I've posted this same thing elsewhere but I remember hearing from a self-defense instructor that if calling out for help is the only option then 'help' (see Kitty Genovese) or 'rape' or 'murder' are not the best words to attract a crowd. No word works better than 'fire!'. Not many people will think 'Someone else will deal with it' and roll over and go back to sleep if they think a raging out of control fire is anywhere near them. Apologies to anyone who's already read this bit of advice but if it ends up helping even one person I'm glad I reposted it.

I am so sorry about the loss of your dad. However when you said a truck piled high with junk my first thought was to get at least 6 car lengths behind him in case some junk fell out and safety for a quick stop. Again truly sorry for your loss. So glad your mum found a great guy you all like. Seems hard to do Reading abt all the step parents.

I'm more concerned with how poorly he treated her while they were lost and afterwards too. Screaming in her face while she was panicking, ignoring her fear of falling asleep and not waking up (a valid fear when lost in the wild at night), blaming her for everything as if she'd twisted his arm to get him there... Yikes.

@@MistressSuki92 Oh yeah that sucks. I and my now ex fiance went on a canoe expedition to the Rio Grande with our junior college and he was bitching at me the entire time. It got so bad that our teacher / group leader grabbed our canoe and got up in his face and threatened to send us both home, but he was really threatening him. We were one of the only boats that didn't flip over in the rapids, and my SO was still bitching about the way I was doing things even though I wasn't doing anything wrong. I know what it's like to be stuck in nature with an abusive asshole.

@@melissadwiggins Honestly I think before people get married they should do a series of things together so you can see what the other is like in high stress/rage inducing situations. You should go camping/out into the wild together, you should go a day with snail speed internet together, and you should put together a piece of furniture together. Doing these things will definitely show you who you're possibly marrying and what they'll be like in shitty times.

@@MistressSuki92 that's definitely a good idea! I feel like I've seen that on a game show of some sort. Me and that asshole broke up a couple of months later. We went on the expedition in March of 09; in May of the same year, he went back to his home state of SD (we both lived in MS at the time; I still do) to visit, and never came back. I say good riddance. He can go be abusive to someone else, though I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

The tree climbing story where the guy fell, it reminds me of when I was 12 or 13. I was over at my godmother's house and the girl across the street, Nicole, used to come over and play with me. My godmother had this old hose that was one of those flat hoses that click in to another hose to lengthen it, not alike, but the same concept of a seatbelt. This gave me an idea. I climbed up on the magnolia tree that was taller than my godmother's tri-level house. I found a decent sized branch and threw the hose over. I managed to configure it into a harness around my legs and then around my waist and it was perfect. When Nicole came over, I decided to show her. We both climbed up the tree and when we got to the predetermined branch, she asked if I would hold her glasses, to which I obliged. The hose was fastened to the branch above the one we were standing on. I went ahead and started wrapping the hose around her and finally got it just right. -click- and the hose was connected. Approximately 3-5 seconds later I heard another noise, but this time it was a crack. I was 15 ft in the air, but not for long. The harness held her securely in place as predicted; so she was safe. Ad I came down, I was determined to keep her glasses from breaking so I held them in my right hand as I made the fast descent and held it above my head. When I landed it was with a squat and my left hand on the ground. I immediately felt horrible pain in my wrist and looked down to see my hand bent back far further than it should be. I thought that maybe I had dislocated it so in my panic I put it against my chest and pushed it back to its normal position. Thankfully, my adrenaline was coursing and I couldn't feel a thing besides the initial break. When I got to the hospital and did x-rays, the doctor told me that it was just a hairline fracture and I was lucky that they didn't have to set the bone. I then told him about the positioning of my hand and how I put it to my chest and pushed it back into place. The doctor looked amazed and said "Well you got the hard part out of the way yourself didn't you?" As I had never broken a bone before I didn't know that it had to be set back into position. In the end I'd wear a cast for 6 weeks and it still gives me a little problem every now and then, but I lived and the glasses didn't break either! 🤣😂😆😁😊

We had a tire swing in our backyard on the farm. My dad stood in the bucket of our Oliver 88 loader tractor to hang it. We had many hours of fun on it. Something that I'll never forget... my sister was mowing near the swing with our dangerous Mozall walk behind when we heard her scream. She had hit some #9 wire and a 5" chunk went through her shoe and through her foot, sticking out of both ends. Why that wire was there right next to the house is a mystery. Off to town to the doctor. Another thing I won't forget happened to me in the late 1960's. My dad had bought an old barn on auction that we deconstructed to use the lumber for other projects. The roof ends were only about 8 feet from the ground. Dumb kid that I was, I jumped off and promptly landed on a board with a long nail sticking up. It went through my boot, through my arch and through the top of my boot. Ow. LOL, the things kids do to get out of working.

When I was a kid playing at my grandma's one time I fell off a pile of cement rubble onto a fairly large nail that was sticking out of a 2x4. It went in about 3-4 inches to the upper left of my manly parts into my left hip. Another time while camping I got stung on the tongue by a bee that flew into my can of soda without me noticing it. It was in rural Oregon so my mom & I ended up staying the night at some random fire fighter lady's house because she had a tank of oxygen on the ready just in case my tongue swelled up & started choking me. Another time at a family party at my mom's best friend's house my siblings & cousins & I were playing around a huge fire pit that seemingly looked completely out/cold. I was walking/balancing around it on the rocks & my foot slipped into it. Ended up with 3rd degree burns & now 30+ years later I still have about a 1inch by 4 inch scar on the side of my foot. Turned out she had used it earlier that day & still had hot coals underneath the ash. Another time camping at the coast I fell out of a tree I was climbing & a jagged broken stick cut the side of my stomach & I have about a 2 inch scar there still to this day. Also broke my wrist the first time I went snowboarding. Growing up in the 80's & 90's was great lol. Good times!

1. I'm really glad the guy in the last story came out and said it because I was going to anyway- his father was so utterly selfish in not wearing a seatbelt. I can't imagine letting ego or a slight amount of discomfort cause me to forgo something that is often literally the difference between life and death, especially if I had kids depending on me. I was in one major car accident and my seatbelt is the only reason I'm alive. The car looked like a crushed ball of tinfoil. And in the case of the story, the fact that everyone else was OK somehow makes the story even more upsetting/frustrating; they all got to leave the hospital the next day while the dad died all because of one stupid decision. 2. Who the hell goes hiking WITHOUT A WATER BOTTLE?!

story 4 is similar to the one I've seen in a documentary, where a couple left by their cable car and tour guide when they decided to go find a waterfall in a mountain. They were lightly dress, didn't bring any water and only had a digital camera with them. They even found a body of a dead man who have been reported missing for a long time while in the process of leaving the mountain. They did end up getting rescued when one of them decided to burn the bushes around them (they got the lighter from the dead man backpack) thus signalling their rescuer of their location. Luckily when they were lost, it was not during winter/rainy season. But just like this couple, they did end up breaking up.
