Leaks like that are due to “oh s-t seals.” You install the seal, it leaks, and then you say “oh s-t.” 🤣 These are to be expected with a job as involved as this. In a way it’s kind of a milestone! Everything is assembled and now it’s working out the kinks! It’s part of the fun of fixing up a classic car. Still remember how this bus looked when you first got it. It’s a work of art!!!👍🏻🤘🏻

Horsehair pads go under the tank to isolate the body and tank and stop chafing and potential holing of the tank, as well as under the straps. You should have found them when you removed the old tank. Bay window's have them glued to the tank in 'strategic points'. Split axle boots have the split facing to the rear of the vehicle. Placing the seam vertically. Puts stress and torsional (push pull forces) on the seam as the axle shaft moves up and down. Something they are not engineered for. This causes the boot to fail prematurely and leak. Also the seam is supposed to have a head of silicone sealant in it when assembled. Mega grey will stay sealed, but use the silicone of your choice. The best non setting sealer I have found comes from the UK and is called Blue Hylomar. Developed by Rolls Royce for use on Merlin engines during World War 2. Great for sealing case halves and paper gaskets too.

If you have access to a vibratory bowl with ceramic media. Put the gas cap in or and it will polish it for you. Ground strap looks fine. Yes add that permatex sealant you have to both sides of all the paper gaskets and the outside of the input shaft seal. You don’t need a lot, a very thin coating works best.

Hi CT, the marking VDO 21 18 15 62 is the parts number fot the fuel tank sending unit. VDO is a huge automotive parts manufacturer here in Germany and still exists. You can clean the fuel cap with fine steel wool and oil. That the old tank still looks so good is amazing. Nice progress 👍

Check the senders by doing an ohms check. Take a reading empty, fill them up with fuel and take another. Also check there are no dead spots as the slider moves from full to empty when you drain it. If they match I'd certainly put the old one back in. The axle boots need to be clocked so the seam is 45 degrees forward from the current upright position. This helps prevent the seam from splitting over time due to the axle movement.

Brass wire brushes are softer than steel - I wouldn't spend too long on it, a replacement is probably cheap.
@donaldprater50993 жыл бұрын
Good vid. About the clutch adjustment nut. You probably need to use the hex nut. If you look the hole in the lever is round while the wing nut is oval shaped. Later models had the wing nut but used an oval shaped hole that the nut would lock into so it wouldn't loosen so its possible that that wing nut could loosen. I'm pretty sure you need to use the hex nut with the lock nut.
@CTmoog3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Donald! I will do that.

Incredible how that fuel tank looks inside! Remember to put back the heat exchangers and bottom tin on the motor. Still not sure why Darrin didn’t install them the first time when you started it. From what I’ve seen with these cars, sometimes the condition of the original OEM parts will surprise you. More often that not you can get away with reconditioning them. Not only is their quality better than any replacements you can find nowadays but you save money in the process. Those transaxle seals are a bitch; that one on the wheel could be the axle seal. It’s always important to torque the axle nuts to spec too; the Torque Multiplier is great for that. For the boots they tell you to try to push them in as much as possible and that includes the outer end; the less stretched out they get installed the best. The orientation of the boot joints are recommended at at 2 pm on the right side and at 11 am on the left side. I bet you that transaxle works; they are bulletproof. 😉
