Another thing: stop referring to worship as only the music portion of the service, when worship is a lifestyle of obedience.

Good evening, Mr. Carr. Thank you for this timely reminder of what Godly worship should be. The worship leaders at my church and many guest speakers have gently addressed these subjects. The church experience is itself an act of worship, when pursued correctly. Many times the church leaders make the mistake of believing that we need the church service to be a pep rally, or a discussion. The Word of G-d does not need a commentary for every sentence, concept, or scripture. Nor do we need to jump around and damage our vocal folds to show our love of the Lord. The point is not congregational commentary as part of the sermon. The Lord Jesus Christ did not need a commentary when He walked the earth, nor did the ancient God-sent prophets. Either the people believed and responded, or they did neither. What we say means nothing if we are not actually living in obedience to the Lord--whether spoken or sung. The point is for us to hear, not focus on the number of amens, or fear silence as the congregants absorb the message. Too often, our leaders try to manipulate the congregants into speaking, because they are uncomfortable with the silence when people are astonished, convicted, or just curious about what they are hearing. The same is true for song. We indeed need time to reflect on the words in our worship songs, not a concert, or an unnatural excitement. Amen and Amen, Mr. Carr. God bless you and your ministry.

Add a number 8, our worship experience is not about making the worship like a rock or rap concert. It’s not a talent show, but an invitation to enter God’s presence.

Yes!! Agree I was looking for this comment..I went to a church where over night turned into what looked and felt like a rock concert they covered the stain glass windows with dark curtains..They turned off the lights and they put on disco lights, heavy electric guitars and in came new pastor (since the old pastor was caught sleeping with prostitutes in the back office was fired the previous week) was like we going to do things different around here and if you don't like it dont let the door hit your a$$ on your way out yes he said a$$..I was like wait did he just say what I think he said?! As soon as the guitars came on and lights cut off I was like bye and never went back

"enter God's presence"? Respectfully, no. Jesus is ALWAYS with us. We inhabit the Spirit of the Living God. We aren't "ushering" anyone "into" His presence when He is already always with us.

@@blooms0120 Ok, I’ll take that rebuke, no problem. I could have used different words to express the worship time as an opportunity for a deeper fellowship. Yes, the Lord is always present with us, but that does not mean that we are always present with Him. There is no “ushering,” but there are moments in a song or while the music plays that stirs you and reminds you that the Lord is near. To your point about “inhabiting,” it is God who inhabits (abides or dwells) in the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). What do you mean when you say “We inhabit the Spirit of the Living God?” Where does the Bible say this?

EXACTLY. That’s always what made me uncomfortable during the youth services at my old church. Sometimes the lead worship singer would be like “alright everybody I want you to put your hands up in the air and surrender yourselves to Jesus.” And I’m like “oh no I’m not comfortable doing that because I’m introverted and worship in a different way.” Most of the time I don’t sing either and I always get weird looks from my parents because of it. I internalize the music and reflect on it. I have never felt comfortable singing or expressing myself freely around most people, and that’s not limited to church (granted, sometimes when the music is deafening I’ll sing because nobody can hear me but nevertheless). I don’t know...it’s like I feel guilty every time I don’t follow along but on the inside I feel totally connected. Like my heart is singing along instead of my lips. I hope that wasn’t too confusing lol.

I'm 71 years of age and am still leading praise/worship at my church. I have always refused to sing anything that is Biblically and theologically unsound. I also learned years ago it's not about me, but God first, and what genre most of the congregants enjoy, in that order. I can honestly say that I always spend time in prayer prior to sending the "set list" to my team. Thank you so much for sharing.

I am also 71 and was brought up in a traditional church in England. I have some favourite traditional hymns, but also some favourite contemporary worship songs, the words of which are very much Spirit filled. I find it sad when traditionalists will not even give modern song writers the time of day. I am not talking rock and roll here, I am talking about Graham Kendrick and Brian Duerksen etc. What better way to start a service than ' Come now is the time to worship '

It's not one of those that jump out at you but that part of the song itself was more man centered than God centered. We were not created to fill a need that God has. We were created for His glory alone. He died on the cross because He is a just God and a loving God, not because of some type of loneliness He couldn't find in the Trinity.
@chipputer

Some of it is left to a bit of interpretation due to the nature of art, but generally you don't want a song that needs a list of justifications within your music set. Generally if a song makes you feel warm fuzzies you should immediately question if the song is focused on GOD or on you and react appropriately.

I had the same experience, Jenny. First I loved it, then heard the controversy on that one line. I didn't see it that way but I accepted the change to, 'You wanted us in heaven with you, so Jesus you brought heaven down.' Either way, it's still one of my favorites I sing in church. God bless

@@frankrossiter you know, I reaay love this song. I didn't even know that there was controversy about it. And I can see where it could mean what persons seem to think it means. My first thought of this song was that it is intimate, personal. I would say I think it's a matter of personal perception. What was the intent of the writer's heart when it was written, only God nows? While I'm concern about all the secular songs coming into churches, and songs that don't glorify the Triune God, I'm not so sure about this one and what everyone is opposing. But I will continue to seek the Holy Spirit's help. Question is, are there any other songs by Hillsong that are questionable? I'm a kinda newbie to their music.

It's a matter of interpretation and sometimes we have to be careful about trying to determine what's in someone else's heart as it concerns God. When I heard the lyrics from "So Will I" I never thought they were referring to evolution. I thought evolving meant growing in pursuit of God's Word and being transformed into what he said. The same for Oh What a Beautiful Name; I never interpreted it as incorrect theology. When she sang you "didn't want heaven without us, so you brought heaven down" my interpretation was God loved us so much, he came down to redeem us.

@@GodsMan500 I think you missed his point. I saw this on Instagram and in the description he discussed how many of today's songs "lack the gravity of God's passion for His glory above all else." I think his point is that the church also learns their theology from songs they sing the same way we learn theology from sermons. The only difference is that we can memorize the songs we sing at church. Now let's talk about the problem we face. Today's "Christian" songs are about man and not God. I realized that's not always bad after reading some of the Psalms, but David always glorified God in his songs instead of himself. Today's songs don't sound any different from the songs that would come out of other religions. Many songs talk about "God" but they don't tell the world who this God is, and people only hear what any religion says about God. "God is powerful"? Every religion says that about their god. Tell me how He drowned Pharaoh and his army and how He rescued Israel. I want Christians songs to talk about God's glory, holiness, love, sacrifice, commitment, death, resurrection, incarnation, and to sharply distinguish Him from the "gods" of other religions.
@ChristOurKing
@ChristOurKing 4 жыл бұрын
@@GodsMan500 This is what John Piper posted on his Instagram a few weeks ago under that quote I shared above: "There's a thread of teaching in some songs today that seems, to me, to lack the gravity of God's passion for the glory of God above all things. Let me say that again. There's a thread of teaching in some songs today that seems, to me, to lack the gravity of God's passion for his glory above all else. "My sense is that, until a congregation is devastated by the outrage and the horror of our sin as demanding and belittling to the glory of God, accompanied by a majestic vision of God's glory and justice and holiness and wrath - until those two realities are taught and felt deep down, the reality of grace and mercy will not be rightly known and cherished by a congregation. It really matters to me, then, how we sing about grace. "It seems to me that there's a strain or a thread of songs that tend to assume that people's sorrow, shame, and difficulties in life are enough of a backdrop (a bad backdrop) to make the mysteries of the glory of the Gospel known over against them. I don't think so. "I don't think the sorrows and the shame that people bring, without being taught what their real condition is, are enough to help them understand grace. In fact, people are going to distort grace if it's not taught against a backdrop of the biblical bad news rather than the bad news that people bring - which they think they understand to be the bad news. It's not the bad news. "The New testament assumes that people need to be taught what their real terrible condition is under the power of sin before grace can really be the God-exalting reality that it is."

They were on the big screen and one singer looked directly into the camera and was smiling and performing like he was in a broadway show. I became very distracted. It wasn't the place for us and we've since found a smaller church where last week one worshipper was almost unable to finish the song because she was caught in praise due to her healing. I knew as we joined her in praise and worship we truly had an open heaven. I don't want my 4 boys to get caught up in whats going on in the atmosphere and miss what's going on in the spirit.

Agree! There are so many seminary-trained people around, and that's not a bad thing in itself, but if the Spirit isn't leading the leader--it doesn't matter. "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it." This applies to every role in the church body. Capable, gifted saints should have a place in the church (to serve) regardless of whether they have any seminary training. I've known many who weren't and are more than able to preach, teach, lead worship, etc., than many today. That way God alone gets the glory!

Same here. Its like the after fall of man that put us out of reach of heaven. So Jesus came down to make a way for us. Right??
@ajclarke9189
@ajclarke9189 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that’s one way to read it… There are basically two interpretations: 1) God intended heaven for us, and didn’t want it to be otherwise; and 2) God didn’t want heaven at all if we weren’t there, as if heaven was incomplete without humanity. One is right. One is wrong. The line is written in such a way that the distinction is unclear. But, there’s a lot of wordplay like that going on in current worship music. A more clumsy example is the song “Jireh,” which has a great chorus, by the way. Here’s the line (my notes in parentheses)… « I wasn’t holding You up » (as in literally, in the air) « So there’s nothing I can do to let You down » (figuratively, to do something of which God disapproves) That’s a logical non sequitur. That’s like saying what happens to Mercury the planet also applies to mercury the element… Or that you’re nothing like your father because one time an apple fell that was nowhere near a tree. It sounds clever, though, because subconsciously you sense the double entendre. But, it usually doesn’t cause you to stop and parse it out. So, a correct denotative/literal meaning can smuggle in an incorrect connotative/figurative meaning, and the lyrics are written as if both meanings are true. I don’t think it’s done with bad intent. I just think right now it’s poetically en vogue in Christian music to hint that God might have a blind spot when it comes to being totally infatuated with “me, myself and I.” That being said, as with “Jireh,” the majority of the song is good. Also, I don’t think worship should be divided along the lines of “thinking” and “feeling.” “Too much thinking” versus “too much emotion.” Both our thoughts and emotions are valid vehicles of worship when they are obedient to Christ. The ultimate goal is to love Him with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.

If you don't want something without somebody, that doesn't mean you're lonely. It means you love them so much. I don't see any flaw with that line cause nothing about it implies being lonely. I mean... it didn't say "You needed us in heaven" or something.
@ernestdavidarko3374
@ernestdavidarko3374 3 жыл бұрын
From what he said, he emphasized on "theological" implication of the lyrics of a song. The ultimate aim of Jesus's coming to earth was to restore us to the father. Man had a relationship with God in the garden of Eden, man was God's friend, but sin created that enmity between us and God. So Christ's coming was to bring us back to God, to have that relationship with had with him before the fall, which happened on Earth. Man's downfall didn't happen in heaven, but right here on earth, therefore the ultimate aim for Christ's coming was to restore that relationship we had with the father right here on Earth, heaven was the bonus. Therefore saying he didn't want heaven without us sounds beautiful, but theologically, it doesn't sound right. In worship, the lyrics of a song must always have a firm foundation direct link from the Scriptures

People don't know most 7-11 songs (until it's played several times I suppose) but the songs are so shallow. When I hear that God is "good", from reading scripture there is a demand that God is much more than "good". I look around during those songs and nobody is signing along but when suddenly "Amazing Grace" is played everyone is singing. I'm a firm believer in the hymns because they are so rich in God's word and theological accuracy. Can we make a hymn a "rock--n-roll" type sound - absolutely! I'm not a leader, but firmly believe that most folks do not join in worship (singing) because they simply don't know how to sing the song, or the band is more of a "show" than true worship of the true living God.

It is not about them but in leading the group into worship so many make it about them. Do they not know that God holds them at a higher standard for leading His people, it’s not a “flex” to be leading worship. It’s a ministry to lead Gods people!! Oh I could go on and on! The second song you brought up about Him not wanting heaven without us, I always perceived as just an expression of His love for us. God wants all to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:3-4). I didn't necessarily perceive that specific lyric as a reference God's loneliness without us. I interpreted it as just singing about His love being so great for us that He would bring heaven down because He does want us to be with Him. Either way, I 100% agree on the point of singing songs that are theologically accurate. If we're singing songs to God, who literally is truth, we should sing truth to Him. Love you brother.

No to Pop concert lighting, Dim lighting. Turn off music time to time and Sing with out music so that congregation needs to feel they are worshiping God along with the church on an individual basis. Stop spending millions of dollars in Worship tech and feed the hungry people in your church who are your immediate neighbours. Stop showcasing musicians on the stage like a music concert. Let the Church face any empty hall and all musicians and Singers standing to the side so that People are NOT DISTRACTED by the musicians. Sorry if all this hurts whoever are reading. This is why I’m a backup singer most of the time. I CAN and often DO do those dramatic riffs. But because I’m not singing lead, it adds to the song rather than detracting from it. The congregation follows the worship leader and on the rare occasion they register what I’m doing, they often tell me it inspired them during worship. There’s one song we do frequently (Won’t Stop Now) that I do this dramatic Freddy Mercury-like slide up to a high note. It started because I was goofing around during rehearsal while learning the song and I assured the worship leader that I wouldn’t do it during worship and she said, “you should!” And now every time we get to that point, it causes a cheer- not for me, but because it’s an exciting point in the song accentuated by the slide and it reminds people that God is not going to stop his blessings.

I used to struggle with this very thing. I can do all the stuff but I toned it down for the sake of church to make sure the congregation wouldn't feel it was coming from the wrong place because this was an old Baptist church. Slowly, I did start to implement certain things because when I sang, I wasn't thinking about sounding good or making the song sound like an R&B song. I had to pray about that and God spoke to me about it. As long as I was using my ability to worship and usher in His presence, it was fine. And the congregation did receive everything I did while leading.

I have no problems with the lyrics of the songs he mentioned. I do have a problem with “Jesus Will” by Anita Wilson. Some of those lyrics are: “Who will make all my decisions for me Jesus Will, Jesus Will” and “Who makes me do right, when I would do wrong Jesus Will, Jesus Will.” These lyrics are not only theologically erroneous, but they are disturbing. I simply change them. I see no problem with the idea of evolution- I don try think it disproves God at all. In fact, science supports God and the idea that all living things were created to survive. So whether gag looks like a tree that’s evolved bc it’s bent towards the sun or the evolution of animal characteristics- I’m fine with all of it bc it speaks to the nature that God created us with. As for God not wanting heaven without us- that’s absolutely true as well. Isn’t that what this whole love story is about? Reconciliation and fellowship like what mankind had with God in the garden? In order to achieve that, God left His throne and came in the form of man- Jesus, The Christ. The Bible explicitly states that Christ was God robed in flesh. So yes, He left heaven and came down to redeem us Himself. And his motivation was love.
@MissPurposeDriven

@lukie harris I disagree- I think God actually didn’t want heaven without us. There is no implication in that, that God needs us. It simply means that His preference, His desire, His choice, His want is to have us be with Him there. This doesn’t have to be complicated. He wants us in heaven with Him. (Or put another way- he didn’t want heaven without us) And I’m not sure why anyone would disagree with that.

If the song is glorifying to God, and sung from the heart, it shouldn't matter the style of music. The music of the late 60's early 70's AKA Jesus music, lead to a huge revival in the USA with many coming to Christ. I wish Christians would spend more time examining themselves,and less time finding faults in others.

Thanks for the video. Here is one that frustrates me: play the song in a key that everyone can sing. Most hymns were written so that everyone can sing them without straining. With newer music, the songs are written to showcase the artists’ vocals and range. Don’t be afraid to change the key if it is too high for the congregation. Thanks
@jamesdanko2465
@jamesdanko2465 4 жыл бұрын
All due respect, congregation key doesn’t exist. People naturally have differing vocal ranges, you got tenors, bassists, sopranos, baritones, all that good stuff. So what might be too high for someone, is just right for another person. So what happened when you bring the song down because it’s “too high” well now it’s too low for some others. Your congregation is too diverse a population for something like that to apply. Also, when someone sings higher in their register, it has more energy. And in my experience, more energy means that’s you’re better able to promote an atmosphere of worship that points to Christ. And also, some people don’t even sing during worship, they might be praying or just lifting their hands, there’s many different ways to worship besides just singing
@garofaldo
@garofaldo 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesdanko2465 Maybe there is no "congregational key," but even with different vocal ranges in different people there is such a thing as a vocal sweet spot. Depending on the melodic range, certain keys will work for most people. This is what happens when choirs sing in unison, and is what hymnal editors look at when putting hymnals together. What is also true is that as a society we are singing less, and so less is expected of our singing abilities. The older hymns are being lowered from their original keys (less energetic, you are correct!), and a lot of new stuff barely has any range.

Great advice but there is one issue that worship leaders need to stop doing; the vast majority of parishioners don't like it when there is more than 3 times a lyric is repeated, it is not just redundant but people drop out of worshipping and it frustrates then. As you said, the worship leaders job is to lead them into God's presence not do a performance. This I believe, is number one. Number two for worship leaders. Use a monitor so you can hear yourself. So many singers are way of key or flat so bad that people can't follow. Use a monitor.

I like what a pastor from Europe said about this topic: "Most services have 1-1 1/2 hours of praise and worship, 45 minutes of sermon, and 5 minutes of prayer. How different things would be if we spent time in prayer first, then went into the sermon, and saved praise and worship for last? The praise and worship experience would be richer and more meaningful, because God moved in hearts during prayer and that extended into the sermon time as well."

It doesn't require deafening volume (one of my pet peeves), fancy lights or smoke machines... it does require humility, and a relationship with Jesus. I am thankful that someone is addressing these issues. As a 64 year old woman who has been worshiping through music in many churches for the last 40 years, I say it is about time we addressed this lol. I look forward to listening to your ideas. I feel our churches have been lacking many things and have been praying about this over the years. I am a watchman and a prophet and a teacher as God began revealing to me at 63 years of age in 2020. Surprise and happy birthday to me lol. My heart has been greatly burdened by what I have seen in our churches. How we do things! He leads me to churches. When I walk in the first thing he says is, “where are my prophets.” I was educated a Baptist. Told prophets were no more. At first I did not even know what a prophet was little lone what they did in a church. I had to go in search of it. Weird stuff started to happen to me. I started to see things on the faces of people. Then those things actually started speaking to me. I thought I was literally losing my freaking mind. My Baptist teachings did not prepare me for this introduction into the unseen world. Wow!!! It is not just the music of our churches that needs an overhaul but the whole structure of the church. Apparently God thinks we have missed the boat as to the correct operation of His Church assembling and operation. First you have the pastor at the head. Then the Apostles which I as yet have no idea who they are. Then you have the prophets who guard each ministry in the church. Then you have the teachers etc as instructed by scripture. And guess what. You can have more than one gift even though the Baptist’s tell you otherwise. When it was written,”my people perish because of lack of knowledge”, He was not kidding. If we want revival in America our churches have to be in order. We are out of order in almost every way according to the things God is showing me. We must pray that God will light our churches up with the knowledge and wisdom of God. Pray that the Holy Spirit will wash over our churches like a tsunami wave. Forgive us Father for forsaking or leaving our churches unprotected by setting them up how we think they should be and not the way you instructed. So thank you for setting us on the right path. One where the Holy Spirit can move in and among us and we are not just led by a format or routine.

Having been a worship leader for almost 15 years I learned a lot in that time about the role. I just want to say that the responsibilities are sometimes heavy and more difficult than it seems.

I agree! We seem to have an abundance of love, support and understanding for our lead pastors but don't recognize the burden that worship pastors carry...the huge responsibility of leading a congregation to the throne of God for worship. We tend to take worship leaders for granted, especially if they are volunteers.

I have moved from free church to a small village church and have joined the choir where it is explained that we are there to lead the church into worship. I love the hymns we sing, the lyrics really teach. Your video so echoed my heart. Gotta share with a friend!

I’m thankful for “worship LEADERS” that actually lead and even “command” and are not up there to showcase talent. Many times as a new convert I didn’t know how to worship through problems or pain and if I trusted and listened to my feelings I wouldn’t have received deliverance and breakthrough the way I did. I would come in, sit and would have left the same but because I heard a command that gave me direction I was able to get up and be one with what God was doing so I don’t fully agree with that statement. I believe commands sometimes expose rebellion in our own heart and we really don’t like that. Worship Leaders are called and anointed to lead for a reason and we are called to follow. I have genuinely grown in my worship because of the challenge to not give God the same worship but something that cost me something and sometimes that was standing, dancing, shouting, clapping when my flesh wasn’t feeling it and that’s when I encountered great breakthrough in my life and what I was going through not because I was left to figure it out on my own or left to be comfortable. Worship is powerful and when you know the power of it you don’t want any one to miss it or get left out leaving the same.

I was thinking the same thing but than I took the notions he maybe talking about when you have to "bump and prime" people so to say. Saying it and moving on is one thing but continually demanding and some times I've heard them say if you don't feeling like I do you kissing something or your are dead if you don't move, is going over board. People need to be lead(God says..with loving kindness have I draw thee) not demanded..

Thank you Soo much for this comment! I totally agree. It's so sad these so called rules have gone out and alot of people are watching and learning from it. Everyone has their opinion on what worship is in this end time but what is God's way? Never for once did you refer people to the Bible to see how God wants to do it instead you're calling out people's songs. Hmmm please and please let's watch out how we jugde situations, people. Jesus is coming and he'll hold you accountable of all that you say!!!

Totally agree... David commanded his soul to worship; thus, worship leaders should impart this command on those who don't know about it or those who don't feel like worshiping.

While I agree with what you stated, worship leaders are to be clear and precise. Many people do not equate the word evolve with the word change. I'm speaking as a worship leader and an educator. Most people need to hear simple language that focuses on God and God alone.

@@danielleowusu5162 indeed. That's the reason why Sir Allan said we know it in our heart if we really are leading the congregation to worship or just performing in front. Worship leaders have to be led by the Holy Spirit in order to lead the church to worship. I hope I make sense with my words?

I don't necessarily think it's bullying, but the approach may be wrong. I believe the PROPER response would be, " Family let's worship the Lord,in the way HIS SPIRIT prompts you?" For we all need to recognize that the SPIRIT of GOD is intelligent.

I have been bullied in these situations. It was clear to me that the person leading the worship believed that they knew what was right and wanted everyone to follow their lead (=obey), as when I didn't stand up, they restarted the same song Three times, trying to get everyone to join in. It was very manipulative.

I remember years ago that I wasn't really deep with God and i was in a youth camp, it was worship in that moment and I'm just starting to sing to God like seriously, but i wasn't having some gesture that almost everyone is doing like lifting their hands higher, feeling the song, and i was just there shy but trying to sing to God deeper but quietly and my aunty approached me and said( i dont exactly remember), but something like"Give your all to God", "lift up your hands", "worship Him deeper"....and at that moment I really got offended, and instead of trying to sing To God, I got interrupted and felt insecure and i think i started to have some hatred thought because of what she did. I say to everyone out there that DO NOT TO FORCE !

Chats With Flo yes, it’s also the worship leader or his/her elders responsibility to ensure the selection of songs/music is theologically accurate and communicates a rich profound meaning that seeks to honor and worship God, too much worship music contains trance like repetitive melodies and prolonged instrumentals that only entice the flesh rather than the spirit and we ought to be worshipping not only in Spirit but truth as well.
