I love how everyone seems to have their own religion, the Atollers seemed to have a pagan style religion revolving around nature working together but adapted to this world and the smokers have a religion that is adapted from Christianity, where there is a singular great provider who created everything and who will provide for his people so long as they are loyal and faithful.

Notice that the merchant and governor were the only two that survived. It shows that there was no maliciousness on their part in regard to the Mariner. Everyone had some sort of hidden agenda when dealing with the Mariner, and suffered the consequences for their "disbelief" in the Mariner's intentions. But since the merchant and Governor just did their job, in the case of the Governor, just acting out what the People demanded, they survived. Case in point, the Governor made it to Dry Land (aka Paradise) and inherently knew how to deal with the old bones. "He came to them as if he knew their ways."

I read somewhere that there's actually not enough water/ice on Earth to cause a waterworld. If all the ice caps were to melt, it would cause the oceans to rise and flood the coasts but certainly not all the way to covering Colorado in water. Yes I kinda nitpick about those kind of details. Still a decent movie. It probably would have a lot better at the box office had the extended cut been the version that was shown in theaters

No, how can they drill when the ground is hundreds (if not thousands) of feet below them? Besides, it's implied that most, if not all, people are unaware that "dryland" is below the water. More likely there were a few other tankers like the Deez floating around with their own crude oil supplies at one point before they were plundered by the Smokers, who then used it up, added it to their own dwindling reserves, etc.
