Back in the 1980s, when I got my Colt Sporter II with the new 1-7 twist, I had a lot of issues with 45 & 55gr soft points self destructing as soon as they left the barrel. Little smoke clouds about 6 feet past the muzzle. They seem to make those light projectiles a bit more sturdy now days. So yes, you can self destruct copper jacket bullets with very fast twist rates.

Indeed! I was trying a PPU 250gr FMJ. At 1,300 fps it said "heck no" and blew apart as soon as it left the barrel.

Thanks for bringing us this review! As always great work. I don't know anyone who uses the Fort Scott ammo in my area. It's typically always on the store shelves for the exact reason your tests showed. We tested several caliber options from Fort Scott years back. I wanted to see how this so-called "tumble upon impact" ammo performed for myself. We found the ammo functions as a very expensive FMJ. If I'm paying solid copper prices I want bullets that cause real damage. The FMJ type deep penetration you see from the Fort Scott "tumble upon impact" ammo is evidence that energy isn't being placed on target. For the price, it's just not my thing.

In your experience have you noticed accuracy differences at distance when comparing supersonic vs subsonic projectiles? Do you get more reliable accuracy from a subsonic bullet at distance that stays subsonic when compared to a supersonic bullet that falls to subsonic at distance? Like a more predictable flight path?

I haven't noticed, as traditionally most of my 100+ yard shots are from supers. We will have to evaluate that with 8.6 as we test more loads.

Copper FMJ 😂. Good for defeating armor, good for anything else … you be the judge
@jordanhorst610 ай бұрын
8.6 wasn't invented for defense or defeating body armor. it was invented for big game hunting with subs that carry enough energy at greater distances, and high spin rates translate to more energy imparted on target. While still staying quiet when suppressed. not everything is designed for defensive purposes. However, it probably will fill a niche similar to 300blk.
@jordanhorst610 ай бұрын
also, it's not FMJ. It's solid copper.

@nikos622010 ай бұрын
@@jordanhorst6 that’s like saying 300 BLK was invented for silent coyote hunting 😂. Yes Kevin likes to hunt in Africa and hunting in general is just the only way to actually study terminal ballistics for such a project. Just watch a few more podcasts, take a look at the semi-auto options and then decide if special forces aren’t interested in a better mousetrap given the success story of the 300 BLK. And just for the record, I think it’s a cool cartridge if paired with the proper bullet, this TUI ain’t it imo

It's a great video and I hope there are more rounds so you can continue testing it. Hopefully they make a Soft/Hollowpoint round because I'm not really seeing any real use case for this round. Who needs a subsonic heavy projectile that can go through 36"s of Gel but only starts tumbling after 20 inches? Also, you need a AR-10 Lower to use it, 300BLK was successful because all you needed was a Barrel (or separate upper) on a AR-15, you basically need a different gun to run this and not all AR-10's are uniform like AR-15's are. It seems to me like the guys at Q thought they could repeat the success of the HoneyBadger by shoving a 338 Bullet into a 308 Cartridge, made it subsonic, and called it a day. Also, this whole "magic twist-rate" thing is complete BS and you know it... Q did not just re-invent twist rates, it's marketing, if any of this woo-woo twist-rate crap was real then EVERY gunmaker would be copying it or have found out about it by now. Sorry for the rant, but unless there is ammo that actually works for this that shows USEFUL ballistics then this just seems like more of a marketing gimmick then anything real.
