If you struggle with the unhealthy habit of apologizing too much, even for things that shouldn’t be held against you, then it’s time for a change. There are certain things in life that you absolutely should never have to apologize for.

Here’s a mini true story: I once forgot my jacket at the playground, there was a stack of lost jackets and I looked through them but I couldn’t find my jacket. So I decided to go outside, I opened the door but then realized that when I was going to go outside to get it, the door would close and the doors would lock, so I took a jacket from the lost jackets and placed it there to prevent it from closing. After taking my jacket I said “I’m sorry” to the jacket. I’m weird.

Naturally, thats how u think but why do something that YOU dont want or cant do? Doing it cuz u think u'll hurt them is worse. People rather u do something for or with them willingly not forcefully (unless the person abuses and loves to control others which is another reason to say no).

I'm curious what other people think about saying "I'm sorry" when someone tells you they're having a problem that you know you can't help with. I have a friend that gets on my case for this because she sees it as accepting responsibility for their problems. And in a way it kind of is? Like shorthand for "I'm sorry that I can't help with that." I've tried "that sucks" but it feels dismissive. And "are you ok?" but as someone that suffers from depression I know the pressure behind that question. "I'm sorry" just feels right to me, anything else feels dismissive of their problem. Sometimes I use "Can I help?" but "I'm sorry" is the first thing I'm compelled to say when I feel like someone is having a problem I can't help with. And I'm just not sure if my friend is right about that being an unhealthy response or not.
@ihopeicanchangethisnamelat7108
@ihopeicanchangethisnamelat7108 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s like how if someone your friend knows died, you would say ‘I’m sorry’. It’s not, ‘I’m sorry, that was my fault’ it’s ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ or ‘I’m sorry you have a problem’. And at the same time, it’s ‘I’m sorry I can’t help you’ or ‘I’m sorry I can’t do anything about it’. It’s expressing your sympathy for them as well.

The five most frequent regrets at life's end: 1. I wish I had the courage to live a life that was true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard. 3. Saying sorry is a force of habit. As I grow more I realize my self worth and that’s finding my happiness. That last part when you added the dancing part I quickly noticed it was “Happiness” by Red Velvet that it was dancing to, It made me happy to know that you know them too. It’s just the simple stuffs that makes me smile, thank you for the whole video it was really relatable and self discipline to saying sorry less. TY :)

Some people think and feel as if the space they take has to be respected. Like a person walking a straight line and won't care if he bumps into someone else. Some call it rude, angry, aggressive.. or just someone who doesn't give a fack. Sorry is a word to start or end a conversation.

Regarding the toxic friend topic: I have a slightly uncommon situation where my friend isn’t necessarily a toxic person, she’s just inconsiderate. It’s not like she’s mean or anything; she’s really nice and extroverted. I don’t really think she did anything wrong...The issue is, she can be extremely talkative and say some things that come out the wrong way. I’m sure she doesn’t mean it, but I don’t know how to tell her without sounding rude or aggressive. Another problem is that she can’t take a hint. Sometimes I need to take a break from her, but she constantly calls me and texts me everyday, saying things like, “Am I not good enough?”, “I’m sorry I’m such a big screw-up.”, “Do you hate me?/Are you mad at me?” And of course I’m not angry with her in any way, and I tell her this. I usually let her know that I’m out somewhere or just simply can’t talk, but whenever I respond late or don’t see her message, she spams me with these guilt-tripping messages. That’s why I don’t know how to confront her about this. And another thing, she often is rude with my parents or sister if she comes over at any time. She never addresses my parents, or straight up ignores them, and she doesn’t respect my sister’s space sometimes. I honestly don’t know what to do about her, and I sometimes wonder if I’m overreacting. I could really use some advice, especially if you’re in a similar situation. Thanks.

True story on #4. So between my best friend and I, they are the most outgoing of the two of us. They end up in more relationships and generally have more people going after them. They also have more things going on in their life that they want to share with me. This meant that they kept on calling me to tell me about this, which I didn't mind. Until I got tired of hearing the same things over and over again. Because I don't know how to say no (and they don't know how to take no for an answer) I ended up ignoring their phone calls. And they just kept calling (even at two in the morning sometimes). Then one day they just stopped. When the time came for me to send them a message (they needed to get back to somebody and that person thought that they were being ignored so they turned to me) my friend ignored all my messages, even though they were important for THEM and not me. I was going to an emotional rough patch a few days later and ended up sending them a 3-minute-long apology voice note. That they only listened to days after I had sent it and had given a cold response in return. A week later they sent me a message saying that they were done being petty and that we could talk again.

I feel like sometimes apologies are more saying "I understand" than "I want to be better for you". For example, when you are in a position of authority, and someone asks you to do something, and you can't do it because it is out of your range of control. You acknowledge the person and understand their request, but inform them that you cannot do more and feel bad that you cannot do anything about it.

Another thing that you never need to say sorry is whennu speak your mind. Do not say sorry for saying what you think of someone or something that they are doing, dont care if they act sad, fake cry or yell at you for being "rude". All you gotta do is tell that person what you are thinking, if they dont respect that then they are the only ones in the wrong.

I have a cousin, they sometimes encourages me sometimes but then downgrades me. If I don’t laugh at their jokes I’m “holding” my laughter back. They say they support me and listen to me, so I try to do that too. But then they make me feel bad. If they kill me in a game celebration is allowed but if I kill her celebration is not allowed. If I’m first place they get mad and sometimes end the call because they are mad I won and they didn’t. When we were playing this game, one of the whole group was chosen as a killer we made a promise to tell the other person if one of us was the killer, when I was it. I TOLD HER, and then I accidentally killed her. I told her if she wanted to kill me I would let her but, she became the killer and broke the promise and killed me WITHOUT telling me. I was angry she didn’t tell me she was the killer NOT because she killed me.

They use all the secrets I’ve told them against me to keep me with them or do what they tell me to do. And then they says it’s “just a joke” even tho I tell them to not make such jokes because it makes me rethink my decision and makes me think I shouldn’t have told them.

And I have another cousin who makes me do everything she could’ve done themself. They don’t like it when I JOKE with them but they JOKE all THEY TIME. Funny story: I was working on something upstairs and then farted and it stank, Then that cousin came upstairs and I told them to stay away because I didn’t want them to smell the fart and make fun of me, THEY think the opposite and thinks it’s because I think of them badly and calles me a stupid bi***, like all the time. IF I CALL Them A NAME LIKE THAT They WOULD BE REALLY MAD AND STUFF. When they joke they expect others to NOT be mad, but when we joke THEY BECOME MAD. LIKE CHOOSE ONE “NO JOKE” or “YES JOKES” WE MAKE LITERALLY THE SAME JOKES, IT IS REALLY ALL ABOUT IF ITS me or THEM

"Is there anyone in your life who drains you emotionally?" Me: uh yeah, my fucking parents, and I literally cannot properly get away from either of them, because I live with my mom, and she keeps trying to force me to interact with my father(I'm ashamed to even call him that) while turning around and saying "you have a choice, and you have a voice, you get to decide how much time you spend with your dad" and THEN when I'm trying to make a point against her when she tries to force me to socialize, go somewhere I don't want to etc. she gets all pissy and suddenly "I am your mother, we are going" and I swear, she fucking WONDERS why I no longer like being near her! I mean, I'm kinda toxic and I am aware of that, but nothing pisses me off more than someone who is very obviously toxic and either doesn't realize it, or has such a fat ego that they can't admit it.

Armyforever 9597 thanks, honestly I'm a bit scared, because my brother is going of to college in a few weeks(in another state no less), and he's the only one in this bullshit family that keeps me sane! I'm absolutely terrible at keeping friendships, especially when I don't see them physically, because of anxiety I have no social skills and often have nothing to talk about, so I just decide not to try in the first place. It scares me that he'll be so far away that we might grow apart and never get to communicate. And hen he does leave, I'll have to deal with both of my parents alone; my mom is gonna get lonely bc I like putting my on mental health first by staying away in my room whenever I can, and my father is going to continue to force me to socialize with people I don't like and have nothing to talk about with, and the thing I hate most about him is that my piece of shut father doesn't see my social anxiety as a "good reason" *not* to socialize and stay at his house all day, the only way I can get out of him dragging me places I don't want to go is by using my Chronic Eudicardia(chronic hives itch no known cause) as a scapegoat. Just last year he wanted to drag me and my brother all over the city(I just wanted to sit on the air mattress I was sleeping on and draw) I asked if we could just go back to his house because I wasn't in the mood and didn't have the emotional energy to do anything else, and I added that the hives on my feet were beginning to burn, and this fucker says-- and I fucking quote "Well, not having the energy to go isn't really a good reason but, since your feet are burning I guess we can go back." And then sighs in disappointment like it's *my* fucking fault!! And what's more, a few days later he was dragging me and my brother to a New Years Eve party thing with his friend Harley(his hairdresser, he's chill so I didn't mind), and me and my brother were making Mac n Cheese using a really good recipe my brother found, I ended up doing a lot of the work(according to my brother) and I asked my father to help clean up and he said "well it's your job to clean up after yourself" and then I replied "well you're gonna eat some of it right? (There's a rule in our family that whoever eats, cleans, so that the work load is kinda balanced)" and replies "well yeah" and STILL refuses to help! Mind you, this took a lot of ingredients, multiple pans, and damn near two hours before we could even get it in the oven, and made one hell of a mess as he doesn't have much counter space. And then, when we get there, this fucker doesn't eat anything at all! The only ones who thanked me and my brother were Harley and his wife, and even they didn't eat any of it! So I was understandably pissed, as that was hours of work, and cleanup from me and my brother, all for nothing. And on the way back, he says "thanks for helping Duncan with the MAC n Cheese (dead name), even though he did most of the work." And me and my brother were in so much shock at the diminishing, sexist, bullshit he just said, but holy shit I had never been so livid, if we weren't in the car, I woulda slapped the shit outta him right then and there. And all that's only in the span of three weeks, there's countless other shit I could talk about, but I'd rather not make this any longer than it has to be. Long story short; both of my parents are toxic, but my damned father is the most disgusting piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with, and that coming from a butch who was bullied as a kid for having a broken leg, and being a ginger. God this world is bullshit. But honestly I'm just glad my brother is getting out while he can, he's going to culinary school, and I'll miss him, but I hope he does well. I doubt you'll have read this far, but if you have, thanks for letting me properly rant, it's been a scarily long time since I've been able to do so without hearing "I understand your anger, but you need to let it go"

Ginger Racoon took a while to read 😂 but don’t worry about that. And no you shouldn’t need to let go of ur anger, the people who told u that are just stupid af and doesn’t know how to help u or they think it’s no biggie. People like to compare pains and they may compare ur pain as nothing big. Which is not true because everyone’s pains is equally big in different ways. Now about this situation. Well you spoke a lot about ur dad but what about ur mum? It seems that u have more anger toward ur dad than your mum? Am I wrong? Please correct if I’m wrong. Btw I’m not a psychologist but I know how it feels when you want someone to talk to and I want to be able to help someone even if I can’t get that, you know what I mean right? Anyways if you want to rant more, I don’t mind, I’ll gladly listen to it(well read it but u get it). I can see that you clearly didn’t have a good childhood and it was probably traumatising I assume, again correct me if I’m wrong. And your parents being toxic is not helping at all. You have already been damaged emotionally and mentally when you were younger. And your parents continuing to do so, is obviously not good for your health. You don’t have to tell me but I’m guessing you might be in ur teenage years, I am too, and i just want to ask whether if there’s a reason why they are like that? Perhaps something bad happened to them for them to be like this to you? I know it’s about you, but first I’m trying to understand if perhaps the parents had a reason why they’re being like this towards you and obviously no reasons will be good enough for why they’re treating u like this as you are being affected mentally and emotionally, but I hope you understand what I mean? And sorry for the longggg paragraph😂 I was wondering whether you are able to leave with ur brother or not? Or is there any friends that are willing to keep you for sleepovers etc? Oh waitttt sorry I’m so stupid 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I just realised we’re in quarantine so never mind that. Well it’s gonna be really hard...I know this suggestion I’m about to make is gonna sound stupid to you but just hear me out alright? Have you ever sat down with your parents and actually spoke to them about how you feel and why you feel this and that and that you really don’t want to go out etc, you don’t have to go into details or anything, u can just give the brief of it. I know it’s a crazy thing to do, but that is one of the simple solutions you can do in this time, otherwise if there wasn’t any quarantining then I would’ve said that you should sleep over at ur friend’s house to get some space away from them and maybe take a walk if u want,to clear ur mind a little. It is proven that if you walk for a certain amount of time(I’m sorry but my memory is crap😅so idk the exact time) it helps lighten ur mood up. I’m not joking about that fact it’s true! But if you think talking to ur parents is not gonna work at all, and they won’t listen to you then let me know and you can continue to rant as well and I’m still here for you!

It was a 24-year-old college who first told me (27!) that I constantly apologised. “Hey, in this team you are the one giving the orders, don’t apologise for it!” I began to watch my self and saw that my most often used word was “entschuldigung” And get this, even/or especially then when I was right! Even today (56) I still hardly dear to contradict other people, I still feel, I’m not allowed to, have no right, my opinion cant possibly be right, you are stupid, don’t put yourself forward… hear the “parents”? but sometimes at work, or with the builders etc. you have to. so, I think nr. 8. should be: believe in yourself and your experience to state your opinion without guilt!

Jay Smith racism The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. So basically, you’re being racist, thinking that all white people think slavery is good and that all white people are racist. @Jay Smith ... Hi Jay👋🏻 ... I’m Eurasian ... 1/2 Swedish: 1/2 Chinese . . . I have what’s called porcelain skin ... you can see my veins and I was always told how beautiful my skin was, because it was blemish free . . . I became very self conscious and couldn’t accept all the compliments I would get every day. Sounds like a good problem to have, like “Mo money/ mo problems ...” 😣 ... I’m telling you all this because you seem to be unhappy about something else that doesn’t have to do with the color of one’s skin ... I was given up for adoption and the people who were supposed to get me and knew my heritage beforehand ... decided after seeing me, that they didn’t want me because I wouldn’t look like their natural child. They didn’t say it was because I looked💯% Asian, but I did. I had black hair and dark gray eyes and they were both blonde and blue eyed ... legally they were obligated to take me, but the director of the organization would never force a child on people who obviously didn’t want to be my parents and were showing their bigotry but hid it in saying how it was best for me to go to a different family. I’m grateful I didn’t look like I did at 2 ... blonde hair and almond shaped blue eyes😏 ... My parents told me God had made sure I went to the right family. They were white, but had dark hair and my mom had dark brown eyes ... I’ve got an older brother who was born looking exactly like what that family wanted ... I’ve never looked like anyone but me. I grew up in a town of about 35,000 people ... but no Asians ... I was called ... Casper👻 ... Ricer🍚 ... my “favorite” exotic🥡... by members of my parent’s family, who were careful not to say it in front of my parents ... even when I was very young, I knew some of them didn’t think I belonged. My brother ... never heard anything even close to reminding him, he was adopted. As if we needed to be reminded🙄 ... I have always acted as if it didn’t bother me ... I also pretended I was colorblind ... I was determined not to judge a person by the color of their skin. I know how it feels not to fit in ... even within my family. We’ve come a long way ... but recent events show us just how much farther we have to go ... I hope you don’t dislike me because of my skin. I couldn’t help it ... I even remember that they didn’t make cosmetics light enough to match my skin ... not a problem for a man, but what if I had acne, I wouldn’t have been able to cover it ... I still hate to have my picture taken ... I don’t ever look like the others and I cringe at the thought of everyone walking around with a camera in their hands🙅🏻‍♀️ ... I can’t imagine what horror that would’ve been. I’m sorry I went on ... I’ve had this bottled up for over 50 years ... I wish you all the best and I pray you will live long enough to experience racial equality . . .I wish I could say I will too, but I just don’t know anymore. You have your whole life ahead of you and you can be a part of the change ... your children will live in a different world... I truly believe that. God bless you Jay🙏🏻 ... I did have a old friend who was manipulating me quite a lot, after months of it I decided “okay this is enough” but after I did that, she sent all her friends and everyone else after me because she spread fake rumors with everyone else believing them and not hearing my side of the story. She’s still doing it today but I decided to ignore her and everyone else that decided to bring me down. So if anyone’s reading this and is dealing with this then cut them out of your life periodt.

Don’t get me wrong, she’s my friend and I love her, but it’s just so exhausting to just listen to her talk about her problems and bragging for how skinny she is and how long she stayed up for, and then whenever I do anything she gets mad at me even though another friend did the exact same thing.

With that said I understand these points and I have never even questioned my sorry's. On the one hand I know so many people who apologize for every little thing they do or say and on the other hand I know people who would never say sorry. As a young adult I find it fascinating when people my age missuse their sorry's and listening to this got me thinking about why so many do use it wrong. I thought it was universal thinking when it comes to this matter but I guess I just had the advantage of my parents using it correctly and teaching me the same.
