So our older son joined my wife and I in a Mother's Day Edition game of Scrabble. Late in the game, she was well in the lead. With only 3 letters left, she said "The only word I could make is 'coo', but I can't see where to put it". Our son beamed and placed his last letters on the board, spelling the word "coup", with a triple word score to boot. He got 30 points or something, and leapt out in front of my wife by a few points, *literally* pulling off a coup. It was cuckoo, or should I say coo-coup. Just one of those language coincidences that brings a smile.

Got to see The Immediate Family on the Rock Legends cruise in Feb. Terrifyingly good. Fun story: I was playing drums with another band on the cruise, and me and the guitar player went down to sign up for the Saturday night jam. We walk into the green room and to my left, sitting against the wall, I see Lee, Russ Kunkel, Kootch and Waddy. Ten seconds later Nancy Wilson walks in and they all migrate to the back of the room to go over the Tom Petty songs they were going to play. I smiled at my guitar player and said said "Dude, we got no shot." The organizer came up to us and confirmed that the jam night dance card was front-loaded with superstars, so we happily went back up to find our wives and continued enjoying ourselves. 5000 albums worth of talent in the room? That jam night will do just fine without us.

I had a guy invite me to sit in on a club gig he was doing....playing guitar. I was using his equipment for a set. I got off the stage and he said " Man that sounded good....what did you do?". I said..." I turned all your effects off cause I didn't know how to run them for leads and rythms......". Of course he was shocked. The old adage is really true.....most times...less is more.

The Excitable Boy album came out when I was in University,. There are several really memorable songs on it, like L,G & M, Roland..., Excitable Boy. "Werewolves of London", became the raging song (university days, remember) and I recall howling it with buddies in alleyways outside clubs during a break, at pubs at the school, on streets going home at 2am. I was thrilled when Warren Zevon was befriended by David Letterman and would speak so honestly and thoughtfully on the show. Will never forget the night he mentioned to Dave that he was sick and it was terminal. I am only a fan, but it was gut-wrenching. Gone way too soon, agreed. Thanks again for the stories!

Just as I thought I couldn’t love Leland more as a novice bass player... he makes me smile and feel better for being a woman too. I was told back in the early 80s aged 14 that I couldn’t learn bass at school as “it was for the boys”... So I didn’t learn and only picked it up about 30 Years later. God I wish I had ignored that teacher, or known about Carole Kaye, Tina Weymouth, Kim Deal, Gail Ann Dorsey and others back then. But anyway. Least I’ve started now and love it despite wondering ‘what if...’ So thanks Leland, for the shout out to moms/mums, women with no kids, and the bass players who find you as inspirational as our female bass idols.

Always speaking with even tempered wisdom. It's funny, you reminded me something that I believe Ray Brown said:" When you're starting out, you're on the quest for the ultimate set of strings in pursuit of The Tone, but eventually you just get a set of helicores, and then you learn how to actually PLAY the instrument." That said, a TC chorus is pretty awesome in the right context.

Every time I hear you Lee naming all the great (LA) studio players names, I wish more people remembered and talked about Russ Kunkel. He was such a songwriters drummer and it saddens me that time is forgetting him. Maybe with all those other greats in the LA scene, Blaine, Keltner, Vega, et. al, Russ is just a little lost in the, ahem, shuffle.

I've been playing for fifty-four years and finally had to pick up a 5-string about fifteen years ago. Learning how to use it *appropriately* was a bit of a 'journey.' You are, of course, absolutely correct: The song drives everything, and you can easily become a distraction rather than enhancing a song. Properly placed, though, the 5-string can be a powerful tool. .....and, asking Lee Sklar to play 'Rush' is like asking Pablo Picasso to draw a circuit schematic! It could be done, but...why?? (BTW, Lawyers, Guns and Money is one of my personal favorites of all time.....thanks for that, and all of your other very cool bass lines!)

I remember reading an article years ago about the difference in guitars and the sound. They took a number of top engineers and played them guitar licks by different players with different guitars. None of the engineers were able to tell which guitar was which but they got all of the players right. For the most part I think a good player can make almost any instrument sound good.

Warren is just that level of songwriter that is up there in a manner that is indescribable. I grew up as a kid just knowing him from "Werewolves of London" and hearing that on the radio. When I got to college and started making friends there, I ran into friends who were avid music lovers....and that was when I was more thoroughly introduced his music. He just has a unique way of telling a story or speaking his mind....and he was right in there with Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, etc.

From a sound guy...and for MOST sound guys: Thanks for bringing one bass. Regarding heart and hands I have a couple of supporting anecdotes...not that you need my support but they are fairly instructive. NAMM 2000 or so, still temporarily in L.A. I heard someone really nailing the phrasing in the intro to "Do You Feel Like I do". Turned to look...Peter sounding just like Peter but playing a high end Strat clone...Anderson maybe? It wasn't even black. About the same time Paul Roger's was touring. I got a call from a venue in Eureka CA. 600 capacity club. The Marshall JCM900 they borrowed from a fan blew up. I owned the local sound company and had a pretty comprehensive backline but no stacks or half stacks up there because the venues are too small. Howard Leese was the guitarist. Uncommon knowledge...Howard is a very skilled engineer. Anyway, he looked at my list of mostly high end boutique combo amps and chose a Fender Blues DeVille which is decidedly NOT a high end boutique combo amp and most certainly not a JCM 900. There came a point where Paul showcased the three guys...I think Tony Franklin was on Bass. Embarrassed to forget the drummer but he had toured with Alice Cooper. Anyway...when Howard played Barracuda it sounded remarkably like the guy on the album in spite of the cheap and tiny Fender. Thanks for your wisdom and thanks for showcasing a wonderful artist and songwriter. Sorry for the ramble. I am old now and fortunate to mostly dribble just words. Cheers!

The beauty and genius of Leland Sklar comes across so wonderfully in both his verbal intro to this song and in the song itself. He is one of the few bass guitarists that really pricked up my ears as to how important the bass in music is. He creates the bass groove beautifully. Simple where it needs to be - but he has the chops to create those incredible fills (like a drummer) but melodically. I Love this guy.

I have a home made 4 string bass that I knocked up from scratch, fretless without a truss rod, 35 years ago with BEAD strings and a short length of cycle inner tube folded over itself (to fit above and below the Fender bridge block screws) under the strings by the bridge. It sounds soooo good, deep and thumpy! Loving your videos Lee you are my lockdown treat. Thanks!

I enjoy hearing how you feel about gear, so many gear nuts with big guitar or bass collections, I have the same philosophy as you, I own one electric and one acoustic and I’m happy. Warren should be in the Hall Of Fame. I know know the guys with the corporate clock too, it’s brutal. Thanks for these videos Leland, enjoy them a lot.

A "ONE STRING" Bass!!! Fantastic Mr. Sklar, well played sir! Well played! Simply use/play what is required by the music, song and band. Play what you're competent and comfortable with. Happy Memorial Day....

I got a 5 string because my band covers songs where I need the low Eb and I got tired of two basses- one downtuned and switching- Your comment “If I need to play one song with the Eb I just use the 5 string the whole time” made my day!!! I didn’t go from 4 to 5 to make a statement- I did it for the flexibility- if everything we played worked with a low E, I’d stick to 4!! Thank you Leland for vindicating me!!

I wish I could give this many thumbs up. I play a 5-string, but it's what I like. I wish I could play more often. Thank you so much for passing along this philosophy. No one thing is better than another. They all have their place and time when they can shine. WE all have our own place and time as well. Four-string/5-string, rock/country/hip-hop, black/white, liberal/conservative, they all have their place in this world. Diversity is what life is all about. Celebrate and enjoy it!

Good morning Leland! 🔥👊 I think Santana said something similar, the music is in you, the instrument is simply the tool in which I express it through! Simplicity takes a lifetime to learn! Have a great day Leland! 🙂🖕

Waddy sings really well. As Warren said on his last visit to the Letterman show; "You have to enjoy every sandwich." He was an amazing writer and performer and is dearly missed to us listeners. I can't imagine what you, who knew him personally, feel with his passing. Thank you, as always, for sharing.

Dear Lee: I'm a rubbish bass player, but I'm practicing, and I have good hope of getting better. So, I'm practicing this song and find myself looking up and saying "Hey - I'm playing along with Lee-frikkin' Sklar!!!! It was such a fun moment; I've seen you many time with Lyle Lovett and I have very much enjoyed your on-line presence. Many thanks.
