Hi Robert, what is the application for each round? are they both hunting rounds or is the 7mm for target? (me thinking it's not far off the 6.5 creedmoor) - thanks!

nicerperson comparing a 6.5 cred to a 7mm remmag is like comparing a 454 big block nova to a prius. The 7mm is a belted magnum slinging lead at 3,000+ fps. The 7mm is a big game round. 6.5 is target/varmint

My first center-fire rifle was a Model 70 in 7 Mag and it is a great caliber, but I hand load and now much prefer the versatility of a .30 (.308) caliber bullet. I think closely matching the ballistic co-efficient of the two bullets involved would be a more accurate test, and also experiment with various powder charges and a chronometer to arrive fairly close to the same feet per second. For a hunting situation at an average distance, and excepting a shoulder shot, my guess is that either caliber would penetrate all the way through any whitetail and most elk, but the heavier .30 caliber would carry more of the shock that actually does the killing. What turned me on to the .300 Win Mag as a young man were the factory ballistic charts that showed that caliber to be the flattest shooting except for maybe the .264 Win Mag Pronghorn medicine. As if anyone might give a shit, may favorite rifle is an early post-64 Model 70 in 300 Win Mag that has the slickest bolt and feed of any rifle I've ever held, and a perfect trigger. It has dual cross-bolts in a traditional wood stock with a Monte Carlo cheek-piece and just enough usage marks to give it character, and a floated pencil barrel. It's little and light and kicks like a bay mule, but it'll still make a three-shot hole at 100 yards that a quarter will cover. The drawback, of course, is that it's not very weather-proof. I would say it's time to end this before I start to ramble, but it's too damn late to worry about that. Right? You made an interesting vid and I want to check out your .50 Cal one.

When I was 19 I went to the range with a friend who had an 8mm Mauser, 7mm Rem Mag and a 30-06. The most accurate of the three was the 7mm Mag. The 30-06 had the least recoil. The Mauser was an antiquated rifle with open sights, the other two were scoped. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was able to hit the 24” target with all three rifles. But the highlight of the day was hitting the bullseye (5” orange center) three times with that 7mm mag at 150 yards. One little negative about the 7mm, it kicked the hardest.

Let's get back to reality of SD. If you have a high SD and velocity you get good penetration. The 7mm in 150 slightly edges the .30cal, but the .30 cal generates more energy. I would love to see what happens at 3-400 yards because I have never seen a paper plate Elk,cheer or Moose...ever!

Very nice 🙂 I thought that the 7mm will go just a bit further, but its deformation was extreme so I geuss that is why it was like so. I do not remmember you tried a shogun, so you can try to shoot the first 300 with one ounce slug, and the second with buckshot. Will be interesting to see the dammage, these ones are bigger, heavier but way slower projectiles, so deformation should be less significant, especially with the 00 buckshot. If you manage to shoot at the same 300 pack with both 00 buck snd slug, you can shoot the other one with REALLY POWERFUL crossbow, I bet that it will go trough way beyond 72 plates, if you do not have such high power crossbow, you can try the Ek archery 200 lb Titan crossbow, I think it is no more than 300 USD, and generates feaking 235 joules, this is the only one you will find which is that cheap but that powerful, actually really well made too and will last you forever, from experience. Looking forward to see any of those videos, or maybe both 😉✌😄

The reason why the 7 mag may have went thru a few more plates is the 284 diameter bullets have a higher ballistic coefficiency and sectional density than the 308 bullets there’s kind of a happy medium when it comes to bullets the larger the diameter the longer and heavier the bullet has to be to penetrate more

I think if you shit both rounds at the same spot on the plate it may make a difference. The plate where you shot the 300 is slightly thicker/denser because it was closer to center as opposed to the 7mm that treading the thinner portion of the plate.

I love all these tests you do but would be interesting to see what they do at four hundred yards and eight hundred yards differently. It seems like anything less than four hundred yards they are pretty much the same.

You have a new AR toy in the cupboard, the 7.62x51, sorry 308, with the 24" barrel, just gotta try that see the penetration compared to a shorter barrel. Your BBQ's must be fun big fella ;)

Can you please try shooting similar bullet weights? The 7mm should be using a 175 grain and the 300 Win Mag should stay with the 180 grain bullets. Live your videos thank you!!

Here is an interesting tidbit.... Shoot an 150gr. 300 against the 150 7mm; or the 175gr 7mm. Get the weights closer to same and see the 7mm difference. That might surprise you. Both are great North American big game cartridges. The 300 has the advantage on calculateble power. The 7mm gains in a # of other areas. I am a 7mm fan and have been for well over 30 years. Thanks

It's a matter of velocity and mass. Also expansion. The bigger bullet has to push harder. It's possible if you had a round two it might be different results.

It's a matter of SD, the 7Mag has a higher SD.

You could use those other paper plates to test the .45-70 compared to the. 450 bushmaster

I don't have BC's or SD's for each bullet offhand but I'm sure they are comparable even with the 7MM being lighter. Typically, smaller calibres with similar weights as larger calibres have higher BC's and SD's. The 300 has more muzzle energy than the 7 so this test is a good indicator of how better BC's and SD's translate into superior down range ballistics.

I would be interested to see the 6.5 PRC. Mauser makes an awseome "buget" rifle for around $500. I picked one up in the PRC. Definitely get alot of gun for the money IMO. Check them out. Mauser M18. EuroOptic is the cheapest place I found them. Maybe the 6.5 PRC vs The 6.5 Creedmoor. PRC is supposed to be the Creedmoor's "big brother ". Thanks for the video!
