You have to see the movie. Not that it actually makes any sense. It’s a time travel, parallel universe kind of thing. The hanger backs up to a secure area in which a portal to the reverse time universe is. They need to get to the portal.

Small corrections, it is a 747-Classic, so the stair to the upper deck is correct. Also since the engines are running you would not be able to open the side door on the main deck. The Door is powered by the ground handling bus with is not available when engines are running.

I kind of doubt it was cheaper than CG unless it was scrap. "the average price for a pre-owned BOEING 747-400 is $16,000,000.00" plus cost of the building you're destroying, rigging up the pyro, fire and film crew, insurance, etc. There's no way just that crash would have cost more to do with CG or miniatures. Basically all you're saving is the cost of building 1 or 2 plane models and a model building. Everything else is the same but at much smaller scale and fewer crew. The rest could have been done by taxiing a rented aircraft or miniature and adding a few digital effects.
@DMSVICAU

It's definitely more fun crashing a real plane than using CGI! And when you think about it........they bought the plane for scrap value and sold it for scrap value.....so it probably cost them next to nothing to crash the plane.

Hey Kelsey, great video as always. I was surprised you didn’t talk about 2 things towards the end: 1. The seemingly disproportionate speed of the 747 compared to how much thrust he added. 2. That they seemed to just run behind the engines (and other people were behind the engines) without there seeming to be any thrust force.
@mikoto7693

I have more than a few things I don’t think could happen throughout those sequences. Because my role is confined to passenger planes I wasn’t paying much attention to the cargo modules because it wasn’t my stuff but I really don’t think those gold bars would be piled up with just a few straps because turbulence would probably fling the gold bars all over the cargo hold and potentially damage the plane or ruin the balance. Not to mention all the labelling and whatnot and that’s really complicated. The other problem is that once those engines fired up and the plane is moving forward that tree, those cars and whatnot would get sucked into the engines and wreck them. I’m not convinced the tug would ever detach from a plane in motion because it’s probably dangerous. And those little carts behind the plane at the start probably wouldn’t be there because behind the engines is probably as dangerous as being in front of them. But the biggest problem I saw? Well maybe the movie is taking place in the US and they might have different rules but neither of those guys are wearing the security ID badge/passes that everyone who works airside MUST have and wear visibly for all to see. Even if they were wearing properly uniform and PPE, they shouldn’t get ten feet before someone is challenging them and demanding to see their security ID that has the bearer’s picture on it. Failure to present it will get security sicced on them. All employees who work airside are expected to do that and the authorities will send inspectors who aren’t displaying the ID to test if we’ll challenge them.

I think it is active possible for the engine to runaway: fuel leak. Remember it has presumably just ingested several metres of chain link car park fence, a few door mirrors and a tree. Surely if oil was getting into the burner cans then the engine would accelerate (and then the turbines would coke themselves into oblivion destroy the balance and screw the engine abruptly and completely)

I doubt they even used a "converted" freighter, instead, they probably just purchased an old 747-400 and yanked out all of the pieces in the lower deck cabin so it looks like a cargo version to the untrained eye. I guess they turned the stairs and filmed from the 'other' door to accommodate the camera equipment... if the stairs were right at the L1 door it would have made for some awkward filming. Turning the stairs gives more room for the equipment and the scene and also maybe lets them follow characters upstairs more easily.

That is a London Good Delivery bar weighing 400 Troy ounces (about 12.5 kg) which would have quite a heft to it. Then at 10:12 he pushes two loaded pallets of bars like he was pushing a wheelbarrow. He has about 600-700 bars there, which would weigh 7 to 9 tonnes. It would be like pushing a truck.

When an airplane is under tow, the steering is locked out to prevent damage to the airplane. They had to use engine power to break away from the towbar so the tiller would steer the aircraft.

Well actually, you cant use the tiller when being towed. The tow guy will install a nose gear stearing bypass pin so hé can make the nosegear follow his towbar. This Pin makes sure that the hydraulic fluid from the 2 steering actuators goes in a loop. When this Pin is installed, the tiller is not working.

Hi Kelsey, there is an old episode of The A-team where they hijack back a 747 (called Beller Air), they take control of it and land it on - probably - LAX. But after landing somehow the plane skids off the runway and ends up shattering a high glass window on a terminal.

The thing about the engine, a similar thing happened on the Qantas QF32 flight where one of the engines had an uncontained failure and damaged control lines to the engine. They had to tell the emergency crew on the ground to pour suppressant foam into the engine to make it flame out, and therefore safe to let the stairs come to they aircraft. Also, if you haven't already, could you do an analysis of the QF32 incident?

I would disagree with one point here, you claim in the final bit of this that there is no way for that engine to accelerate as there's no one adding fuel, certainly under normal operation that would be the case, but this seems to be far outside the normal operating envelope of a 747. I'd suggest with the damage the aircraft has taken hitting the hangar and from the subsequent explosion it's possible something in the control system became damaged. Those throttles rely on sending an electrical signal which tells the FADEC the physical position of the throttle, the system then calculates the required position of the of the fuel control valve to meet the demanded thrust, and sends another electrical signal to command the actuator controlling that valve to move the valve to the appropriate position. (This is a simple explanation, based on knowledge of a generic FADEC control system, rather than with 747 specific knowledge, but the general operating principal will be the same) Anyways, my point here is that if you get an electrical fault on that system, it is conceivably possible (albeit unlikely) that the system could start commanding an increase in thrust without the physical throttle position having changed. I'll also mention that the FADEC takes in data from a number of sources including sensors in the engine and around the aircraft (temperatures at various points, pressures etc etc) to help it determine how much fuel needs to be fed into the engine to generate the desired thrust, so if these sensors are damaged and relaying bad information to the system it may well also start accelerating the engine while the system believes it's maintaining constant thrust ouput. Finally, it's theoretically possible that if that fuel control valve has taken a beating it may well be the actuator has been damaged and the valve knocked further open than it should be, although with such a sudden change in fuel input to the engine I'd expect some sort of upset, like compressor stalls or surges.

TENEEEEEEEEEEET omg this movie was MINDBLOWING!! The mask drop in the corridor did give the plot away tho, that was a pity. If that scene wasn't there I wouldn't have caught on NEARLY as quickly, and I absolutely LOVE when a movie assembles a puzzle in front of you and you haven't a clue until it's almost complete. Memento, inception, that sort of thing. Temporal mechanics are just an awesome plot device in my book. Not quite as enthusiastic about having to walk people through the plot like I'm teaching my mother how to print, but the movie is WELL worth the hassle.

What's really funny is that while watching Tenet, I immediately thought of you and previous discussions that you would had in regards to the fact that all of the Freight in the back is strapped down to those channels in between so that nothing moves back and forth and when they're showing you that section I'm immediately looking for that knowing about that and of course now when I watch any movie with any airplane I'm immediately watching to see whether or not there's any fuel in the wing any fuel in the engine and whether or not there's going to be any type of an explosion simply because of the fact that you point that out so much

I load and unload planes at UPS and 747 family being a few of them, biggest things that bother me outside what kelsey has pointed out, Where are the locks for the cargo? We have locks for every section and lock on the side railings. The inside look of the cargo deck doesn't look long enough to be a 747. Dont have a "tube" in the ceiling on our 747's, but our MD-11's do. When entering 1L on your left (for ours) we have the control panel to work positions 1/2/3 at the nose of the plane. Where are the wing walkers? why wernt the two bad guys running away from the plane BEHIND THE ENGINES get jet blasted 100 yards? before push back, the mechanic puts a pin in the hydraulic bypass in the front gear so the pilots cant snap off the tow bar by accident 14:41 bye bye tow bar by snapping the front gear or push back getting turned sideways into the engines. (i have much to complain about but this is already gone on for a bit).

As much as I love the Airbus A380 and its modern flight deck, and updated systems to help the Pilot and F/O fly, but there is something just nostalgic about the Boeing Series. From the 737 to the 777 and the Flagship 747 Boeing just knew how great a design would long live in the aviation industry. Now I'm sure the same could be said about the fans of older DC-9's and others. I'm just partial to Boeing. Aviation has come a long way and I cannot wait to see what is designed for the future.
