I can actually reply to this one, I used to live on the border of Lake st Claire in Michigan. At one point my phone was telling me I was roaming while standing inside my own home. I called Verizon and they said my phone was picking up a Canadian tower and that they broadcast in a much much higher wattage and they would correct the problem. They did. But that may be why you phone picked up signals over Canada.

@@spartansheep915 Lmao as ground crew the uniform is one of those things that I really don’t envy about pilots. My uniform consists of a polo shirt, durable trousers with huge extra pockets on the side of my thighs, high vis vest and Kevlar work shoes though during hot weather I can switch my trousers for shorts. I don’t have to spend ages getting my uniform perfectly ironed and pressed or bothering with makeup. While I regularly brush my short hair it’s never going to be perfect due to the amount of time I spend on a windswept airfield. But I enjoy my work though, except for maybe when the weather is too hot and of course there are some things I prefer over others. For example there’s something cool about towing a huge multi million pound aircraft into position so it can start up its engines and propel itself slowly down the taxi way before finally powering along the runway and taking off into the sky. No matter how many times I see it, I never get tired of watching them take off or land. Honestly I hope I never lose that feeling.

With the phone battery draining - it's not just the regular drain. The phone adjusts its receiver and transmitter power to reach the nearest base station reliably, and two more barely. If the reception is weak, it increases power. If there are none in range, it just blasts full power non stop to reach any and uses up way more battery than normally.

I heard that cell phone tower signals don't go anywhere near 30,000 feet. That makes sense that phones use a lot of power looking for a signal.
@vbscript23 жыл бұрын
@@dannydaw59 Yep. That's because the antennas on the towers are designed to broadcast the signal outward and downward, not upward. Transmitting to the sky would be a waste of power. Plus, if they actually did receive signals from the cell phones on airplanes, it would wreak havoc on the cell network. Which actually used to happen in the early, less advanced days of the cell network. Which is the reason for the FCC rule banning the use of cell radios on aircraft in the air. Contrary to popular belief, that rule never had anything to do with flight safety, but rather only with interference with the cell network. It's an FCC rule, not an FAA rule. However, the reason for the rule is decades out-of-date, as the FCC itself has been saying since the early-to-mid 2000s. They proposed removing the rule as early as 2004 and again in 2013, but the FA unions complained because they don't want to deal with disturbances caused by passengers making voice calls in flight. There was a proposal to remove the FCC rule and create a DoT (presumably FAA) rule to ban voice calls in flight, but the wonders of government bureaucracy meant that it was easier to just leave the FCC rule in place than for DoT to make a new one to replace it. As such, using a cell phone in flight remains banned for absolutely no reason, even for general aviation pilots. The (FAA) rule that actually did have to do with flight safety was the one that required all non-approved electronic devices (not just cell phones) to be turned off when below 10,000 feet. But that rule was repealed back in 2013. Pilots may still request that passengers turn off electronic devices when flying approaches in particularly poor visibility, though, due to the possibility for interference with the ILS signals. A popular misconception is that aviation hardware is cutting-edge engineering. That may be true with regards to things like the mechanical design of a brand-new engine, but it is decidedly not true with respect to things like ILS and comm radios. The latter use 1920s-to-1930s-era radio technology and are super easy to interfere with. The glideslope and localizer are literally just a pair of directionally-broadcast AM signals (yes, the same sort of signal that an AM radio station uses) using the same carrier frequency with a different tone modulated on each one. The receiver just determines which tone it's receiving more strongly than the other and uses that to determine which side of the centerline you're on. That's literally all it does, so it would be trivial for even an unintentional transmission at the right frequency from some device in the cabin to throw it off.

Turning the Phone off on a plane is not for the safety of the plane. It's not a FAA regulation, it's a FCC regulation. At takeoff and landing a plane would very rapidly connect hundreds of phones from one cell tower to the next and disturb the cell quality near airports (very short explanation). That's the real reason why you're asked to turn it off.

Your mostly correct about the cell phone getting a bunch of texts while flying. I am an Electronics tech for a large tech company. We are NOT allowed to have our cell phones out while in the plant. But as soon as you get in the breakroom it is OK. Where I work, there is a lot of steel and concrete and blocks 99% of the signal. As soon as I go on break (has a large window we can look out), I check for missed calls - none. but I notice that I have sometimes 2 or 3 voicemails. The cell phone company knows that your phone is NOT responding (communicating) to any signal being sent to your phone, so it sort of "holds" them until it starts to respond and then "dumps" any comms that you missed to your phone.

The reason why cellphones disconnect have nothing to do with altitude. A cellphone works fine at 30 000 feet no problem.. The issue is speed. High speed shifts the spectrum of the phone, specially so if you head right for or from the base station. Typically the phone will disconnect around about 400km/h, but it depend a lot on the angle. Second gen 4G have fixed this problem and increased the speed to 750km/h this is mostly to handle high speed trains better
@Valantir3 жыл бұрын
I was about to say, I used to fly smaller planes under 10,000 ft and only 200 ish mph. Would routinely call from the halfway point to let the wife know we were returning because where I had been had no cell service
@matsv2013 жыл бұрын
@@Valantir Yea.. for 4G they solved that problem. The issue with most 4G is for the 2600Mhz the range is just 5 km or so, and because the base stations genearly just have a up angle of 15 degree (the inner city one have more), they reach just a few thousand feets. If you have a 4G phone and a carrier that supports 800Mhz, you should get signal in a airliner, at least to 20 000 feet, probobly 30 000 feet. It might not reach 40 000 feet. The interesting thing is that the rule to turn of phones have nothing with airline safety to do. It dates back to the analog phone system and they figured that having a large number of phones in the same aircraft moving throw the system in a fast pace would crash the phone system, so they simply banned phones on planes.
@Valantir3 жыл бұрын
@@matsv201 i will point out that I used to have a problem with some carriers phones that a second before any text or call came in a tone “beep-beep-beep-“ would come through any nearby speaker/ headset. It would cut out radio transmissions sometimes, which is I understand why they still have “transmitting functions must be off for takeoff and landing” much more likely to have that step on an atc instruction then vs at cruise.
@matsv2013 жыл бұрын
@@Valantir Well even with 4G service will be cut quite a lot that leads to a lot of roaming, and nowadays everyone have a phone, so the problem is really just getting larger. But i will assume that they probobly pretty soon start getting landbased Wifi service in aircraft in steed of the slow satellite once they have now. Now when patch antennas is common, aircraft tracking is really not a problem that it would have been back in the dish days. I go on a cruse yearly.. with like the same company every year. A typical ship carries 3000 people. When they are close to land they use a land base transmitter and its pretty much fiber speed. When they lose the land base tracking switch to satellite they limit everyone usage to 500MB/day.. That really for 240P youtube usage, some facebook and a bit of mail, is really sufficient. Also the first two hours and the last two hours its in range of the coast... i barley ever use more than 200 or 300MB. The last cruses i really didn´t even bother limiting youtube.

A pilot episode of a series that actually has a pilot is a brilliant move Love this show, and the fact NBC made fun of themselves. Tina Fey is talented, as well as the rest of the cast

We make much better movies and shows, way better than corrupt Hollywood we'd love to hear what you have to say about Air Koryo

Kelsey, can you do a viral debrief or something of the sort of videos of people getting kicked off of of planes? (Overbook, drunk, etc) I think it'd be informative and interesting to see you break down those quick snippets of videos that we can't get enough of.

That's what I try to explain to people, altitude change effects are real. It happens to me too minding my own business, when I sit down and standup.

Imagine a vegan pilot who loves doing cross-fit on layovers. He/she would never shut up.

i remember wearing headsets at work, we used those small see through ones government guys use in movies and there is just a 4 food tire that tucks under the shirt and into a walkie-talkie shoved into your back pocket. The wire was uncomfortable when walking around and the ear piece itself was uncomfortable and made you half deaf in one ear even though you had to press down on it to fully be able to listen to what the other person was saying in a noisy environment. I wouldnt want to ever work with a headset unless im sitting down again.

This video was entertaining as always! Thank you for all your great content! Also, I'd love to see you do a Hollywood vs. Reality on The Aviator (2004), Scorsese's film about Howard Hughes.
