73 VW bus fuel tank removal

Thanks for the upload! The factory issued a technical bulletin in 1975 with instructions for an inspection hole and cover for access to the fuel tank sending unit. Is exactly what I will do on my '77 Westy. The gas fumes smell like I need to remove the tank and replace all the hoses and rubber connectors of the vent lines. I used POR15 to seal the tanks on my other vehicles, so ole Westy will get that treatment after a thorough cleaning. Your video comes in real handy to prepare that work, thanks a lot! I sure hope your bus is up and running in the meantime.

Thanks! Bout to start on my 73. Was a leak on floor so hopefully it is only fuel lines. Engine still in want to try and start it first Bill

Thank You!, I was pulling and prising the panel and gave up, then I saw your video and it was the 4 bolts of screws underneath and the access panel for the fuel pipe that I need to fix, then it pulls away, you have saved me a lot of time!

Cool video, like the music, I play mandolin, and guitar, when I lived in TN I played and like bluegrass and old fiddle tunes. My first bus was a 1978, had to pull the fuel tank and clean it, wow nasty gas and rust. I used Marine clean and acid it took forever, then the darn thing still would block up the fuel fuel lines and filter. I finally gave up, took it to a shop had it cleaned out, I did not want to screw up the fuel injectors, that year they put the 2000cc type-4 motors which was fuel injected. Lesson learned on that job and had stupid money in cleaning that tank. Looking forward to seeing your method..

Busman 54 I’m still working on the electrolysis project, haven’t gotten the results that I was expecting yet. There’s a couple of more thing to try before I call it a fail. Woof! Having to have the engine out to fix your gas gauge seems like a major design flaw! I'm working on my '72 and certainly appreciate the video! Good luck and I hope to see you out on the road

You could probably pull the tank without removing the engine but it would probably be easier to pull the engine first. At the very least you would have to remove the carb. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

I had someone comment on the gray borders on my videos. Why not wide screen. Well it’s because I’m still trying to learn how to do video editing. After I posted this video, I went back into editor and played around with it some. And figured out that the borders are caused by format selection. So hopefully I will remember that on the next one.

stevenwesley62 Thanks for the like and comment. I’m not sure what is causing the gray lines on the sides. I don’t know if it’s the editor I’m using or just something I haven’t figured out yet. Lol. But I will look into it before my next video.
