I’m way deep in the rabbit hole in watches, but sometimes you have to step out and see the perspective of those who don’t know watches to understand how Rolex pulled us. In my opinion, here in NYC, I remember back in 2013ish noticing apart wealthy people on the subway and streets of Manhattan from regular people, very simple, unnoticeable things like a Canada Goose coat “before the hype” quality shirts and shoes that you know they look regular but are solid looking, so under the radar but expensive once you figure out the brand someway. One of those Items I noticed where Rolex watches, they just shined more but in a subtle way and look so perfect, no other brands shines like Rolex with the white gold indices, ceramic and the 904 steel, or looked so perfectly shaped. Not knowing anything about watches I always could tell a Rolex from anything else’s, and that’s what got me obsessed with the brand. Then after knowing the brand, that’s when I started appreciating why they’re on top.

@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer I always wonder why Rolex never made the Cellini line apart and bring back their old rose logo, like Tudor. In order to “compete” with Patek they have to display, decorate and innovate their movements. They can’t even do a moon function right, A Cellini is only nice in the front but not he back.

On your pricing comments, I believe you're correct on the price of a Sub. My first one was about $1000 in the early 80's. Compare Mercedes or Porsche pricing from that time to today. A Mercedes or a Porsche has about doubled or (x 2.5) in cost from '85 to today. How can Rolex charge 9 to 10 times more?
@JoeGiz64
@JoeGiz64 Жыл бұрын
Also agree with the earlier pricing. In the early 90’s i bought a two tone sub for $2400 which was 20% discount off the retail price. I still have that watch and it is my daily driver most of the time.

Marc, you omitted one other major strategy Rolex uses. Rolex carefully integrates their lines of watches in such a way that as a customer progresses along the ladder of status and wealth, he aspires to collect Rolexes to confirm to other gents collecting Rolexes that he is worthy of residing in their class. For example, when you are a young man you might buy a black steel Submariner. But by the time you have graduated from the working class and now live off of your company or your investments, you will want to show it by getting a Smurf Submariner, or whatever you think is your equivalent. This lets the ladies know you are no longer a member of the working class. This is the Patek marketing as well, but Rolex dips into the working class market as a way to funnel you into their higher priced models, whereas Patek is oriented towards skipping the working class altogether. With a Rolex you are putting yourself on view to the working class, whereas with a Patek you are putting yourself on view only to the wealthy. That is why a three watch collection showing extreme success built from the ground up, for example, would be a steel sports Rolex, a gold Rolex, and then finally, a Patek of some significance. This is why a black Submariner is a perfect starter Rolex, because it is fit for purpose and fit for status both at the same time.

I got pissed at an AD I go into a lot. I said “10 months! Sell me a watch, man! I love the watches!” He walked in back and came put with a date just 41 on jubilee with a rhodium dial. He gave me a book and a catalog too, and explained he gets 2 watches a month and Rolex doesn’t let them pick. True or not, that was from the lips 👄 of the owner. It’s a small AD.

Spot on the cache that transcends watch enthusiast circles and that’s the reason it’s not my first choice. I don’t want a watch that everybody recognizes. I guess that’s kind of a snobby attitude too LOL I think it’s cool when you get a nod from another watch enthusiast. I once told a UPS driver how cool his Tudor Pelagos was and he was so happy and very surprised that somebody recognized the watch.

Do they even love cash? Don’t they have to report cash sales of 10K or more? I always write a check to save my AD their credit card merchant fee. That probably saves them a few hundred on a Rolex.

Another note, Patek does the same as Rolex in store strategy. When together, Usually on one side you have a large Rolex area green all bright full of people, and on the other a large dark conservative area all brown with one or two consultation desks, then in between all the other brands Tag, Omega, Breitling.

Rolex win at marketing. Ask non watch enthusiasts, of any background, and they can name Rolex. Are they great at watch complications? Not really. But are they incredibly good at what they do? Absolutely. They also sit in a sweet spot for price. Eight thousand dollars is a lot of money, but with a bonus, modest inheritance, attainable for many people. So most recognised luxury, and within reach maybe. Patek Phillipe is rarer, high complications, impeccably finished. But nowhere near as well known, as available in shops, or as attainable by price. And non watch enthusiasts are either priced out, or not excited buying a watch their friends wouldn't recognise.

I did my 3 weeks in a jewellery store and wasn’t for me. Every now and than they would do flash sales and 3 places would always do like mil insales, because all the bikies and crims would run in to buy jewellery for their wifes and hoes. Point being Rolex, sell a lot of their watches to crims esp at those criminal prices they charge, so why would you police it? We already have Paul Thorpe doing all the policing

No disrespect sir I don’t understand the hit piece on Rolex. I just look around your surroundings and question how many high-end watches you actually own. I’ve had Rolex is for the better part of 50 years and they are phenomenal time pieces. If you don’t wanna buy a Rolex don’t buy a Rolex go buy a Chinese piece of shit that everybody’s peddling. Opinions are opinions but my Rolexes have never let me down.
