I've been studying Suvs for this very reason as I'll be retiring and don't want a car eating up my savings. Every car on this list with the exception of the Honda, which the HR-V would be replaced by the CR-V, I've already decided against. There's actually only two cars and maybe a third worth buying for retirement without likely issues. Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and maybe Mazda CX5/50 are the most trustworthy. To be honest at this point I'm not a fan of the Honda or a Mazda for my own personal preferences. Your #1 pick is also one of the least reliable and expensive to repair vehicles under 40k. I would never suggest this car to a senior out of respect for them and myself. The RAV4 is the best choice for all reasons and if you want a second choice the Honda CRV is reliable and a bit nicer interior all be it more expensive. Personally I'm not a fan of CVTs even though Honda makes one of the most reliable. It still isn't quite as good as an automatic transmission. Honda also doesn't care if your stranded for hours waiting on a wrecker because it saves them a few dollars replacing a spare tire with a can of fix a flat which only works with small leaks. This is the type of knowledge I would share with seniors. Yes, a little harsh but something I'm passionate about.

Indeed. The Ford Escape does have a history of transmission issues. Sounds like your mechanic knows their stuff!
