I've always said that the pitch meeting went "Ok, we get it. You have a bunch of criminals take over a prison transport plane. Is there any way you can get our new casino in Vegas into the movie? Also, Chevy wants a classic corvette highlighted. If you can work that out in the script, we will green light it...." 🙂

I've been binge watching this series and I made some notes for movie directors 1. Planes aren't "basically big flying cars" 2. The wings have wires in it 3. And fuel 4. You don't use yoke on ground 5. You want to wear your shoulder harness as little as possible These seem to be 5 things that the movies get wrong the most often

The town I grew up in (Wendover) was one of the last filming locations and after filming the plane was left there and is free to go walk through at the airport (KENV). It was really cool being able to see it and learning about a lot of the little things that happened during filming. Like the lower area that the landing gear is in, isn't even a real spot in the plane.

"I don't know how all these convicts know the schematics of this aircraft" Later in the movie, as they were going through Cyrus Grissom's cell, they find (amongst other troubling contraband) schematics of that plane. As the convicts seem to have a coordinated plan, it would stand to reason that where things were and how they worked was information that was passed between them during the planning stages, including this hatch.

Some pilots like Kelsey want to pretend like they have a hard job. So they say normal people can't fly and work a aircraft. But really it's super easy. A guy hijacked one not long ago and flew great just from playing flight simulators.
@vbscript2
@vbscript2 4 жыл бұрын
@@clutchnixon5880 "Flew great?" You mean the ramp worker from Horizon who stole the Dash 8? The one who crashed it and died? Not sure that I'd call that "flying great." The only reason he even knew how to start the thing was that repositioning those exact aircraft (on the ground) was part of his job. Sure, someone with a decent amount of sim experience and who had on-the-job training for how to actually start and taxi the aircraft could taxi out to a runway, take off, and fly around visually for a while. Making a survivable landing, however, is a completely different story, unless they've either been trained in how to set up and enable the autoland system on that particular aircraft or they can get a trained pilot for that aircraft on the radio who can walk them through it. Someone who has never flown a plane before safely landing a Dash 8 (let alone a larger jet) by themselves without autoland is just not going to happen. There was a guy a while back who safely landed a smaller twin turboprop after the pilot died in flight... but that guy was a licensed private pilot with hundreds of hours.

Not a pilot but do have some electrical background. I thought the part where they hooked the transponder to a lantern battery to be super ridiculous. Not only did the convict know which wires were the power supply of the transponder itself... But I also highly doubt that even if the transponder could operate off the 6 Volts DC a standard lantern battery provides.. Said battery would go dead rather quickly.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed pretty sure the avionics power supply on most aircraft is 24V DC certainly for larger aircraft seems to be fairly typical seems unlikely that it would be any lower given the equipment load. Hell even car electrical systems run on 12V and they have a significantly smaller electrical load for their equipment panels seems to me the current draw would be excessive to run all the avionics on such a low voltage.

The little box stenciled TRANSPONDER is not the transponder, it is just the transponder control module, where you enter your transponder code. No need to pull it out or hot wire it, just enter your desired code. Such Hollywood hok7m.
@speed150mph
@speed150mph 4 жыл бұрын
You missed a big one Kelsey! The scene where they are flying away and where tower is tracking the other plane thinking it’s them. ATC can only identify a transponder by the code that they provide. If that transponder was set to standby then it wouldn’t exactly give an ident to the tower. On top of that, unless they were flying super low to the ground in a military style terrain hugging profile to avoid radar, ATC would still be tracking them on secondary radar. They wouldn’t have as accurate a picture without the info from the transponder and the refresh rate of the radar, but it would be good enough to vector fighters to intercept them, which I figure is what would happen if a plane full of convicts hijacked a plane.
@TheAmazingLee01
@TheAmazingLee01 4 жыл бұрын
Something I was kind of surprised Kelsey didn't mention is that the scenic tours plane would probably be squawking 1200. I'm sure ATC would be more than a little confused why two IFF squawks were right on top of each other.

Unless I'm highly mistaken (which I easily could be), it seems the dude rigged a battery to the transponder, as I guess being disconnected from the plane, the transponder would have no power. No power would be an effective way to not get tracked. But I think the idea is that he wanted the transponder to be tracked, so the feds would be looking in the wrong place entirely (because of the little plane giving the hijacked plane's signal) instead of looking around as many places as possible or keeping the search near the last known location (because no signal).

When I first saw this movie my heart was nearly broken at what they did to a perfectly beautiful Sabreliner. Looks like the T-39A. The T-39 was retired from the AF and some, at least, were sold on the civilian market. I worked on the T-39A as a young Air Force crew chief and flight mechanic in 1971 at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. I loved that aircraft. Loved working on it and loved flying on it as an enlisted crew member.
4 жыл бұрын
As a former writer for Hollywood, the Saberliner in the film is not the one they crashed/ripped to pieces. Sturios (especially back in the 90s) are not going to take a perfectly good and REAL airplane and tear it up. That's what the prop department is for (no pun regarding "prop" intended). ... and Hollywood is good at making "shell" vehicles that look like the real thing (planes and vintage Corvettes). Just sleep calm knowing they did not destroy a real jet!

Something you missed about the transponder scene, is the fact that he powered it with a 6V lantern battery, the DC bus in virtually every aircraft that isn't a single engine GA plane is 24V, there's no way you can power any 24V equipment with a 6V battery (you MIGHT get away with using an 18V power tool battery, but definitely not a 6V lantern battery) Edit: that scene at the end where the plane hit the hard rock guitar and ripped part of the wing off, that plane would immediately bank left and probably hit a building, the ailerons simply don't have enough authority to counteract that much asymmetric lift (especially when you only have 1 of them)

The whole wiring thing was ridiculously he had hundreds of stripped wires twisted random ones to an antique torch battery yes only 6v left all the others exposed. So on the million to one chance it would work without shorting out that battery would not power the transponder for more than a few minutes.
@mwbgaming28
@mwbgaming28 4 жыл бұрын
@@dogwalker666 it wouldn't power it at all, 24V gear generally won't work much below about 18V, even life sustaining medical equipment that runs on a 24V battery will shut down below 20V (If they can't make that run at a low voltage, no way an aircraft transponder will work on 6V)

I’m not a pilot and I’ve only flown flight sims at work. I don’t know how similar the c123 is to the c130J but one of our flight sims is the cut out of an old c130 cockpit with “newish” panels and HDDs. In that sin there is enough room to step into the seat from the out side. Also our panels aren’t fastened with screws but rather a mechanism that you twist and it kind of latches. It’s actually pretty easy to manipulate, but it’s a lab and that might be for ease of hot swapping. I haven’t had the chance to hop onto one in the flight line yet but I hope to soon. Great videos, I enjoy watching them.

@74 Gear. You do see wires in the "Con Air" movie, Specifically, in your video, at 20:22, you can freeze frame and see a severed wire hanging from the tail section. Also, They don't state it in the movie, but landing on "The Strip" means a higher chance that the prisoners aboard the plane can escape in the confusion. If they'd landed at the Airport, they'd be in a secure location, and easier to round up. So that prisoner Pilot was full of it, and took advantage of the fact that Po had no knowledge of aviation. (Side note, Where the hell did he get a Vietnam "Grunt" style helmet in that plane?) Finally, Po is Ex US Army Ranger, so was probably deployed from similar Aircraft in his Airborne Training. Which would explain basic knowledge of that style of aircraft, at least for storytelling purpose.

And i mean, even without the scaremongering, they should. A plane is a crucible where various factors and variables meet. You never know who is 20 rows behind you, safer to be trained and ready.

I get that the reason for them steering with the yoke is so they don't confuse viewers, who would probably think the rudder pedals are brakes and gas or something, but all it would take is a couple big budget hollywood movies showing the right thing and making passing comments about what is going on and most people would understand

All they really need is a quick close-up of the pilot's feet moving the rudder pedals followed by a quick cut to the rudder turning, then the plane. It would only take 2 or 3 seconds of screen time.

5:48 "Is it realistic to take [the transponder] out and put it on another plane? Yeah." No. The transponder needs an antenna. It needs to be connected to an antenna on the (lower) surface of the plane. It won't work without an antenna. Also, most airplanes don't have anything to directly monitor the transponders in other airplanes. 10:01 There is virtually no way that ATC would be fooled that the twin Beach was the hijacked plane. The Beach would have its own transponder. And if it was under ATC control it would likely have its own unique squawk code. The hijacked plane would probably still give a primary return on radar. If you were looking for a hijacked plane one with a primary return and no transponder would be a prime suspect.

I'd also just like to say I disagree with your point about the wing not exploding when they say there's no fuel. Once you fuel an aircraft up for the first time you'll never get the fuel system totally dry again, short of thoroughly cleaning it out and leaving it to sit with the tanks open for an extended period. There will always be residual fuel in the tanks, even if there isn't sufficient to really register on the fuel gauge and isn't enough to keep an engine running. Arguably a tank which is pretty much drained of fuel like that is more of an explosion risk than one that is full of fuel. When the tank's full there isn't space for the fuel to evaporate and mix with oxygen, so all you have is liquid fuel, you could throw a match in it and nothing would happen. (I don't, of course, advise or condone trying this, nor do I take responsibility if you do) However when the tank is empty or nearly empty of fuel the residual fuel is able to evaporate and form an explosive mix with the air in the tank, throw a match in that and it's going to be a very bad day. Of course, if you're talking about the fire risk when a tank is ruptured, then sure, more fuel in a full tank means theres more fuel to leak out of the tank, mix with air outside the tank and burn, but that will be fuel burning, not exploding.

At the Fresno, CA airport we had a young girl (15 or 16?) sneak onto the airfield, get into a king air, start the engines, and run it into a building. I don't think it's too difficult to get engines going on a lot of aircraft. Doing it safely and correctly is a bit more challenging.
