Funnily enough this actually made me think of the trainers at the beginning of games you battle most of them probably never received a pokemon like the player so that made them go to different professions to do so either that or gambling.

some other realisitc ways i can think of (some of which not being so good for entertaining videos) getting a starter, are inhariting a starter from friends/family (probably a very common one realistically, same with #5) befriending one and then having them move into a pokeball (has happened a few times in the anime, of someone befriending a 'mon who wants to join them) straight up stealing one from a trainer renting/buying one (if you buy one from team rocket, its like also doing the last one) trading for one "making" one (did you know that there are a surprising amount of pokemon that are straight up dead humans? could also go for the route of making one with an inanimate object which is a better idea as they wont hate you for killing them) finding an abandoned one (if the rains making you wet, its killing that Charmander, let them in.) -kidnapping- knocking out a wild one sneakily and bringing it home, then catching it after it wakes up (cant catch K.O'ed mons, as showed in most games.)

theres a mechanic on pokemon game here is very reallistics, you can give berrys to the wild pokemon and he becomes more easily to get caught. since pokemons ARE like animals on real life this is a good option to get the legendary wich you are having trouble to get
