In before the "it's a fat pig so it can't be a real M car" whining. My (I'm sure, unpopular) opinion is that if BMW is capable of mostly masking the weight through suspension tuning all while making it faster, I'm fine with it. The good ol' days weren't always as great as people seem to remember they were. The fact that they are still putting a V8 in it while giving you the option to put around in EV-mode to keep from heat cycling the engine and save some $$ on fuel is a lot better than what they could have done. Regulation are getting more and more restrictive, and they are dealing with it the best way that they could.

There are over 350 of these on lots in the USA that are not sold. Every previous M5 before this was selling for over sticker fresh off release. This tells you all you need to know. This M5 will end up like the XM which it is based on. 😂.

@@gaara4667 in the days of Chevrolet selling two high rpm race engines in the z06 and zr1 - bmw is using a detuned truck engine with hybrid drivetrain in their M5. 🤣. Go buy a 2025 M8 grancoupe it’s the last M car with a true V8

Most useful and balanced review I have see so far, and you clearly articulate what this car is and what it is not. I've had an I5 M60 for about 6 months now and I have adjusted to the G60 platform after being in a G30 for 7 years. Yes it is big, and yes it is heavy, but the chassis is brilliant and the visual design - inside and out - is (slowly) growing on me. We also have an X5 50e, and I have come to love that PHEV powertrain. My partner rarely fires the ICE in her daily driving, and the B58 is there when I want it. Had this M5 been available at the time, I would have gotten it in a heartbeat -- blisteringly fast in a straight line, capable enough in the corners, perfect velvet hammer highway cruiser, 40+ miles of pure EV range at 70+ MPH. If I want a track car, I am not getting a 5er to begin with. It's time to accept that we are living through a transitional phase in the auto industry, and things simply aren't going to be what they once were -- and that's not an entirely bad thing, despite the endless whining.

I’ve actually come from liking to loving this car. It’s different from most of the other cars in its section and usable every day. The over used weight jokes were funny at first but since there has been more detailed videos released like your own, I just stroll past them now and don’t give them a second look. I’m sure BMW knows that it will be a very successful car for them. I actually surprised that you were able to find a dealer car to use in your video and it wasn’t already sold. I enjoyed the video 👍🏽

If they had done a turbo straight 6 without hybrid ( M3 engine ) and stripped the weight down to under 4000 lbs. everyone would have still complained. Drive it before you hate it. One cool thing is the you can sneak out of the neighborhood in electric mode. Neighbors hate your 6am aftermarket exhaust start up.

Awesome review! You're very balanced and thoughtful in your comments - I appreciate that. I've just ordered the M5 Touring in Vegas red. I've had nine BMWs, including an M2, M3 (E93) and M4. My daily driver is an X5 50e, and I love it. As soon as I heard the Touring was coming to the US I ordered it. I use it exactly as you said. I don't do track days (would love to try!), and for the most part I want a fun, competent car that looks hot and is amazing to drive. Great point about the air suspension tho. My X5 hybrid has that and it makes a huge difference. Driving in hybrid mode is a lot of fun...but the world needs better batteries. Til then, I'll have a 4.4 V8 as a backup!

Thank you for bringing up the target market for this car. As someone who's more of a fan of the smaller, more nimble cars. I'd be the target audience for the 4 series line up and lower. I love me an M5, but I'm not the target audience. Your business executives or family oriented groups are the target audience. My step dad has the G30 5 series and had the F10 before. My biological father also mainly had the 5 series models or higher, but currently has an F83 M4. You can see it's basically the older more reversed people who want your higher end series. Which is funny, because even the non "M" versions of some of those are more powerful than the M2 - M4 😂. Either way the people who are complaining should basically stop, because they are clearly not the target audience for this car.

Weights the same as my F95. I dont care about full hybrid. Give me a non plug in mild hybrid like the eRay which is lighter and does aid performance or give me full electric "Plaid like" with other 1000HP.

What’s bad about it? It’s bmw. They can engineer anything that’s heavy to drive a lot smaller Am m5 weighs more than a charger hellcat yet the bmw handles better. An x7 is heavier than a durango yet it handles better than that dodge

I don't like those new Chinese BMWs (all new BMWs are built for Chinese customers taste first and foremost, because it is their biggest market). I would personally like less "mood" interior lights, less piano black, and more quality leather inside with stitching, because this interior looks and feels way too gaudy and cheap for the price.

I'm pretty sure it's a great car to drive.. but everyone who's been reviewing this unit is almost overcompensating for the lackluster engineering choices. In a straight line you can make anything fast. It's the dancing in and out corners that people that like sport cars enjoy the most. I'm not the kind of person who would buy a 5 series..I think they're too big and ungraceful when compared to the compact sedans. Just like I wouldn't touch the panamera when I can get the 911 or 992.. But that aside, I know reviewers must pander to the companies or never get units to review when they launch. But let's just call this M5 a terrible product. Sure they can mask the weight, make it a bullet in a straight line. And I'm sure it's great to drive.. but the folks at BMW realized they had a lot of hardware left from the XM's failure. And decided to slap it on this car. The best and most honest review of this car is from Rory of Autotrader. It is a heavy car, you'll feel it. An SUV in a sedan body. It's not confident on corners. I wish they had improved on the shortcomings of the XM and not just copy paste the platform onto the M5. I wanted to love it so much, but what the hell was that BMW?

Also there is NO reason why the new M5 and ALL the M8's to have massage seats. at those price points they all must have massage seats. Reason why I got an F95 X5M Comp instead of the M8GC because at that price point Bowers & Wilkins, pano roof and massage seats are a must. Only thing they have is the B&W but missing Pano n massage seats

It DOES NOT compares to the RS7 and AMG GT 63 S. those are the direct competition to the M8 Gran Coupe, not the M5. M5 is the competition to the E63
