Try a mix of 40:1 might help with the cold starts by bumping up compression a hair!! Can't hurt might also help to protect it those 4hp run hot anyway!!

Ingenious fix - well done. Still like helicoil for long term solution, but this worked out much better than I would have expected. Still wonder why it's so hard to start for you, but the electric drill solution would seem to be a good answer for anyone using it on a long term basis. Looking forward to the next video.

I had a 74 4hp Johnson seahorse a long time ago and you’d have to crank the throttle up high when starting too. Then it ran fine. Wondering if it might help to put the lid on it while starting to restrict it some? Good video 👍

What plugs are you running? I put NGK plugs (BR6HS) in mine and haven’t had any issues. It seems to me you have to have the throttle advanced too far forward for it to start, which of course also advances the timing plate. I’m thinking those plugs aren’t putting out enough spark to light it off at the normal start position, and it needs help from a drill (or a strong young man).

Good trick with pinning the bolt in place! Would be a permanent fix for me. My Evinrude 4hp definitely needs the throttle past the start point for cold and warm starts. Fuel delivery on these is an issue so it helps to raise the fuel tank to same elevation it would be in a boat (ie. 15 inches lower than motor). A spare starter rope to use on the flywheel will get you more bang for your buck than that recoil starter. Will save having to take a cordless drill along. Take care and may the the four be NOT with you anymore:)

Those little motors u got to give it a good bit of throttle to start them and once they start u can back the throttle off. Its just the way they are

I guess you have deep pockets and since no one fixes things any longer. I wouldn’t complain if you over pay for replacements. This was done out of fun. If we get a few spins on the lake and someone learns something from the video. Great

It doesn’t seem like your putting enough torque on the flywheel nut! If it isn’t enough the key will shear.

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. "Classic" low comp is around 60 psi, well, in these parts anyway. It's at 80 even with about 5 hand pulls- maybe a little more using a drill. I did want to put new rings in it but unfortunately they are unavailable!!! Did find one set on ebay and they weren't cheap- Thanks again !
@alberthafner21942 ай бұрын
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1If the piston groves are worn, even new rings won't help.much. Those engine lasted longer and ran better on 32:1 mix.
