How do you decide what poems to keep back only for submission to prestigious publications and which poems you can share online in order to build an audience? Both seem important.
@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, this answer will change depending on who you ask. And its attributed to a number of things: writing philosophy, submitting philosophy, overall writing plan, no plan, etc etc etc The short answer is that both are important. Another rule of thumb is to keep your best poems at your wayside to submit to the prizes and prestigious journals. Ones that are just as good but that don't have that glimmer of your best poems can go to other journals. My personal experience about this same question is still leading me to inconclusive results, no matter how many poets I speak to on the subject. Here is a bit of the conversation: "Though there are those prestigious journals out there publishing work for 40+ years and charging $10 for a quarterly magazine, who's actually buying those besides the writers in the journals and those who are in earshot of knowing the magazine? Well, if we look at the glass half full, the total number of poetry readers in America has rose significantly so maybe those will be magazine readers as well." The otherside, "Even if the readership is growing, print is a dying business. Look at all of these journals stopping their print runs and going online. Also, a poet's work can be easily found with just a quick google search if the work is published on the web." Of course, there is more to the conversation and these are just my projections :) Lately, I've been fond of online publishing because I like to show people my work (my last 3 pubs have been in print and its a bit of a drag.) Let it be known as well, you can build an audience either way. There needs to be more to the equation than publishing in order to gain a great audience. An online publication just helps you improve your "poet's resume," but poets that publish in print often post pictures of their pages on social media. In my 6 reasons to publish video I speak a bit more about publishing being your "resume/cv." And I would say a decent blend of both print and online work is acceptable. -- excuse the long winded response!

Hi Dimitri! Thanks for another great video! I read my poems pretty consistently at the end of my online yoga classes now, and then I include the text in the vlog for the class. I never really considered that a publication before. I love the 8.5x11 sheet into a zine concept. I am totally going to do that. Still working up the courage to reach out for an official publication! Thanks for helping us with all aspects of our poetry! I appreciate your teachings! With gratitude, Melissa

Melissa, hi! No problem, that's an interesting way to end your yoga classes, it must form a connection on a spiritual level after raising one's vibrations during the session. I checked out your page, 39,844 subscribers! MY GOODNESS! I need to thank YOU for watching ME! lol My partner practices yoga at home. We will be looking into some of your (BEGINNER) videos together XD And yes, sadly, that is considered a publication. The zine is an excellent idea and I encourage you to do so for your clients! They're even better when they fit some sort of theme, and if you are giving them out on the basis of healing I think that's an excellent use. There are ways around this publishing clause, like if what you put out on your youtube channel was an "earlier draft" or "unfinished." Then if you edit the poem some more THAT is considered the finished product. But those particulars are muddy and could change from editor to editor. A lot of these stipulations for literature are ambiguous and fickle so I'd rather just tell individuals to play it safe and write another poem. lol I appreciate you reading my material. I am glad that it served you. Positive vibrations, Dimitri

Seasonal Symbiosis Summer heat of the day, A bummer to me but my plants all will say; “This is great, what a life! While I’m burnt to crisp, From tending to their every wanton wish. I smile cause I know what I’ll reap in the end, All the while weary and sweaty taking care of my friends. I need them to thrive, they need the sun, So I put up with the heat, then along I will run, On my feet till I meet the rivers edge, For the ladies I love there’s nothing can wedge me from them. Unconditional love is a hard thing to find, Fundamental, spiritual neutrinos will bind, Symbiotic it is, fruitful for both, We rely on each other more than most. Without me they would die, Without them so would I, So I try to make friends with the sun, It can destroy or give life, I vote for the latter, So I love the sun no matter. Matthew Miller

Wow it just seems so complicated doesn't it? I have been prodded by the Universe to get my poetry out there and I've gotten together a pretty good collection that represent my best . I just don't have a lot of confidence in how to go àbout it as in first steps and such. Some of my work was dropped from the air into my pen and those are the best ones! So something out there wants other people to read this content but I really need a mentor if your interested lol. To give a small example,this is a smidge of the first one that came through my pen lol........Title is Shhhh.... To the chattering voices of my cluttered mind, peace and quiet are but a crime, so I'll fill my head with verse and rhyme to drown them out and buy some time.... That was the first on and it came to me 20 years ago. Since then I've gotten a lot more that have come to me in this way. I'd really appreciate any advice or time you have to mentor if your interested! That was only a portion of that poem btw I have so much more!

I like the idea of the zines. I didn't know people actually do that. I could have done that back in college. 😅 do you think if i try to sell it (since ink and paper have some cost) people will buy it? How do you price your self published work?
@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 6 жыл бұрын
Zines are a great idea. I'm about to make some myself. Many poets go this route, either before a chapbook or book or they ALWAYS just hand-make them. Poet Sandra Garcia Rivera (who I interviewed on my channel) makes really nice books and has charged $1 per poem in the past. The book can be as simple as stapling some pages of work together and you can charge anywhere from $1-$7 but i've seen some that were $10-$12. It's dependent on the quality as well as many other things. The conversation of what to price the book can get a bit complicated based on the poet, area, and venue, and we can discuss that further if you'd like. And LOL to the college comment! Yes! I remember printing just about whatever I could before graduation.

Hello, Dimitri! I am an aspiring poet. I have written more than 35 poems, most of them are almost 2 pages long. Some of them are the normal Shakespearean Sonnets and some are my own artist yet somewhat poetic creations. I only want to ask you three questions which are really important to me: 1) How many poems are there in a poetry book and how long is a poetry book? 2) Which is a good or per se promising website for me (who doesn't know much about publishing a poem) to publish my poem on and to get some bucks out of it? 3) In a poetry book need all the poems be about the same topic/subjects? (For eg. If I have written a poem based on melancholy and the other one is based on happiness, so here, the poems are somehow connected but are of different generas. Is it acceptable in the same poetry book?) If you could solve these questions that am having for the time being, I will with all my heart appreciate it!😊❤️

Hi! These are the kind of questions that would work best if I was working with you one on one. I'll drop my services link here but then I'll give you some quick answers: www.dimitrireyespoet.com/services/ 1) A poetry book can be a bunch of different sizes. This is the blog that will help you the best for that www.dimitrireyespoet.com/7-ways-to-publish-poetry/ 2) That's tough to say. You'd have to do some digging based on the themes of your work and how much time you want to put in. The blog from #1 talks about it a little a bit. This KZbin video about making a Submittable account will help to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/honSqqt7hdemjc0 3) The short answer-- yes! Different themes can be in a book and they'll start creating a story with each other but it can get complicated. You have to ask yourself if it is telling a solid story. Happy writing!

Yeah, Dryland is awesome. I also think on their website somewhere they have a list of other magazines that are similar to them. If you find that you like what they are producing that'd be worth reading into. When I first started out that's how I started developing a sense for the various publications out there. And yeap, posting poems on any social media site counts. When looking at the submission guidelines for many places they vaguely mention "no previously published material" and that is usually ANYTHING that has been seen online. It's a lot of research but it gets easier and less intimidating with time. Trust the process! I have many things in the works, including something with that artist book. When I have an update on that so will everyone in this community. Please do check out my work though! I have links in my description!

Now that I have more time to reflect on life and purpose, I wrote at least 17OO narratives and short poems within the last three years. Yet, I remain clueless about the process of self-publishing vs. traditional publication due to my volume of work. And the subjects range from various emotions to life lessons. So I am seeking advice on where to begin beyond the organization. Please help.

Peace Anissha! Thanks for writing and sharing your thoughts. WOW, 1700 narratives and short poems in 3 years!?!? What am I doing?!?!! lol that's a lot of work and then on top of that, sifting through self-publishing vs. traditional publishing can be confusing as well. It's difficult to determine what the best steps are in terms of where you should begin as there are a lot of factors involved ie, your location, access to venues, the content and style of your work, your familiarity with book publishing, time frame for publishing, time to invest in putting together a book, etc etc etc. These are the types of questions that can be sifted through in a consultation call. Hi Dimitri! Excellent video; you're a natural! Learned a few things, and I always like learning. :) I do have a question though, prompted by seeing a blackout poem in one of your video clips. I have recently begun playing around with erasure poetry, actually. I've done a few with poems by Dylan Thomas and Winnifred Letts. So I'm wondering if you could answer a few of my questions or point me, perhaps, to another video by you or someone else who might have the info I'm looking for. 1. When creating erasure poetry, should I altogether avoid using works by poets after 1923 (or whatever that copyright date is), just to be on the safe side? 2. Do you know of any poetry publications/reviews that especially embrace erasure and blackout poetry submissions? For background info, I usually position the Poet's poem (ex: Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night) on one page followed by my whittled down poem on the opposite page, while also visually re-formatting . . . so sort of like erasure. But I'm not sure how I could publish these, either professionally or via social media (or what not) without infringing upon copyright. Any advice you have is most welcome! :)
@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, nice YT handle. I appreciate the praise and feedback. It makes me know that I'm doing a good job. So cool how you are emmersing yourself in erasure. here are the answer to your questions: 1) You can for sure use poets AFTER 1923 as long as you give credit to the poet (you should always be giving credit to the poet's work you are borrowing from regardless.) I'd actually suggest it because you could possibly be limiting yourself. If Thomas and Letts are part of a certain topic or something you're writing into, that's fine, if not feel free to explore. 2) Presses will probably appreciate erasure poems. They're pretty fresh in comparison to everything else the editors will be getting. While some presses might have a call for blackout or erasure poetry, some presses who will have their interests particularly piqued are journals that are into "experimental" work. If you have a submittable account. Type in the keywords "experimental" and "poetry" in the discover tab's search bar. To add to this, your better bet is to concentrate on the themes of which you are writing into rather than the erasure form-- when editors are putting together an issue, themes will be considered before form for the most part. Lastly, this comment can change from poem to poem, but if it is a generally known poem like "Do Not Go Gentle" the original poem isn't necessarily needed. Just a short phrase under the title that says something along the lines of "after Dylan Thomas. That should be enough to avoid infringement. As for publishing online or professionally, this answer is on a by and by basis.

@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Emma. The latter part of this question is funny because honestly: I’m always rethinking of poems, even wen they’re sitting and waiting for review, even when they’re accepted, even when they are already published an online or in a magazine 😂 it’s the writer’s dilemma: the work is just never done. I usually tell people I try to have my submissions page up to about 30 active submissions at a time. With that, maybe 1 or 2 things get published from that pile. But it changes per every writer depending on what the writer is applying for. This is a conversation that changes from poet to poet and I think this is worth me making a video about. 🤔 I May have to ask my Patreon folks as well. Let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you! This is all very helpful - I'm quite new to the poetry business and have been publishing under a pen name. I've been sending to around 10 publications, and out of those maybe 3 to 4 poems get selected. It seems, at least for me, that publishers will pick one or two poems out of the handful that I send them. I have two related questions. First, do you think, for new writers at least, it's worth publishing under publications that have a higher acceptance rate (30-50% acceptance) just to build some stuff to write in the 'short bio' that more established publications seem to want? Second, should one attempt to build a reputation for a certain type of poetry (e.g. free verse, confessional poetry) or go for an eclectic style and see what sticks?
@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 6 жыл бұрын
@@emmang6559 Nice! That's a pretty high probability! In reality, your bio should include maybe 2-4 examples of places you published in-- if not, some writers will have a very long list and it seems a bit show-offy. People usually say "___, ____, ___, and many others." And I would definitely do the eclectic. Experiment! The goal is to ALWAYS be a student because we get better with every poem. I think you'd really benefit from our developing Patreon community! I'm interested in seeing what you come up with and you seem like you are already on the right track!

Usually, if you self publish, you'll have to put an "All Rights Reserved" paragraph somewhere in the beginning of the book to protect your work from being lifted by others.

ps. Just saw your comment toward the end of the video about finding a good poetry anthology outside of the US. One of my favorites if this recommendation helps at all: A Book of Luminous Things edited by Czeslaw Milosz. It offers a great mixture of poets from around the world. It's full of gems. :)

My poetry deals a lot with spiritually, being an anti-conformist, and my poetry has a lot of vulgarity in it. What’s a good magazine for this type of poetry?

I'm not sure as there are a lot of other factors that go into a poem like content, form, and other tropes within it. But you sure should be thinking about going the indie route in terms of publishers. Sign up for submittable and explore their discover section. Also, I'm following several magazines on my instagram. Look at my "following" tab to explore some publishers.

Hi Ryan, pleasure to be talking to you. In the poetry world, it's totally okay to use whatever you please. I have friends who use pseudonyms and stage names. Politically, many poetry organizations will honor whatever name you give them and if not, you don't need to be publishing there. If it's just a self- induced stress or societal stressor, message me on facebook, instagram, or my email which you can find on my website. I'm terribly sorry for getting back to you so late-- I am not at all brushing any of the comments you or anyone else has sent me. I've just had a lot on my plate. Hope to hear from you soon. Congrats on getting that much closer to graduation. Cheers. Dimitri

I tend to write short poems, is that okay, Ive noticed you write really long poems
@DimitriReyesPoet
@DimitriReyesPoet 5 жыл бұрын
Any type of poem is fine, but it depends on what you are looking to do with them. Some publications prefer shorter works, some prefer longer works, and others don't care about the length, just the content. I guess the question to ask yourself is, "Do I feel like the poem is done?" This question and a few others will get you on the right track.

what does “ publishing” mean though? does it just mean posting something? don’t u need to copyright it though so no one can copy it ? this is all way too much of a hassle

Hi Catherine, "publishing" basically means "Has THIS piece of writing appeared in public ANYWHERE else?" Copyrighting is such a large issue. Technically, copyrighting your work is basically putting your name at the bottom of a post or in the picture of your work but people can still steal these things and taking it to court isn't really worth it unless you have a ginormous following (and even at that point, your fans will know who really wrote it.) That's the reason why its better to publish under publishers and communities that put this work out. They have a bigger following or they're at least branded and will do what is necessary to have what is called "first serial rights." That may sound like THEY have the rights over YOUR work which is true-- but its less of a bigger deal than it is unless you are one of those hardcore artists that want one hundred and ten percent creative control over your material. And it doesn't mean that you still don't own the material, its just that they put it out first, you're still aloud to claim it, but by them having first SERIAL rights this means that they published it first and the publisher just wants you to mention them if you talk about it. Rights also revert back to you eventually, and depending in what the contract or terms are its around 3-6 months, sometimes up to a year, depending on when the press's next issue comes out. Any follow up questions? I want to make sure you leave this comment section with what you were looking for. You can also DM me through Facebook Messenger or Instagram. My links are in my banner and description.

Hi, I am an Ameican living in Israel. I have been writing in my journals spiritual Christian poems. (or psalms) I have dyslexia which has caused me to be a bit apprehensive about publishing. But recently I felt led to start a blog and have been getting some good feedback which has caused me to be interested in self-publishing my poems on Amazon. My new blog is poetofdreams.com I just started it this last month so still in the process of uploading all my poetry. Your blog got me to think about whether I should put them up on the website if I want to self publish them in a book? I have so many questions. I know that my poetry probably will probably mainly interest Christian women. But maybe it might reach out to more. I would love to hear your feedback.
