I dropped my v strom a few months ago on it's maiden voyage into the great outdoors. I feared that I might never get it back up as I had never dropped a motorcycle before. People make it sound like it's nearly impossible. Well I just pulled it back up without really trying all that hard and was on my way. Guess those dead lifts at the gym weren't for nothing.

XTRider definitely a little bit of technique involved. These later model ADV bikes are really good about getting the motor lower in the frame and feeling a lower center of gravity and except for when I drop it, I feel just as comfortable moving it around obstacles as I did on both my XR650s and CR250R

You’re right about the V Strom. I found a troubled DL 1000 a year ago, bought it for 500 bucks and $200 in parts later, with the help of a good friend, brought it back from the dead and it has been returning the favor ever since. I put some aggressive tires on it and I cannot believe how planted it feels on a gravel road. A good used one sells for typically around $3500- $4000 and is a great way to get your toe in the door.

As a Vstrom rider, i just tell people its a touring bike, cause thats basically all it is. She takes dirt/gravel roads, but it doesnt have the ground clearance to clear even small logs or rocks. I love it though, cause i know i never have to worry about it not making the trip.

IDK if a 690 Enduro R qualifies with everyone here as an "adv bike" but I came across a local Suprmoto club ride in the canyon (paved)...I asked if I could tag along even though I am on low psi knobbies and guess what? I stayed mid pack for the entire 20mile twisty route....I never even had to push the tires never got squirrelly feeling or scary which surprised me as they ALL had 17" slicks front and rear and oversized brakes compared to dual sport bikes....so yes so long as it is not CRAZY speeds an adv bike with DOT knobs and 21" front CAN still haul butt in the Twisties and be VERY fun (I still was running stock TKC 80s BTW)

An adventure bike is a special bike. They're like jeans. They come in a wide range. You have to make your own definition of what exactly an adventure bike is. Do you want some off-road? The ability in a pinch? Mostly off-road? They're a jack of all trades and a master at none. For a guy like me, who isn't a daredevil. They're great. I'm definitely a cautious rider. I can take one just about anywhere and never break its limits. They're great if you only want to buy one bike. If you want an dedicated off-road machine, get a dual sport

Het, I took my off-road modified v-strom up top of mt. Hull in mendocino county ca. I went from ukiah to covelo up the m1 and down the other side!( on a side note, I am 57,I have served in the marines ,so you know I am not a give up kind of guy, and I have been riding all kinds of ancient bikes over the decades that the strom is actually quite a step up from those days ! and I used to take my Queensland heeler everywhere on the tank or in a plastic crate on smaller ones,so much experience and many a story both funny and tragic). Cool videos but some of us older riders aren’t easily classified by what we ride. Sometimes it’s just what we were able to afford and seemed the most practical at the time. In full street trim,I traveled with my ex comfortably for many trips on long journeys and since I am now riding alone and can’t afford a new or used 1190 or something similar, I had to do with turning the thing into a more dirt oriented machine and it has its wants, wire wheels for one and a better tank that has a lower hanging type replacement with extra capacity like on my desert tank on the xr650r. I had the front assembly off the bike and it looked like putting on a lightweight, clip on headlamp and a small bracket for the guages only would take a lot of weight off the front. I also contemplated putting the front end off my Yamaha wr250f upside down fork, 21 “ front wheel on it but I would have had to fabricate a mount for a second caliper and disk on the wheel and it was too much work . When you’re like me and you have more tools and experience than money, you do what you can. I am,however, looking into getting wire rims for it next. I had to put that on hold earlier because my charging system wasn’t working properly and I discovered four completely loose magnets out of six and a burned stator so after finishing those repairs last week, I am ready to look into those wire wheels. Any advice is greatly appreciated and my strom is a 2006 burgundy model with the centerstand and heated grips. The sbk slip ons and remapping was done by previous owner. Oh yeah, before I finish this tiring rant, how do I disable the speed limiter? Something about fooling it into thinking it’s in fourth gear or something? I hope you have a simpler explanation than what I found online so far. Thank you for your patience if you actually got this far!( I always watch your videos to completion,by the way,nod nod!lol)

This is why I have a 250cc adventure bike (Honda Rally - don't you judge me!) ... being able to pick it up after a fall.. (btw my brother-in-law took his 883 sportster and i my virago 750 down a gnarly, muddy dirt road one time)

Is my modded 2011 KLR 650 still considered an ADV Bike? I sunk a lot of money into improving the pathetically inadequate brakes and suspension but it still feels like an old Buick compared to my 790 Duke. Love the old girl anyway!

03 f650gs Dakar abs not getting rid of it. Extremely low cg, you can drag pegs with some trail braking, and it doesn't weigh that much. I have followed dirt bikes with 80/20 tires on it. Unless I ship it it is not leaving the good old USA.

My Africa Twin weights exactly 544 lbs with a full tank, crashbars and case rack. The trick is not to lay it down. Never. But it is still easier to handle on gravel than a 690 Duke or any other road bike alike. I still don't want to pick it up more than once. It is very well possible even without weight training. It's just not a pleasant experience.

going out on a limb here but I am guessing U have the DCT (by the WEIGHT you quoted) BTW my 690 (ENDURO R not a street only Duke) is wonderful even on gravel....just saying in case anyone thought 690s are a handful off-road? Duke YES....Enduro R? No WAY these bikes are Awesome off-road!

Got a 1200GS, "Packing Patty". when she flops over, gotta use the right technique. VStroms are nice, but stay with a 650. I have been a fair amount of offroad, but I had to stay on solid ground, the GS is too heavy and will cut some awesome ruts and bury itself.

My 2013 Triumph Explorer 1200XC carves canyons really well. Sure it's not as agile as my Ducati 999, Tuono or Speed Triple but it can run an impressive pace. As for offroad, it's heavy but has the power to get through some difficult situations. When in doubt, pin it.

A fully outfitted BMW R 1250 GS is parked on a pavement I use on my commuter walk. Case, cages, aux lights.... It's always there, ready, waiting - weekends, work days - not when it rains, though. It does move, however.... it's always squeeky clean. Not a single scratch or chip on the engine guards. Or handguards. Has road tires. It never saw a country road, let alone an adventure. I guess I'm passing by a typical GS owner's bike - a pretentious urban commuting machine.

Alright. i gotta go full squid mode for a minute. i have and love a vstrom 650. ill admit its mediocre at best off road. but it handles fantastic on the street even with 70/30 tires. and it is zippy. like smoked a ford taurus and had no issues getting good and away. it lacks at the top end but up until about 90 it will beet just about anything on 4 wheels under ~70k

There is a reason a 450cc dirt bike is considered for experts. My problems with Suzukis include the odd oil filter- they do not take the oil filter made for a 2011 Mazda RX-8 car like most Japanese bikes, and the sometimes overly complicated regular maintenance. Marquez is the newest Lord of MotoGP, Rossi is lucky to get third place at his over-the-hill age for racing. He is in the top few for GOAT (Greatest of All Time). Hayden from Kentucky has the record for winning the least number of races and still winning the world championship one year on a Honda, because Rossi had a lot of mechanical problems with his Yamaha.
