One of the presidents plane is tail number 26000. It is the plane that brought President Kennedy back to Washington. It has been restored to make it look like that day. My brother retired from the Air Force after serving 26 years and Write-Pat was his last duty station. You can tour those presidential planes but call ahead first to see if it is going to be open that day as this hanger sits on an active part of the base.

Also, it's fairly difficult (not to mention dangerous) to try and shoot open a well-build door with an assault rifle. There is a reason they use shotguns for that. I work at an FBO where I've seen Harrison Ford fly in several times, in a CJ. He sits in the captain's seat, unlike John Travolta who has always arrived as a passenger. The first time I was behind him as he climbed aboard, I couldn't help but hope he said "get off my plane!" But alas, he didn't. Incidentally, the part of the movie I always say is the most unrealistic is something you mentioned, about the 747 banking around the tower. 🙄

@nekomatafuyu
@nekomatafuyu 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose there's the possibility that the radar lock is from the fighters' targeting suite, and that they then launched heat seekers. I honestly don't know enough though to give anything other than guesswork.
@TheJohn22227
@TheJohn22227 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the radar lock could've just been a general lock, not necessarily missile lock. And chaff usually is deployed at the same time as flares so I guess it could be explained. At the very least it should say countermeasures deployed!
@RJ-rg2iz
@RJ-rg2iz 5 жыл бұрын
@@nekomatafuyu You are correct this is entirely possible. The migs radars would show a lock regardless and the pilots would fire an infrared guided missile at this range. So the scene isnt that bad. However, that still raises the issue that the radar warning receiver and countermeasure system used by the US air force would not be able to detect an infrared missile launch automatically like it can a radar guided missile launch, Harrison Ford would need to press a button to deploy flares manually. To this day in most aircraft infrared missile launches are still detected with the mk1 eyeball.

I know it's a movie, so we can for the most part treat it as just a bit of fun, but if we are gonna talk realism, the bit when there are a flight of four MiG-29s (which is quite possibly one of the best and most agile jet fighters of recent times) that are unable to shoot down a big lumbering B747 despite being line astern from the thing at what is pretty much the optimal firing range for both guns and short range IR guided missiles, is preposterous. The MiG-29's internal gun is the GSh-30-1. This is a 30mm auto-cannon with has an effective range of up to 1,800 metres; it fires 1,500 rounds per minute, so just one of those fighters - let alone a flight of four of them - is going to make pretty short work of shooting down a big airliner if it opens up on it with that thing with even a very short burst of gunfire, since it fires about 25 explosive 30mm cannon shells every second; just a couple of hits would probably be fatal for what is essentially a thin-skinned commercial airliner. You would have to be the most inept fighter pilot ever to not be able to hit an airliner with a wingspan of nearly 200 feet, which is in a slow turn a few hundred meters in front of you when firing at it with a gun like that because this is pretty much the ideal set up for an easy guns kill. At that kind of range, the MiGs might use short-range IR-guided (i.e. heat-seeking) missiles to destroy such a target as is shown in the movie, although in fact the MiG-29 can also carry the longer-ranged Vympel R-27, which comes in two flavours; one is a semi-active radar homing variant, the other uses a an infra-red heat seeking sensor, so they could in reality have engaged it from well beyond visual range, but of course that doesn't make for an exciting scene in a movie, so instead the film-makers went for short ranged missiles. On a MiG-29, those short-ranged missiles would either be Vympel R-73s (minimum engagement distance is about 300 metres; maximum firing range is about 4km), or they might more likely be Vympel R-60s for a Soviet client state, as these older missiles are often a bit more likely to be exported. And on the subject of air to air missiles, that's another thing which movies always get completely wrong too: Missiles such as the ones mentioned above do not come off the launch rails of the fighter which is firing them, like they are laser beams - they typically drop considerably before igniting the propellant in order to ensure they clear the aircraft. For example, an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile - which is the western equivalent to those two Russian IR-guided missiles - can drop as much as 100 feet below the aeroplane before it will begin tracking its target. It's worth noting too that missiles such as these do not have a rocket engine which burns throughout the flight; the rocket engine typically burns for only a few seconds to accelerate the missile to speeds of around Mach 2.5, and having reached that speed quickly, the missile effectively 'coasts' its way to the target. So showing such missiles with a glowing tailpipe is incorrect, they most often just leave a big trail of smoke from the still very hot but no longer functioning rocket motor. Fun missile fact: Because the seeker head is constantly scanning to track the target on such IR-guided missiles, the missile tends to make a lot of course corrections, so the smoke trail such missiles leave is often quite serpentine in appearance; this is where the Sidewinder missile gained its name. The worst offender for an appallingly unrealistic depiction of missiles in movies, is however the 2001 film Behind Enemy Lines, where an F/A-18 Super Hornet is depicted being shot down by a Serbian 9M33 missile which apparently has an endless supply of rocket propellant that allows it to make numerous turns so if can have several goes at trying to hit the aircraft. This is absolutely laughable. It is one of numerous factual inaccuracies and laughable mistakes in that movie, which are almost too many in number to list. Incidentally, if you like aeroplane action movies which portray things fairly realistically but which is still fun to watch, look no further than the 1991 movie, Flight of the Intruder, which has a very realistic portrayal of surface to air missiles engaging Grumman A-6 Intruders which are running bombing missions over North Vietnam. It's a great, fun movie if you like a bit of jet aeroplane action.

Behind Enemy Lines has so many mistakes in it. Do not watch it with a pilot and god help you once he lands in the tree. From there on do not watch it at all with a SERE guy. It's what you should do in a plane: get the plane to 1m to 10m (depending on the type) over the runway and hold the aircraft stable at that altitude without power. It goes down itself if all power is consumed. Airline pilotes lands sometimes "early" with higher speed as they are used to land in bad weather (where normal pilots wouldn't flying) If you are used to "newer" landings you touch down earlier and fly still there is no lift left on the wing (your plane is still partways on the landing gear).

Well, from the opening part of the movie, the spokeswoman for the President was saying during a tour that the hull of the plane could withstand gunfire. So for the sake of the fiction, it was supposed to be okay. Not so much in real life if you consider all the systems running throughout the interior of the ship. Sure one could surmise that the exterior was meant to protect from external threats, but a gunfight on the inside with unprotected systems? Clearly, we weren't supposed to think so hard about these things, let alone a secret service agent in such a place of trust so flippantly betraying his charge.
