750 Watt Fat Tire Electric Bicycle Comparison: Troxus Explorer vs Aventon Aventure.2

I just decided on which one. Purchasing an e-bike hadn't really crossed my mind until the past few months and having some good experience with rentals. I went to the big local bike shop to inquire about the Aventon A2 and left with a receipt for a Troxus Lynx Plus. The 20" tires were a much better fit for me in regard to size. I'm a middle-aged woman who is not tiny (5'4", 138 lbs, short legs) but I do have physical limitations that make me want/need to feel closer to the ground. Lectric (which I've ridden a few times as rentals) are just too big for me - I don't like them. I've read so many positive reviews about the Aventon Adventure 2 and the two frame sizes seems like a no-brainer. But the shop owner, who is also an authorized Aventon service provider, shared with me that Aventon has been less responsive to repairs for some time now. They'll have bikes waiting weeks for replacement parts and Aventon doesn't respond to their queries. Assistance and part orders are "falling through cracks" as one of the techs said. The owner said that considering the bike that I was interested in was similar in build and style to Troxus that I should consider that brand. He has a good rapport with Troxus and considering the fact that I don't know a thing about maintaining e-bikes - having a repair shop that knows what it is doing and can actually get what it needs from the company whose bikes they sell/maintain is kind of important. Bonus - I've never ridden an e-bike with a torque sensor. The newer versions of Troxus bikes are offering the ability to switch between torque and cadence. I'm rather excited to try that out :) ETA: There were no sales going on in the store. I don't think independent dealers operate that way. Both bikes - the Aventon Adventure 2 and the Troxus Lynx Plus were offered at the exact same price ($1999).

The cadence sensor on the Troxus works so well. I'm not sure I even care about a torque sensor. I'm a super experienced cyclist. Two things I really appreciate on the Troxus is the unlimited chainring clearance and the cassette instead of freewheel. I am running a 52 tooth chaining and thinking of going up to a 60. I changed the cassette from a 12-32 to a 11-28. I can pedal meaningfully at 30mph, no clown pedaling. Torque sensors don't work when clown pedaling. PS For those that want to change their cassette you'll need a Park FR-1.3 cassette tool. It has a 15mm pass thru hole to fit over the 14mm axle of the hub motor. If you have a freewheel, Area 13 makes a special tool for them.

FYI, Aventure is a cassette as well. I've upgraded mine and it's just a standard shimano HG hub.

@@georgekrpan3181 I'm not sure, I know the aventure 2 comes with a 48t, and I think people have gone as large as a 50 or possibly a 52 on the aventure without issues. Personally I find the 48t with a 10 or 11 tooth "top end" rear cog is a great combo to avoid ghost pedaling at higher speeds but not give up too much up hill capability.

@@stephenbrothers9185 There's really not a whole lot of difference between a 48 and a 52. Next time I'll go for a 10 speed cassette and 60 tooth chainring.

@@georgekrpan3181 I stuck with the stock 46t chainring on my Aventon Aventure 1 and put on a shimano 11-51t cassette and a sram gx shifter/deraulier and love it. I put the same setup on my Aventure.2 other than that I kept the stock 48t chainring up front and I think it's also a great fit. If you don't do any hills, the extremely large chainring up front might be ok, but it wasn't a compromise I was willing to make for where/what I ride.

Like how the Aventon's rear rack anchors to the rear frame legs vs the Troxus. With the Troxus that rack frame blocks out a fair portion of the 'brake' lights.

That's a great call-out. There are small differences in the two frames. The shape as a whole of the frame is the same, but there are small differences like the one you just mentioned. One other small difference is the on/off/pas +/pas - is a bit different on each.

I'm quite sure that the Aventure motor is a Bafang despite it being rebranded Aventon

Yes, i agree w you. The motor feels like it has the same power/torque so no real difference.

Are there any bike companies that allow you to pay extra & customize your bike with derailers , brakes, forks, etc?? Id like an adventure with $20-50 better on each part. Better hydro brakes, better derailleur, better front forks. What else am I missing? $200 would go a looong way on upgrades I think. I can buy a $68 seat at home.

Not aware of any DTC brands except for Electric Bike Company...I'm sure there are smaller/boutique companies that would do this.

The battery difference is huge. I mean how much more does it cost? $20??

It's 33% bigger (48v 15ah vs 48v 20ah)...a replacement battery is $500...that's obviously not the price but the bigger battery is probably worth $100-200

Good brand overall. Not the most exciting bike but good middle ground. I prefer M160.

Aventon isn’t making their own motors. I’m sure most people realize that. Just a different Chinese company. They quality of the batteries is important i think. Samsung or Sanyo or LG OR maybe one or two other well known batteries would be nice.

I don't think it's mentioned in the video but the Troxus uses Samsung cells. The Aventon site says the Adventure 2 uses LG cells.

@@Top5ebikes That's exactly what I did. I got front and rear basket and winter storage (no freezing temps) for free for my trouble. I also got the 2nd battery for $300 so a pretty good deal.

Don't be cheap and get something you want to upgrade a few months later.. Go for a Wired Cruiser or a Wired Freedom .. Or an Ariel Rider Kepler . Even a Magicycle Deer or Magicycle Ocelot . get a fast big 52 volt or bigger .. 30-40 mph bike. 😂 Joking.. Those two bikes in the video here are ok👍😎

Thanks for the comment and those are both great ebikes as well. Wired ebikes are beasts! For sure if you want a 2000w peak motor, you should go w the Freedom or their Cruiser...I also like the Ocelot for a smallr frame fat tire ebike.

The Kepler has a 1000w motor yet it is really no faster than the 750w Troxus. I watched a vid of a guy doing speed runs on a Kepler and I own an Explorer. The Kepler supposedly has 1800w peak while the Troxus has 1000w peak, yet the Kepler is barely faster.

Aventon sugggzzzz😂., Also do they not go over 20 miles an hour with the throttle?, the other bike is way better by far because of the battery alone, and you can't gost pedal with a torque sensor, and that also sugghhhzzzzz. And with an extra $280 in your pocket you can do a lot of upgrading if you want.

Not going over 20 mph throttle only is the norm...if the company is following the law of course...so not going over 20 throttle only is ok in my book. I also see why some people prefer to go w Aventon since they can go to a shop to test it out & those shops will usually service it for you. I do like Troxus and they have some cool ebikes coming out w great specs but I'm not hating those that go w Aventon bc it's a safer bet for now.
