Unlike many of the more recent magnums, the 7 mm mag actual delivered in real life what it was supposed to and advertised to do - the premier long range elk cartridge with less recoil than the .300 magnums. It worked well on moose, caribou, mountain goat, sheep, and African plains game as well. Still does because today's elk are not tougher than the elk back when the 7 mm mag. came out. Regardless of what bologna the gun media tells us.

Do you realize there are 7 species of Moose and all of them are different sizes? The Shiras Moose is the smallest and the Alaskan Yukon moose is 1500 pounds. Using the 7 mm rem mag in the Yukon moose was a bad idea because everyone I shot ran off and had to be looked for and shot again and again to get the moose to give up. The same stupid ignorance from East coast hunters that believe Alaskan brown bears are the size of Great Dane dogs and idiots believe everyone in Alaska hunts brown bears with 10 mm handguns.

Yes that load is a classic for sure. And it has killed a lot of heavy game since it hit the scene 62 years ago. What has always troubled me about 7mm Rem Mag is how often honest tests show how little more powerful it is over .30-06 in stock rifles shooting factory loaded ammunition. You load your own and shoot it out of an honest 26" magnum barrel and you got a whole 'nother beast. The same to be said of lots of cartridges.
@Simon-talks2 ай бұрын
We're gonna need a minimum of 38" barrels to make sure we can be good hunters.
@jasonshults3682 ай бұрын
Well said. I agree with everything you said here.
@masonoutdoors_masonleather2 ай бұрын
I agree that your true “magnum” cartridges, especially 7mag, need longer barrels to reach max velocity, 26 or even 28 inches or more, at some point it would be plain silly, but that’s just not what is majority available on the market. 26” used to be more standard for mags, just like 24” was for standard cartridges, the manufacturers make what sells and shorter barrels sell more and have for decades at this point.
@PassivePortfolios2 ай бұрын
One of the "secrets" is the superior sectional density and ballistic coefficient of the 7 mm vs the .30 cal. To get the same with the .30 cal. magnums, a heavier bullet has to be used, which means more recoil.
@johnnorman77082 ай бұрын
Yeah, you can take things to just plain silly when it comes to a rifle and cartridges for hunting pretty fast. I just saw a nice custom barreled CZ in 6.5x55 that was too heavy for anything except stand use. You wouldn't carry that thing over hill and dale more than once and you would do just what the original owner did; trade it. It was a target rifle not a hunting rifle.

Good review. I bet this Core-Lokt bullet in a 280 Remington would have a more uniform mushroom and 80% retention. Magnums are always hard on most cup/core, non bonded bullets.

For what they are, the old Remington Core-Lokt & Winchester Power Points really perform well.
@johnnorman77082 ай бұрын
This bullet really should have held up better and penetrated deeper even in this test. 2800 FPS muzzle speed isn't all that fast. Yes, it is 175 grains which is heavy for caliber, but the problem seems to be an overly soft bullet as opposed to blistering impact speed causing the fragmentation and lack of penetration. Bullets with as much sectional density as a 175 grain 7mm really should be able to penetrate deeper.

@DanielRifleman-pb9bd2 ай бұрын
For elk hunting it is very possible that impact distance will be a bit more to a lot more than 100 yards. I would guess penetration will be more because of slower impact velocities too. I would easily use this load if I had a 7 Rem mag.

Thank you! I am shocked. I thought the penetration would have been way deeper. The wound path and depth was marginally bigger than the smaller rounds. 😮 By smaller I mean the 6.5 Creedmoor 308 etc I used the similar 7 Mag 175 trophy bonded bear claw on whitetail and an impala in Africa and it dropped them all like Thor’s hammer.

This cartridge is probably one of the most successfully marketed cartridges of its era. People went "ballistic" lining up to drop their money on it for 30+ years before it's luster faded. And it hasn't faded all that much. It just got a lot more competition for the same job.

I am convinced that 7mm Rem Mag or any other 7mm in the same class is much closer to its balance point when being fed bullets of around 160 grains. I am also confident that there are 7mm bullets of 175 grains that would have given somehat better results at the same velocity as was delivered here. Some of them would likely not be bonded or even considered premium by todays standards.

Glad to see this test. If I were spending the big money on an elk hunt I'd use a sturdier bullet. It has great sectional density but lost too much weight in simple gel. With hide, bones etc the bullet might not hold up.
@outbackjack46270Ай бұрын
Yes, gel tests don't equate to hitting hide and bone. I used core lokts when I started hunting and they literally blew everything apart especially if you hit the animal in the shoulder bones. IF you could get perfect broad side shots and shoot them BEHIND the shoulder they're ok, not great but ok. But we all know that real world hunting is never like shooting into a gel block at 100 yards. I don't want my bullets blowing up like a varmint bullet. That's why like you I want higher weight retention into the 90%+. Schirroco, TBBC, Barnes X, Hornady CX/GMX, etc,. I use the 95gr Fusion all the time in my .243 and never had any problems with any shots at all angles and ranges to 300+ yards on deer and the 150gr Fusion in my 7mmWSM at all angles out to any range my old eyes can shoot to. I have 30-378 WBY mag set up to shoot 1000 yards but all animals I've shot have been less than 200 yards. Even in SD I seem to shoot all animals less than 300 yards. I did set up a shot at a doe at 1/2 mile off the hood of my truck with a lead sled and the Huskemaw scope dialed right in on her and it and the load worked as advertised (165gr XBT, WBY factory load) and I had a dead deer but that was not a satisfying experience as I was just shooting a deer, not hunting a deer.

I agree that Core-Lokt and Power Point bullets (or any cup and core bullet) tend to behave much better when started slower out of standard cartridges. I don't consider starting speeds of 2800 FPS magnum speed territory really. It might be interesting to see if this generation of pointed soft point Core-Lokt is of the exact same construction as something from the 1970s or 1980s. I'm betting it is not. I recall hearing that Remington "tweaked" their pointed Core-Lokt bullets maybe 20 or 25 years back and got a softer bullet. I could see that happening and could understand why too. Rapid expansion does knock down deer much faster. It does not improve the penetration that is far more critical on the big, thick, and heavier critters.
@danielrobey17592 ай бұрын
They're not even close, I recall seeing pictures of the original core lokt bullets cross sectioned and they had an actual band of jacket material around the circumference of the bullet about a third of the way up from the base. It wasn't like hornadys interlock rather it was a wide band of material. I wish I could remember the article that it accompanied... Pretty sure it was a John Barsness article in Handloader magazine back in the day... Man I miss the old days of print media 😕
@danielrobey17592 ай бұрын
I just reread your post and I see you referencing 20-25 years ago and I'm thinking about the core lokts of the 60's and 70's 😮😂😂
@jasonshults3682 ай бұрын
Yes, it was John Barsness who pointed out the difference between older PSP-CL and the new (at the time and moving forward) version. He also notes that the round nose version (at the time) still had the heavier "belt" around the interior of the jacket.
@johnnorman77082 ай бұрын
Yes. It was Barsness. Found a comment he made about that redesign on the pointed Core-Lokt that he posted in 2001 which kind of dates those changes to sometime in the 1980s. So old vs new Core-Lokt is like 40 + years ago. Time flies...

I know this isn't popular with most hunters and shooters, but I don't care for, nor do I hunt or shoot anything less than .30 caliber. Even .30 caliber seems small for me as I prefer .358 and larger for hunting. This means my range flexibility is limited but I accept that. What can a 7mm Rem Mag do that a .30-06 can't? I killed my moose at 200 yards with a single shot from my .30-06 using the the plain jane Remington Core Lokt, 180 grain bullet. It's just personal preference. But, I enjoy watching the ammo testing with velocities, energy and expansion. Core Lokts aint sexy but they get the job done more often than not, compared to other more expensive, fancier sounding ammo that won't perform any better and many times perform worse than the old Core Lokts.
