Just a little word of warning, the chalk cliffs are VERY unstable. That’s the reason they are so white, bits are continuously falling away. You are well advised to keep a safe distance from the edge. Loved the video though
@williamjenman69025 жыл бұрын
Seriously, getting that close to the edge of the cliff is really dangerous. It's often overhanging or fractured, and huge falls happen every year. That's why its a vertical cliff and not a slope - its constantly eroding. ps chalk is a type of limestone!
@carolineb35275 жыл бұрын
Getting that close to the edge is not just dangerous, it's seriously stupid. People die along those cliffs every year and some of them didn't even intend to tempt fate, the ground just went from underneath them. Not only do the people who deliberately get close to the edge put themselves at risk, they also endanger the lives of the rescue services who have to come out to rescue them or their bodies.

A couple of fun facts. At the end of those cliffs is the town I’m from so that’s why I know... Beachy head is the highest chalk cliff in the uk (hence the unfortunate reason it has a high death toll, including suicides and accidental deaths)... Those hills once housed more sheep than anywhere else in the world In a village not too far away (jevington) the infamous posing banoffe pie was invented Also the “flooded land” you started at was actually the cuckmere meanders and they are the most photographed river meanders in the world. Unfortunately the council decided to stop flood defences and so when it rains it now floods

P.S. Yes be very careful around chalk cliffs, that are all along the south coast of the UK, especially in autumn/winter. The rain and winds weaken the cliff face, causing cracks and falls that can happen at any time, day or night. As the cliffs are 250 odd feet high, survival isn't really a possibility.

I live 5 minutes from here. in fact my friends house is on the seafront in the closest town and we can walk right up onto the cliffs. I cringed so hard when you were joking about the chalk falling under you when we have multiple chalk falls throughout the year & people have fallen from taking pictures too close to the edge. Also, the river is normally more defined than what you saw, we've just had a massive ran storm and it flooded over, they had to drain the water to get the river back, I would highly recommend looking at pictures on google of what it normally looks like because it's even more stunning, you can paddle board, kayak all along the river to the sea.

Yes, chalk is a form of limestone, but a very soft one. And those extensive chalk cliffs were formed at the bottom of a tropical sea, 600 feet under the surface, about 150 million years ago. The rate of deposition of the chalk was about 1mm per century. The ‘salt marsh’ was rather unusual on that day, because it is usually bone-dry and reveals the famous serpentine meanders of the river instead. Did you read up about the extensive smuggling history of the area during the 18th & 19th century?

I grew up about half an hour from this place. I remember doing exactly this walk on a school trip when I was 13. In those days (early '90s) even 13-year-olds could be trusted not to accidently throw themselves off a 200 foot cliff. I wonder if that school trip could still happen now...

@@paganant3623 After the Ewe has given birth she will have a number painted on her sides and the lambs will have the same no. so the Farmer knows which lamb belongs to which ewe if they wander. Technically speaking, chalk is a type of limestone, albeit a very soft one. It's mostly calcite. That is also a very beautiful walk on a sunny day, I've walked that area and beyond many times. Not too far from your starting point is Alfriston, which is an old village (or is it a town) further up the Cuckmere and was known for its smuggling. Not far from East Dean is another little village called Jevington were banoffee pie was invented in a restaurant, now closed, called the Hungry Monk. Further along the cliffs towards Eastbourne there is a lighthouse on top of a cliff called Bell Toute, which now operates as an up-market B&B. It was about to fall down the crumblng cliffs, so they put the whole building on rails and pushed it inland some years back. Even further, is a rather more serious lighthouse at be base of Beachy Head, the highest cliff in that part of England at well over 500 feet. Unfortunately it's also known as a suicide spot, and there is a telephone for the Samaritans nearby. As far as the cliffs go they are, of course, unstable, but it tends to be in bad weather that they fall down. If there's a bit that is in imminent danger, then there's usually a sign or a bit roped off.

It's about 90 minutes by train from London to Brighton and close to an hour by bus. Alternatively Eastbourne station is a bit closer to the start of that walk, although if doing it that way you might choose to start in Eastbourne and walk over Beachy Head, which is quite a bit higher. If you walk to Cuckmere Haven from Eastbourne over both Beach Head and the Severn Sisters, it's about 8 miles and there's a pretty good bus service. For the more adventurous, there's an 18 mile walk which I'd recommend over Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters and then inland to the start of this walk, then to Alfriston and back along the northern escarpment of the South Downs (following the South Downs Way) back to Eastbourne. In my view the best circular walk in the South East corner of England and I've done it maybe 20 times.

Great walk and a great video! Your discussion about chalk versus limestone: Chalk is actually a form of limestone (calcium carbonate). It’s very fine and sometimes crumbly (but can also be very hard too), because it’s made from the calcite shells of microscopic sea creatures that lived in deep, warm, tropical oceans in the Cretaceous period. It’s found all over Southern England and Northern France, in great thicknesses. The rivers and streams that flow over chalk provide a rare habitat world-wide. According to www.wildlifetrusts.org/habitats/freshwater/chalk-rivers, only 200 chalk rivers are known globally, 85% of which are found in the UK in southern and eastern England. As for Sherlock Holmes; yes he is a fictional character, but in one of the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the detective did retire to keep bees on the South Downs. I don’t know what the connection is to that house with the blue plaque, but maybe the house was actually mentioned in the story as being Sherlock Holme’s residence.
