These commercials aired on NBC on July 22nd, 1978
1. Nestle Quik
2. Froot Loops
3. McDonald's
4. Nestle $100,000 Bar (Pretty sure the girl at 2:06 is Dana Plato)
5. Cap'n Crunch
6. TV Spot for "Star Wars" (Promoting the 1978 theatrical re-release. Interesting that even back then they had a marketing campaign with trailers featuring specific characters)
7. Cheerios (Bike Stickers!)
8. Franken Berry/Count Chocula Cereal (With free Monster Door Knocker)
9. "Land Of The Lost" End Credits
10. McDonald's
11. Promo for "Lawrence Welk"
12. NBC Fun Machine Bumper
13. Sugar Smacks
14. 3 Musketeers (I miss the old logo used here)
15. Crazy Cow
16. Trix
17. Girls Clubs Of America PSA (This features characters from the largely forgotten cartoon "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids", which is essentially every Hanna-Barbera cartoon put into a blender: • Theme Song | Butch Cas... )
18. Mego Micronauts Collection (These were licensed from Takara's "Microman" line of toys in Japan)
19. Fritos
20. "Thunder" Commercial Bumper
21. Burger King (Terrifying in every aspect)
22. Frosted Flakes (The whole "secret formula" thing is so bizarre. It's sugar!)
23. "Thunder" End Credits (Someone at the network missed whatever button they were supposed to press and played the voiceover here too late, hence the black screen)
24. NBC Junior Hall Of Fame (Haven’t been able to find any information about what happened to this kid)
25. McDonald's (With McDonaldland Happy Cups)
26. Promo for "Wild World Of Animals"
27. Bugs Bunny & Friends Intro Title Card (After this the person who recorded this changed the channel over to CBS to the amazing show "The Secrets of Isis": • The Secrets of Isis In... , but unfortunately no commercials were recorded there. Then they went back over to NBC)
28. Bryant Gumbel with an afro reads Baseball scores over Disco music (Obviously not a commercial but I had to include this! The awesome music used here is "K-Jee" by M.F.S.B. which was famously heard in the dance-off finale of "Saturday Night Fever" and also appeared on its soundtrack album: • MFSB - K-Jee - Saturda... )
29. Aqua Velva Aqua Cologne (With Steve Garvey)
30. Radio Shack (With Paul Burke)
31. Miller Lite (With Rodney Dangerfield and Jerry Parent)

I had just turned 1 when these commercials aired, so I obviously don't remember these, but they create a very certain time and era. The commercials of the 70s and 80s were just more soothing than the commercials you saw in the 90s, or certainly today. It really is amazing how advertising reflects the mood of the time. Even the cartoon commercials peddling sugar cereal to kids don't seem that aggressive.

Definitely a lot less “X-Treme” or “In Your Face!” Attitudes than the commercials I grew up with as a kid in the 90s / beginning of the 2000s

Man. Say what you will about McDonalds food, but their 70-80s commercials are so endearing. Its shows how McDonalds was part of our lives as a teenager and sometimes that's the place that everything came together.

I was 7 years old when these spots aired, so this is the period (as opposed to late 80's/90's) when I can really identify with the "kiddie" commercials. There are some real classics (including some "grown-up" ads) here! 0:00--I love all the Nestle Quik commercials with the bunny and his eternal (and unsuccessful) quest to drink Quik slowly. 0:30--"Follow your nose! It always knows!" I never cared for Froot Loops, but I loved the commercials. 1:00, 5:03, and 12:21--McDonald's has had a lot of great commercials over the years, and here are 3 of them. 2:00--I love the jingle for the $100,000 Bar. It was later rebranded as "100 Grand," so they unfortunately wouldn't be able to revive this jingle in a new commercial. 3:00--Back when the first Star Wars movie was just "Star Wars," and not "Episode IV: A New Hope." 3:30--I love the Cheerios commercials with the animated chalk drawings. 5:33--Yes, Lawrence Welk was on network TV back then. PBS is still airing reruns. 5:46--"Dig 'em!" "Knee-deep!" I love the frog mascot for Sugar Smacks. 6:15--Great jingle for 3 Musketeers--and I agree about the classic logo. 8:40--This classic Fritos jingle is based on an old pop song called "The Aba Daba Honeymoon." 9:50--"They're GRRREAT!" --thanks to Tony the Tiger's "secret formula." 15:39--"Everything you always wanted in a beer--and less." Kind of funny how I seem to remember all the beer commercials from this period, as young as I was.

This was just before WRTV became an ABC affiliate because that was ABC's peak time. That Fritos bag is so different from nowadays. Crazy Cow seems a bit silly if only because most chocolate cereals will eventually turn the milk chocolate.

If this is from the first day of the ad campaign for the 1978 release, it seemed that at least twice an hour on NBC that day had a character specific Star Wars ad. After the first few, I set up an audio cassette recorder next to the little portable black and white in my bedroom and spent the rest of the day and evening sitting with my finger hovering over the record button.

As for the Bugs Bunny & Friends title card as far as I know NBC never carried a Looney Tunes series on Saturday morning, only CBS & ABC did. That was more than likely a syndicated offering, according to a 1977-1978 Saturday morning schedule I found Thunder was the final show NBC would have every week, then they switched to CBS which had SatAM programming until 1:30-2pm then they switched back to NBC's baseball coverage (what a find that was!)

Actually they did. The following summer NBC premiered The Daffy Duck Show (later The Daffy/Seedy Show) which ran thru '79-'82. Although some classic were shown much of stuff consisted of crummy DFE Daffy/Speedy shorts from the '60s. NBC also showed two Daffy specials during 1980's Easter and Halloween era.

Froot Loops- "You're a funny looking chicken!" Well, your artist must've fell asleep at the drawing board when they created your design, Mole. Frosted Flakes- With the chemicals and additives they add in cereal over the years, I would think Frosted Flakes would definitely qualify for having a secret formula. Monster Cereals- The free door knocker has got to the cheapest looking one I've ever seen. I would imagine it would make very little knocking noises at all on the door.

I have an audio cassette recording of this Star Wars tv spot. I assumed the fluctuating quality was because of my tape, but this is the 3rd time (at least) that I've seen this particular spot with the same bad quality audio from 7/22/78. Interesting.
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 3 жыл бұрын
It seems like the EQ was fluctuating, causing a loss of volume and information in the highs, making it sound muffled at times. I assumed it was a problem with the tape, but if your personal audio cassette recording has the same issue then I guess it was a technical glitch going on at the network that day.
@timothysprengeler4071
@timothysprengeler4071 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed also that the quality of the audio was inconsistent. I wasn't sure if it was a flaw in the tape, or if I was having speaker issues. It doesn't really bother me, though; I'm just tickled to see these classic commercials again!

I happen to have just watched "The Toys That Made Us" for the second time (on Blu-ray, in case you wanna know). That _8-part documentary series about the toys that we all know_ included the one with the Transformers, which mentioned "Me-cro-a Man" (as it was sung in Japanese). I remembered seeing the Micronauts back in the day (as well as the Mego brand), but didn't know they were originally from Japan.
