On this video I talk about the difference in chain speed for a 7 Vs 8 pin rim sprocket.

Cool info & details for the people. My 390xp wears an 8pin.

I'm new to chainsaw carving and need to convert some of my saws from a 3/8" pitch to 1/4". I am using Echo saws with spur sprockets currently. I am finding rim sprockets that are 1/4" pitch to do that job. However, if I buy the 1/4" drum and rim, what do I need to know to order a 3/8" rim so I can use the saw back and forth? For example, if I buy an Archer 1/4" drum and rim, can I purchase any of their 3/8" For Husqvarna to put on it or am I going to have to purchase a specific echo rim? I would think that as long as you get the right drum, all rims would essentially be interchangeable as long as you're using the appropriate gauge? Thank You

I assume the 1/4 drum will be a small spline set up. So as long as you get a 1/4 and 3/8 small spline rim, it should be a simple swap game. Only other thing I would look at and make sure of, is that the 1/4 isnt some special spline or something, I wouldn't think so, but just something to check in to. 👍🏻just remember to swap the bars 😆 🤣

Great video just 1 question: if i go from a spur sprocket 6 tooth to a center drive sprocket 7 tooth, will I loose torque? I'm assuming that i will, My saw if its relevant is a Stihl 009L

I would say a little but probably not very noticeable. I notice the main differences in bigger wood, like 12/14"++, as far as the torque goes. But the added chain speed will well over take that in 12" and smaller wood.

I like 7 pin myself!

I always swap back and fourth depending on what saw I may use and what I’m cutting. 7 pin is all around good no matter what tho 👍

I just converted a CS590 to rim. I think I will try an 8 tooth.
@dubbssawshop9 ай бұрын
8 pin should def pick up the chain speed a bit. The 590 is a torquey saw anyhow so it shouldn't suffer to much.

Thanks for the info. My question is: stepping up to a longer bar, and moving from a 7t to an 8t sprocket will increase chain speed and help the engine pull the longer chain? 🤔
@dubbssawshop7 ай бұрын
The 7t sprocket will be better for a longer bar, 8t gives you more chain speed but will hurt your torque for pulling the longer bar. If you have a torquey saw, it'll probably help out. The 8 tooth will be fine you just won't be able to dog it in or push as hard, let the chain work and it'll be fine.

@@dubbssawshop Thanks for getting back! I see on Amazon they also offer a 6t sprocket for my saw. For running a bit longer bar would that help even more with the torque. My saw is old runs good. Has a 20" bar with 56cc's. I plan to do a muffler mod and tweak the carb plus going from 063 gauge to 050 and a skip tooth chain should be things to help the engine when I need to switch to a 24" bar, ...and perhaps the sprocket swap.

@@pipesmcgee9270 that sounds like a great plan, yes the 6t will give you more torque. I'll help out anytime I can.

@pipesmcgee9270 my cs 600 ran a 28" bar with full skip chain ok for some big trunks i needed to buck once I put a 7 tooth on it. I normally run the 8 tooth and then I forgot to switch back to the 7 when I buried the regular 20" bar in some heavy wood and cooked the saw... so yeah 7 tooth is handy!
