The Dreamliner sounds elegant and proud! Still not the same noise I'd like from a GE-90 or something, but it'll do. The A350, while not being MY personal favourite, seems to please a lot of passengers so I may aswell get comfortable with it around. A splendid video as usual, big like :D

G Payne amen, the 350 was an aircraft AirBus didn't want to build, they felt forced into it. The 350's use of composites is dramatically different, they use sections fitting into aluminum framing just like the windows of a house, the 787 is one piece composition which takes longer and is more expensive to build, having 75% less seams. As far as noise I'm convinced the chevrons do cut back on the louder higher pitched sounds.

Airbus originally felt forced, but after a push from the airlines, Airbus turned the 350 into something a more feasible to build. Airlines complained that the original 350 was basically a modern version of the 330 with carbon fiber fuselage and new wings + engine. Airbus intended to keep both models in production. The current 350 is wider (hence XWB) and it's sized up to attack the larger 777s. Airbus also found that the 350 worked as a good replacement for the 340-500 and -600, which were unpopular because they used 4 engines. The 350 is a little more traditional in it's construction compared to the 787, but it helps keep its costs down. Boeing gambled really hard with lots of new tech for the 787 which resulted in massive delays and cost overruns. The 787 is basically a more economical version of the cancelled Sonic Cruiser, which would have travelled around Mach 1. The Sonic Cruiser was Boeing's replacement for the 747, flying less passengers at higher speeds -> more frequencies instead of more passengers at slower speeds -> fewer frequencies.

Well the A380 engines are already quiet as is. Throw in the fact that they are pretty far from the fuselage, and since there are 4 of them that are smaller instead of 2 huge ones, they don't run at the higher power settings of say, a 777 and you get baby crying and annoy everyone on the plane levels of quiet.

I think the Trent 1000 sounds in a very similar way to some of GE's engines. (GE90, GEnx, etc...), and the XWB to the Pratt & Whitney PW series.

Let me preface this question by saying I am not an aviation expert - I prefer Amtrak and Cunard, if they are available. The question is, could a 787 be ordered with the GE90 engines? Or is it completely out of the question?

The thing is, engine manufacturers generally design engines models only for some specific airplanes and their specific needs. For example for the A350, there is only one engine available and its the RR Trent XWB. For the 787 there are two, from two different manufacturers, and they are the GEnx from and the RR Trent 1000. For this reason you will never see a 787 with the GE90 (designed for the 777) or the A350 with the Trent 900 (designed for the A380). Some engines would simply never fit or could never be installed because of their weight, sfc, thrust etc... . Hope it answers your question ;)

I've flown on a JAL 787 and thought the engine was super smooth and quiet. It's hard to judge the volume level from the videos, since the mic setup, and record levels may have been different. (There's nothing quite like an in person experience). I have an upcoming flight on an A350, and expect much the same. Smooth. Quiet. It's always kind of a shock to get off a 787 generation plane (or even an A380 or 777-300ER), and connect to flight on a domestic MD-80, or 767, to see how much the noise level, vibrations and cabins have changed for the better.

Both sound ok, but neither powred off , which increaes noise for a while. Best sound is 777 with Trent 800s powering off after climb. Evil noise . You have to be in business class though to enjoy it, otherwise you aint far enough foward .

The RR engines have a familiar high pitched whine and buzz in both planes. The whine in the 787 engine is much more bearable to my ears than that buzz in the A350, but that's just my opinion.
