once you're maxed out, what's really excruciating is the grinding process as CoD can be beaten at around lvl50 but you need to be at least lvl85-90 in order to attempt to beat him and there are no easy farming spots aside from the 3 dragons in the cave. Not only that, but in order to max out or nearly max out HP you have to make sure your characters level up as a Black Belt, but since Black Belt is a horrible job to bring into the Iron Giant fight, you have to keep switching jobs back and forth in order to level up your desired jobs lvl AND level up your characters as Black Belts. Not fun and not rewarding at all.

The massive problem we face with Chaos Aeronite is not its HP, it's Regen. Not because Regen heals Aeronite, but because of the status itself. Without Chaos, Lightning or an ennemy can have maximum 5 debuffs and buffs. But some buffs and debuffs can't be remove (in most cases, debuffs that came from a stagger and Regen from Chaos). The first three times we stagger Aeronite, he will add to itself a debuff that will last until the end of the fight. This three debuffs allow you to put only 2 debuffs on Aeronite for damage (Deprotect and Imperil). But if you fight Aeronite in Chaos, he will have 4 buffs/debuffs on it, so you only have 1 possible debuffs instead of 2. That's why this fight is much harder.

I was an avid FF11 player and encountered Absolute Virtue (AV) as well as Pandemonium Warden (PW) in their unnerfed states. Absolute Virtue was killed a few times originally but only through the abuse of the "Wall of Justice". Which was putting Black Mages into a whole other space of the area that only had a thin impassable wall to the area you fought AV in. This would bug out AV and allowed people to kill it. Later AV was patched and a "draw in" effect added that would pull all attackers to it when out of reach. To this day the community still does not 100% understand how AV was originally intended to kill. AV went into "Bracelet Mode" at around 60% where it would just spam AoE Meteors and wipe everyone. Additionally you could not even outendure it as one of it's moved could be the White Mage "Benediction" that would heal it back to full HP. Pandemonium Warden had a fun story when it came out. There was a "???" deep in the ruins to trade your key to. But also a "???" right infront of the town. The first group that got a key traded it to the "???" infront of the town. A Goblin spawned and died in 1 hit. Apparently this "???" was a renmant of the devbuild that SE forgot to take out. While the group eventually got their Key back from a Gamemaster the situation was more than absurd. The original Pandemonium Warden had many many more phases than the one we have today. Including all the different beat tribes of the expansion and the 5 Generals of the city. The group fighting 18 hours went through ALL of these phases to finally meet the real PW. They got it down to 75% where it instantly cast Astral Flow summoning multiple Avatars and exploded the whole room.

Sometime after SE instituted the first version of Log-In points, (where your traded log-in points to a Goblin in Wajoam Woods) i had built up a pretty sizeable stack of points, so i decided to go turn them in for random items. Trading to the goblin eventually an exclamation point appeared over his face (a la Metal Gear Solid) and he gave me a Pandemonium Key. I tried to sell it for the LONGEST time, but never found any buyers. Ended up keeping it in my inventory for the longest. And at some point, well after 99 cap, i was burned out on the game i decided to just put together a group before I took a long break. The drops were mostly considered out-dated by that point, but If i remember correctly defeating him gave an Atma in Abyssea which few people would have had. We slaughtered him. The only drop i specifically remember getting was Dorje, but by that time there were much better staves.

Mannnnn I miss superbosses... and by "miss" I don't mean to imply that they're gone or anything (since plenty of RPGs still have em), but rather, I miss actually trying to beat them. As I've grown up and school and my career has taken more and more of my time, I've found it tricky to engage in most game's difficult endgame/post-endgame content. Over the years, I've built up a rather sizeable backlog of games I would like to play... and I can't move on to a new game if I'm on hour 10 of trying to beat X or Y superboss in Z game. Of course... this varies. Not all superbosses are created equal, after all. Some of em might take long, some of em might not. The ones I miss tackling are the ones that'd take me *hours* to defeat... be it by grinding, smart use of tactics, or both. This doesn't only apply to superbosses, to be honest. I feel that nowadays, I have very little time for some of the other challenges or extra things RPGs offer once you've beaten the story. Nowadays, I beat the main story and move on... It might be a tad sentimental of me to say, but I do kinda miss my younger days when I was able to essentially hyperfocus on 100%ing a game simply because I had the time and lacked the money for getting MORE games haha.
@leeman275343 жыл бұрын
kinda similar - back in the day i used to do challenge runs a lot - i only had maybe 10 games i'd replayed for years. nowadays i don't do those challenges anymore (unless i really want to), becase i'm busy - still a POS with fuck all going for me, i've just got far more games to play to spend that much time and at this point, annoyance, on one game.

The funny thing about Pandemonium Warden and moreso Absolute Virtue is that people did figure out how to beat them early on, but particularly with AV, every time some group found a viable strategy, Square would either nerf the method or buff the boss in some way. The infamous walls strat is basically dragging it far to the north where there's a cliff/mountain. Originally if you had a group of mages come in from a teleport crag entrance to that zone, they could stand on the other side, and nuke Absolute Virtue with no repercussions until it died. So Square changed the game so that if you try to move Absolute Virtue from its starting location's land, it would despawn. Later on, some linkshell got together enough Dark Knights with the infamous Kraken Club. With fully geared DRKs, the best haste gear, the best DPS gear, and a full compliment of Bard and Corsair buffs, using Souleater Blood Weapon zerg method, Absolute Virtue could be killed. So Square change the game and made Absolute Virtue immune to Souleater's damage, and this also changed Souleater's damage to a specific type of damage within the data. They only did it after the Pandy Warden induced nerfs, where they removed 1/3rd of its total HP, because when they did that, the Souleater method took far less prep/gear/KCs. Pandemonium Warden at the 75 cap could be beaten, but the strategy for fighting it is incredibly obtuse. Basically, every 25% of its HP it would change form and perform Astral Flow, and this would pretty much guarantee wiping your alliance. So you needed a 6 man party that was separate, waiting in the wings. Whenever the HP % was coming up, what needed to happen was 16~17 of the 18 main alliance members needed to logout. Then, when the Astral Flow happened, and the remaining players were annihilated, the party waiting would pick Pandemonium Warden up, to keep his HP from regenerating and keep him from despawning. Obviously this takes a massive amount of coordination, and the load times/other issues with logging in and out repeatedly really bloated the fight time. Beyond that you could have Blue Mages "zombie" it by raising them, having them cast Cannonball from its maximum distance, farther than most spells, have them try to kite it, and wittle it down slowly while the parties recovered. Both Absolute Virtue and Pandemonium Warden were bosses that the lead devs put into the game with the intention of them being an unattainable goal to always strive to beat, to try and make sure high end players always stayed hooked to the game. Since players were actually figuring out how to beat Absolute Virtue, and the devs knew that deep down their challenge had been surpassed for real, they created Pandemonium Warden. I got to kill both after the level cap raise. New abilities and new power obtained from being higher than level 75 made them into jokes for any prepared group. The funniest thing was sometime in 2007~2009 years, SE released a hint video trying to show people things they already knew about Absolute Virtue. Like, Baraera is useful because one of his strongest spells is Aeroga IV, and hey, you can lock his 2HRs if you use yours right after he does. What was hilarious is that some of the more dedicated people did digging... or SE admitted years later that in the hint video where they show themselves killing AV, they actually had to turn on God Mode because they themselves weren't skill nor geared enough to kill it naturally.
@josephallen12973 жыл бұрын
I heard about that regarding AV; it was pretty much there for the devs enjoyment and watching players struggle to kill something that could not be killed. Then the wall of justice strategy happened, and they got all salty. Kinda evil they did that.
