Rafael Gutierrez what difference does guitar type make? Out of tune is annoying on anything, but that worked out ok for Jack White. He didn't even use a real drummer, either :) "Loud" doesn't necessarily make you great, or even adequate. I know all about loud on Ludwigs (have ' em, my playing was mistaken for a friend= the hardest hitter I've ever seen), that don't make me Buddy Rich, lol.

He's talking about the tremolo type. Floyd Rose type tremolos are a pain in the tail to tune because as a fulling floating tremolo every time you tighten one string it affects the other strings. So you usually have to tune them about 5 times to get them actually in tune.

As a current Guitar Center employee who loves his job, this stuff happens every day. I’ve found a way to cope with it. I actually walk up to the customer, smile, and tell them that they sound great! Nothing like hearing that from a GC employee, especially in younger kids. Even if not a GC employee, you’re still feeding positivity into someone who plays music. Who know, maybe it inspires them to go home and keep practicing that one riff they’re not grasping so quickly. Ya never know. Certainly a lot better than looking down on them for not being as good as someone else.

I get that a lot... not with Guitars anymore, but with Synths. When Korg released their ARP Odyssey reissue, my local Guitar Center didn't know how to get a sound out of it, so as I dialed up a nice sound on it (because the original Odyssey was the first synth I ever played back in 1977-78) I started having their customers coming up to me asking about the synth; how it worked, do I recommend it, etc. Not the first time that's happened.

It's easy. When you pick the string, leave off with the edge of your thumb. In other words, choke down a bit on the pick, so there is less surface area showing, attack the string in such a way that the skin on your thumb just touches the string as the pick breaks contact. Took me a while to get it, but it was satisfying in the end. It just sounds cool. :)

Shouldn't hurt. You don't need a lot of skin to come in contact with the string. Start with a soft attack and as you progress you will find it easier and will develop thicker skin. Yeah, that's it.

Was in the army in the 80's & went to a music store outside of base. They had a sign that said 'Please do not play Stairway to Heaven '. While looking at guitar s, a dude came & started to playing it anyway so employees asked him nicely to stop. He didn't stop, they asked him to leave, he didn't want to so he banged the guitar on the floor until it broke in half. It was an expensive flying v guitar but don't remember more than that. I never went back to that store.

Yes several times, and we kept the PRS and Gibson up top...of course, the high end Korean type stuff on second layer, all the way down to Mexican Fenders and low end lbanez on the bottom, but they were staggered....one day a geeked out guy put a fairly high end ibanez up and it was on the 4th row up, it was at the extreme angle of the hanger...and he takes three steps...and boing boing boing it chipped and marred like four or five other guitars then hit tile floor and snapped the thin neck. Then the guy was so geeked he tried to escape and locked himself out of his car till his dad came and settled up...the guy was around thirty too...so his 65 year old dad was pissed...and this was one of many guitar plinko incidents

I wouldn't even take note of anything on this list except the detuning because I'm the tech. so please keep in mind that if you mess with a guitar because someone who works in guitars was being rude, they are usually just going to hand it over to the tech to fix anyway so you're really just wasting a different person's time.

Since he started in E, that's the One (I), and then changed to A, that's the Four (IV), so the Five (V) would be B, not D. D would be the 5 if he had started with the 1 in G (and the four in that case would have been C). I suspect this doesn't clear things up quite enough, so if you're a beginning guitarist, search for videos on "beginning blues guitar" or "basic blues progression", as someone has surely made a video where they explain it better and you can follow along. Also learn about the pentatonic scale, then you can improvise a solo within a blues progression while someone else plays bass or rhythm guitar. Super-shredding Master Guitarists sometimes act like this is basic to the point of being beneath them when they want to appear superior, but don't be discouraged by that because it's actually incredibly fun. It's hard for me to play MOP with alternate picking. I don't really find it hard to play properly (by which I mean with downstrokes). Now, pinch harmonics are like riding a bike - once you've learned to do them, it's easy as hell. BTW, do you do them with your fret or picking hand?

Just learn to turn your thumb counterclockwise (as if you're locking a door with a key) gently touching the string with it right after the pick hits the string. It's sort of like an extended downstroke. It's also important to do this at the spots where the string vibrates the most (area above the neck pickup for plain and just a bit to the left from the bridge pickup for wound strings). Gets really easy to do after a while.

Had one come up and turn my amp down once because from the drum room he "couldn't even hear himself think". So I cranked it back up and turned on the phaser on the little test pedalboard they had connected and played the chugging bit of Raining Blood over and over for about 10 minutes. He didn't even come back in the room until I got up to leave.

Years ago, while on the road, Me and my band walked in to a music store. I walked in, a few minutes later my bass player and drummer walked in and a few minutes later my singer and keyboard player walked in. It was a new town for us so we werent known at the store. We were all shopping in our own sections ( it was a small store). I started playing the usual guitar store song "smoke on the water" and you could hear the sighs ("oh great here we go") then my bass payer joined, then drummer and keys joined and singer came in on que. We had a good laugh and won some fans.

The best GC troll is walking passed someone playing and pulling the cord out of the amp. It's like the scene in Fight Club where you try to start a fight with a total stranger. Standing or sitting uncomfortably close to someone playing is even more hilarious. Another one is going in to the acoustics room and playing really loud or grabbing a banjo and plucking random notes way to hard. Most people in GC aren't there to buy anything, so it's just about ruining their fuck off time. People get so pissed off, but they never say anything to you. I did have a guy stop at the front and complain about me, but even the employee's won't say or do anything.

There's really no need to play a lot of the riffs by Metallica with pure downpicking tbh. Like yea I get the whole "artist intention" thing and it can be difficult to play some riffs alternate picking, but James dosent down pick hard enough to make it so you have to down pick every time. I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot just so I can play a certain riff "correct"

Downpicking creates a different sound, you can never cover Metallica with alternate picking, it will sound like crap. Gaining that downpicking speed will help you write down your own fast thrash music with this unique sound. It's not only for covering Metallica songs. Gain that speed and then use it wisely as 16th notes on various fast tempos is one example
