When Nightmare Before Christmas was released a whole lot of people (studio execs, film critics, and even the general public) did not know what to make of it. After all, it is a blending of 2 very distinct holidays. It was only modestly successful at the box office. Over the years it's become a classic and has largely been embraced. So Disney gets to try and make a few more bucks off it.

Um.. Sorry but Coraline is a little more beloved than you think it is... And it was the only one of the "follow-ups" to EVEN COME CLOSE to the brilliance of The Night are Before Christmas. Even more so than its intended "sequel-like" follow-up, The Corpse Bride, which ended up being not half as brilliant, and a little too obviously trying to appeal to that audience without being an outright sequel. Corpse Bride was still good and it's association with Nightmare is clear, but Coraline succeeded where it failed.

Coraline isn't a "follow up" of Nightmare, it's not even directed/produced by Tim Burton nor did he write the screen play. It's based off of a book. And Corpse Bride wasn't a "sequel-like follow up" either, I don't know where you got the impression that it was? It's a Tim Burton film and has similar clay animation style/technique but its a standalone story. Not a sequel nor a prequel. Many people were disappointed by the film strictly because they were expecting something like that or another instant cult classic for emo/goth kids and it wasn't either of those things.

I understand that alot of hard work goes into a computer generated scene, countless hours and someone probably sees that scene as their creative love child. But theres something so special about taking your hands and moving something to literally bring it to life on screen in a way that CGI can't replicate. Theyre both arts in their own respect, but I can see why someone who spent 2 years animating a 10 minute long sequence would feel like CGI is "copping out," you know?

I love Coraline. It would be a great movie to make an episode about as the animators used a load of original animation techniques to make it and it's design process was quite interesting. For example, Coraline was the first animated character to have a full wardrobe and they hand knitted/sewn all her clothes.

I love that this guy counts this film as a Christmas classic. My work had a door decorating contest for Christmas and one person used this film as the inspiration for their door. When one of the judges didn't understand and was horrified at the visuals, before the movie was explained, the reaction was priceless.

BULLSHIT! This is a Christmas movie. At least here is why I consider it as such. It only has one Halloween song, but it has 4 Christmas songs. Halloween is only in the first 10/15 mins. The rest is about Christmas. Christmas is kinda in the title. Plus, viewing it as a Christmas movie makes it a bit more special. You don't get many Christmas films with dark and spooky imagery.

Paused at the Coraline bit, wondering if everyone had the same thoughts as me. Sure enough... But seriously. Coraline, Paranorman and Kubo are all great. Haven't seen the Boxtrolls but Laika's movies combine story and character that are between decent and very high calibre with a visual style that is a top shelf thrill to watch. It's clear that the animators WANT to be doing that work. Every moment is a joy to watch.

Cinefix, you were so close to mentioning it but I guess you didn't research enough. In the scene when the toys attacked the children at #7, the toys were originally supposed to be dolls of Mikey Mouse (the mouse-ghost thing) and Donald Duck (the duck on wheels). But Disney didn't like the idea of using their iconic character to attack kids so they demanded the toys to change. But the kept the same animals the same and changed the toys and even changed the children into wearing Disney pajamas (Mickey and Donald PJs) because Burton really, REALLY wanted that scene in there.

I personally believe this is more of a Halloween movie in tone but because it has Christmas elements and a plot leading up to Christmas it can be watched around either holiday. Personally I like watching it on Halloween night since my Christmas movie marathon starts in November so that it can end off my Halloween marathon but also sort of go into my Christmas movie marathon.
