We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.

Please remember: You have to wash the grout out always in a DIAGONAL direction. If you do it straight, you will wash the grout OUT. And there will be different hights in your grouts and dirt can stay there much easier and it is much more difficult to clean. Try it out and you will see the difference. :O)

We used terracotta on our hearth but we sealed the tiles before they were laid. It was recommended to use boiled linseed oil, a very traditional treatment. We sealed the tiles again after grouting. Sealing first protected the tiles from staining and 5 years on they still look good. Love your grout solution. ❤

Yes we also used linseed oil to protect the tiles before grouting but it wasn't enough in our case 🙂

So nice! And of course you can use muriatic acid too for lime cleaning. Way more powerful than vinegar so a light touch is necessary. I've used it for many things, including spraying brick walls to remove efflorescence.

You should consider pre-sealing tiles prior to grout. It will make your job much more effective and less arduous. Try it in one of the bedrooms for example. Good luck.

Didn't mean to offend. Good to know. Here in the USA we usually grout with a hard rubber float which could save you time based on what I've seen. In other words, you could eliminate the drill and grout applicator. I am impressed with your work and perseverance throughout the series. Bravo 👏

I found myself wondering if a very thin mason's "pointe" could be used to press the mortar down into the joint. The joints look like they might be wide wnough. It might help getting less motar on the tile surface. But what you're doing iseems to be working well so perhaps not worth the extra effort. Looks really, really good. I hope you're taking a moment every day to step back and see how much you've accomplished.

Hello again, back to the tiles again 😂but you are almost at the end and you did have a bit of a break …. You really did a lovely job with them, and grouting colour is perfect, sets the tiles off beautifully so that the overall appearance is so harmonious. Quite interesting how the pigment is derived from crushed old bricks. Truly repurpose and reuse. It will be nice to see your kitchen take shape once you are able to put the fixtures in. There are so many pieces to a kitchen and as you said they do take up a lot of space when they are spread out waiting to be installed. Will you be doing the installation yourselves? Nice result. A lot of work! I wondered if when you first cleaned up the tiles if it might have been possible to wet the tiles with a sealing product to seal them so that when you laid them using the lime as cement, that might not have been absorbed and efflorescenced through? There are many types of water based and solvent based sealers. I have used a solvent based type on tiles after grouting to help seal the grout against stains and discolouration. The tiles are not usually as porous as your terracotta tiles are. I have a feeling you might have avoided a lot of work if the tiles were pre sealed. Best regards, Peter from Sydney and also Yamba and Maclean in northern NSW where I have some projects renovating and doing new buildings reusing materials and even a whole metal structural building only 20 years old that is being demolished as a public building here in Yamba, 2464 New South Wales.
