Nice. I've come very close to buying one of these in the last 5 years. It's the British Empire's version of the technological peak of the bolt action as a general issue weapon historically and therefore significant.

great test; i was looking for a 300 blk test with 124 grain to compare to 7.62x39 124 grain. i built a 7.62x39 AR with a BRC chrome bolt; works great; i get about 2475 fps with 124 grain; take care.

Can somebody explain to me how a tungsten AP round from 1936 out of shorter barrel and not so hot load can penetrate this plate while modern AP tungsten rounds with much higher velocity fail???
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 12 сағат бұрын
1. This SMHK load is VERY Hot. You won't find other 196gr loads in 8mm moving this fast. 2. Tungsten construction. Most modern AP loads are a form of Tungsten Carbide which tend to excel at steel/metallic barrier penetration. SMKH uses Tungsten Heavy Alloy (85% Tungsten 6% Nickel, 4% copper) that a few subject matter experts believe is less likely to fragment and shatter on impact. The core is quite long as well, so if the strike face can't degrade it, there's a good chance it's going through.. Here is the same SMKH smoking an Alumina plate at 100 yds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXnXdZdtmr16otE

Testing against 6.5 creedmoor when?
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 12 сағат бұрын
6.5 Creedmoor is primarily a hunting/target round. There is not a wide fielding of Military style loads. This plate is stopping 30 caliber threats at 300 WinMag velocities. Effectively to these materials the available 6.5 CM rounds are like .308 ball.
@TheGunNerd
@TheGunNerd 11 сағат бұрын
@BuffRANGE yes but many militaries (us included) dmrs and snipers are beginning to use creedmoor, and with the popularity of it civilian side it may be worth at the very least looking at. Plus, with higher velocity and less surface area it may pen what 30 cal doesn't

I really don't get the penetration goals. Measure from the front of your body 9" in and if you have any organs in that path, does anyone survive it? Especially with a round that is spinning as it goes through. This rounds acts different in actual meat vs. gel from what I've seen as well. Also seeing similar things that make me question the FBI's goals when it comes ot frangible ammo. Both the 5.7's action when it goes into tissue and a lot of frangible ammo seem far more devastating than what gel represents.
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 2 күн бұрын
The 12" min is to ensure reaching vitals no matter the angle. There's some new supporting documentation that has some data on calculating a tumbling rounds wound volume, and that may change my perspective on SS198LF. However a lot of dept and agencies seemed disappointed in the performance of 5.7 using FN"s duty ammo, and even SS190 is penetration limited to 10". Perhaps that lack of 12"+ is why it was poorly received, or FN just over sold it's capabilities and compared it too much to 5.56.
@Mark-yx8nn
@Mark-yx8nn 3 күн бұрын
So that block of clay was a smooth surface before the shot? Even with the body armor you're still down if that's the case. Maybe worse than if you had penetration from the looks of it.
